WIMBLEDON, England -- Defending champion Rafael Nadal withdrew from Wimbledon on Friday because of tendinitis in his knees.

He is the first reigning Wimbledon men's champion to not defend the title since Goran Ivanisevic in 2002 -- and only the second in the last 35 years.

The grass-court Grand Slam tournament begins Monday.

"I'm just not 100 percent," the No. 1-ranked Nadal said in a news conference at the All England Club. "I'm better than I was a couple of weeks ago but I just don't feel ready."

His announcement came about 2½ hours after he lost to Stanislas Wawrinka in an exhibition match on grass at the Hurlingham Club in south London. Nadal also lost an exhibition there to 2002 Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt on Thursday.

Nadal has complained about his knees since his fourth-round loss at the French Open on May 31 ended his streak of four consecutive championships at Roland Garros. Later that week, he pulled out of the Wimbledon tuneup tournament at Queen's Club, then went to Barcelona to have tests on his knees.

"I think I reached the limit right now. I need to reset to come back stronger," Nadal said.

Asked what sort of threat the knee problems might present to his career moving forward, he said: "It's not chronic. I can recover for sure."

Vid of press conference in the link.

Definitely needs some time off, he's young as hell and has won a major this year already at least.

He has to be very careful about the injuries, it can be the career disaster. In my point of view he should play only big tournaments and skip small ones.

This can help him to maintain his fitness and prolong his career.

All the Rafa fans who continue stubbornly to argue that Rafa is better than Fed are becoming tiresome. I’m a huge Rafa fan but it’s absurd to claim Rafa is even in the same league as Fed. Numbers speak for themselves. You don’t compare someone who’s won 15 majors to someone who’s won 6 and whose physical dominance has likely already peaked due to chronic injury.

And yet Federer's record against Nadal will always stand out. I believe Roger's putting together a strong case for being called the best tennis player ever (not one that I suscribe to, but a strong one nonetheless). But whenever you talk about his accomplishments, his inability to replicate that same dominance against Rafa is significant.

I also agree about this being a sign of a significant issue for Rafa. If it isn't now, it will be eventually. Nadal is such an overpowering athlete on the tennis court and his game is predicated on that. He's neglected to work on the technique of his swing, because he can overcome it. But when he loses that power and strength, it'll become a lot tougher for him. I wonder about the longetivity of his career.
