Quick's blog has some really good stuff from the locker room last night:

At one point, I noticed Aldridge start to laugh. In the locker room, I asked him what Jensen said that was so funny.

"He told me to count from 100, backward by 8s,'' Aldridge said. "I told him I can't do that (bleep) anyway.''

McMillan studied the scene, with Batum covered in ice bags - one on his shoulder, one on his foot.

"Look at you,'' the coach said. "You're lookin' like a player, like a warrior. Ice bags, bandages ... that's how a player is supposed to look.''

Batum smiled sheepishly, then nodded deferentially as McMillan cupped his bad foot and said in a soft, father-like way "You gonna be all right?''

At any rate, as I was interviewing Travis Outlaw, I had to do a double-take. Batum walked out of the locker room on his own. No crutches and only a slight limp. Hmm. Maybe he could play against Cleveland.

And other interesting bits on Outlaw, Sergio & Bayless

The best part IMO was Roy "breaking the ice" at Oden's interview thing.

I'm not gonna be too optimistic about Batum. You never know how bad an ankle injury is until the next day and the day after that.

Quick is sure stepping his game up with these behind the locker room pieces. They're great stuff.

I was thinking the same thing. That was the best reporting he's done in a long time.

I agree too. Being a fan for almost 40 years I could care less about hearing the same old comments about the game. I can see the game. The players answers are all similar after a while. What I can't see is what happens in practice and in the locker room. So to me these insights are a nice change of pace. Just report what is going on.

Personally I would prefer not hearing the "EXPERT" opinion from the media guys at all. Because although they are just an opinion, you have too many idiot fans (and other media outlets) that take it for gospel. Then all of sudden it is "fact" . So for me these observations are much more entertaining.

The best part IMO was Roy "breaking the ice" at Oden's interview thing.

The excerpt:
The Ice Breaker

Before the game, the big news was that Greg Oden was making his return to the court after missing the past 15 games with a left knee fracture. But not only was he returning, he was doing it in his hometown of Indianapolis. So naturally, there was a lot of media interest, enough so that a special time and place was designated for a pregame Greg Oden availability.

About four television stations, a couple of radio stations and four or five print reporters all gathered in a hallway to wait for Oden. These are things that Oden hates. He hates that he is an event, that he draws so much attention even when he hasn't done anything. So when he emerged from a door and walked into the hallway, Oden had a definite look of uneasiness as he tried to figure where the cameras wanted him.

As Oden knifed through the crowd and settled in against a wall, the bright lights of the cameras turned on. Oden uneasily awaited the first question. Behind the crowd, from the door where Oden entered the hallway, came a mocking, high-pitched voice.

"Greg Oden ... are you going to play tonight?''

Oden looked past the media toward the door and his face lit up. He started giggling.

Trying to hide behind the door, but with one eye peeking around to observe the proceedings, was a curious Blazers teammate.

After containing his giggling, Oden started answering the questions from the media, stealing a couple of glances past the crowd toward the door where the teammate observed. The ice had been broken, and Oden breezed through his dreaded media session.

The teammate who helped break the ice?

Brandon Roy.

It's not just a great little insight given by Quick, but it's a great illustration of just how essential Roy is to this team's success; not just his play on the court, but also in the way he seems to manage his teammates. I'm not saying getting Greg relaxed for a media session is somehow special, but it makes you wonder if little things like that didn't contribute to Greg playing loose and free later on?

Good stuff.

Great writing by Quick.

Why can't he write like this all the time?

The Roy/Oden piece was definately a good one. As mentioned above, it is a great example of what Roy means to the team. The Sarge/Batum piece was good too. It's nice to see coverage of Nate showing some softness, as I sometimes also get the impression that he is a complete hardass.

^ lost in translation, But thanks for the signature quote quick >>>>>

I actually thought a piece Quick did a week or so ago where he interviewed Greg and it came up that him and Brandon Roy needed to talk may have actually been an eye opener. I don't think that Roy and Oden knew they needed to talk, but when Greg talked with him, and some issues came up about who's team it was, it became obvious that Greg and Roy needed to start talking. Roy in the same article, came to realize the same thing when Quick brought up some of the points of his interview with Greg. It seems to me, that maybe for the first time in his career, that Jason Quick is actually getting to know the players on a better basis, and part of that is because he is not backstabbing them anymore. He ask them questions straight up, to their face, and they respect him more because of it.

LaMarcus should take a week off, concussion is nothing to fool with.
