<div class="quote_poster">The Super Villain Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">I wouldn't say it's kids buying 50 records, I'd bet anything it's mostly females...his biggest success selling records hasn't came from portraying an image of a gangster and getting shot nine times, what sells him records is songs like In Da Club, Disco Inferno, Candy Shop, Just A Lil Bit, which are HUGE club hits...its like pop music.</div>
It actually has been, thats what was thrown out to the world back when he first cracked the mainstream, and thats what he built his empire around, the fact he was shot 9 times. His songs are club bangers, you're right, but think of it like this, if Al Gore released those songs for example, do you think they would be anywhere near as popular? No they wouldnt. People buy his music because its 50 Cent, the former drug dealer turned rapper who was shot 9 times, thats the image he potrays, thats the story we were fed. The same goes for The Game. You wanna talk about rappers who made it big on club hits, then look at the likes of Paul Wall, Lil Jon, Ying Yang Twins, Bubba Sparxxx etc.
<div class="quote_poster">The Super Villain Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">and did you just say Nas and Jay-Z aren't hip hop? How so?</div>
Yes I did.
Jay-Z has <u>always</u> been about the dollar, and Nas jumped onto the mainstream bandwagon with 'Stillmatic'. Both are great lyricists, dont get me wrong, but they dont represent what true Hip-Hop is all about, which brings me to the next point...
<div class="quote_poster">The Super Villain Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Your trying to distinguish Rap and Hip Hop...at the end of the day it's beats and rhymes, all those artists are hip hop.</div>
Thats not true.
I dont know how much you know about the History of Hip-Hop, but let me give you a quick run down. Hip-Hop is a culture that was built on street art (graffiti), dance (in particular break dancing) and meaningful lyrics. Hip-Hop was/is for the people. Rap is a culture that was built on money, living large and whatever lyrics, Rap is for the Artist/Record Companies.
Guys like Rakim, KRS-One, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Organized Konfuzion, Public Enemy, Mos Def, Common etc. etc. rapped about the struggle, issues that were going on in the world, in a hope to bring light to the situation, or educate people about problems. Guys like Eminem, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Mobb Deep, DMX, Dr. Dre, The Game, Snoop Dogg etc. etc. rap about killing people, having sex with women and living large, simply as a means to make a quick buck. No thought or heart goes into their music, some exceptions can be made, dont get me wrong, but their basic message is "pay me". That my friend, is the difference between the 2.
