All through the 1970s he got roles that were macho yet humorous. He could swagger but didn't take himself as seriously as, say, John Wayne. Then, in came the Reagan 80s, everything got humorless again, and Borgnine was on the way out.
 
I was going to post this but waited for you to, Maris. Although the movie moved slow, I really liked Marty.
 
First Griffith then Borgnine. My Mom used to always say these things come in threes -- wonder who's next?
