I think I screwed up on the overlay brush part, or maybe the gradient.
For the gradient, I set the opacity to 50, and just drew it across. For the overlay brush, I have no clue of what I did. What opacity was I supposed to set it at?
 
oh oh, don't use a gradient. use a "gradient map" in adjustment layers and set it to "multiply" (instead of normal, color dodge, screen, overlay, etc)

as for adding color, if you don't want to do a color balance, try adding a simple gradient like you did, but set that layer to screen, or overlay.

hot! The fone looks great blended and blurred in the background. One addition I did was erasing some of my layers around the chest area, and adding some lighting to make it pop out more, other wise it looks like a giant dark form, but that's me.
