I fully expect Jason Quick to come on the radio and say he hasn't heard about any trades and that trades are stupid. He's above all things petty because he's Jason Fucking Quick.

Makes sense then. It'd be two separate deals but look like one really.

Technically, it could be one deal. The NBA looks at it like this:

Suppose Portland did a RLEC/CFEC/Outlaw/Sergio/TE deal for Wallace/Mohammed (not checking if this works, because it's not relevant to my point). The NBA would turn RLEC/CFEC/Outlaw/Sergio into one "exception" and the TE would be another exception. Each would be a slot. Those slots could not be combined. The RLEC/CFEC/Outlaw/Sergio slot could be used for one player and the TE could be used for a different player. It's all the same deal, but they must be used on separate players. The first slot would be for Wallace and Mohammed, the second slot would be for some random roster flotsam that costs around $2.5 million. Portland gets Wallace, Mohammed and Random Bad Player, Charlotte gets RLEC/CFEC/Outlaw/Sergio/TE.

It wouldn't need to be structured as two deals.

Simple solution: Stop litening to John Canzano.

The TE can, in fact, be used in a trade with Raef. The deal is basically broken up into multiple trades. For instance, Portland trades RLEC (plus other potential assets) for a player (or players) that satisfy the salary requirements of the CBA as far as trades are concerned. Then Portland follows that up, with a second trade, by sending the TE (plus other potential/possible incentives) in exchange for a player whose salary is LESS than the amount of the TE.

So, it'd be treated as two trades, in order to add some extra incentive for the other team.

I only took it as fact because he said he just spoke with KP about that, and Canzano said that RLEC couldn't be combined with the TE to get a player so he was right about that.
But yeah, now it makes sense that it can be now two trades combined into one.

The NBA would put the kabosh to the deal since Charlotte would be "circumventing the salary cap" by this sleight of hand.

Gay plus somebody. I just mentioned his name because I couldn't think of anybody else that wasn't in a rumor and we would be surprised. It could be anybody.

Gay, Darko and Buckner!

We would be so awesome then.

And by awesome I mean in the lottery.

Guys nobody has talked about much:

Mike Dunleavy, Carmelo Anthony, Rudy Gay, Josh Smith, Stephen Jackson, Corey Maggette, James Posey, Tayshaun Prince, Hedo Turkoglu, Gilbert Arenas, Jose Calderon, Baron Davis, Ray Felton, TJ Ford, Jason Terry, Earl Watson, Antawn Jamison, Marvin Williams

I'm not saying any of these guys are available, just a compiled list of guys not being talked about much that Barret could be talking about

I'm pretty disappointed by The O's trade-deadline coverage here with Quick and Freeman. Quick just seemed like an a-hole about trades during his Quick chat, and they haven't given any insight on anything going on as every other newspaper has had blogs on what's going on. Oh well..

I'm pretty sure we're trading for Sabonis. The 15 million is to pay for his wife's vodka while he is here! YEGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You've got my mind spinning in circles Minstrel, but I get your point. I'll just take it that you're one of the smarter guys on this board. :ghoti:

Canzano is being fed a line of BS from the Blazers. He just said the Blazers saw a big deal going down with the Bulls/Kings and swooped in with Ike to grab a piece of it. For this to be true, someone in one of those organizations would have had to clue in the team to this deal. What a crock.

Why is that a crock?

If the Blazers were talking to either (or both) teams, it seems ENTIRELY reasonable for someone to say, "Hey, we're going to make this deal" and then for KP to jump in and make it better for both the Kings (by giving them a superior backup while having the difference in salary covered by Portland) and the Blazers (by saving some money due to luxury tax implications).

Sorry, tried to make it clear but short. Just learned this rule today, thanks to a detailed discussion about it by Larry Coon that Ed linked me.

I'd drink to that...but Sabas days are done. Maybe in another life

Is this being updated or was it last posted at the time the article says. If it isn't being updated then it's old news and both sides have probably moved on or are discussing different scenarios.

I thought it was updated because the latest trade was on there. If it's old, just ignore.

Quick finally chimes in from his cave..

On the surface, Wednesday's trade between the Trail Blazers and Sacramento looks innocuous: Portland's seldom-used Ike Diogu heads to the Kings for forward Michael Ruffin, who hasn't played this season because of injuries. Ruffin was traded Wednesday from Chicago to Sacramento, then flipped to Portland.

But the real story in this trade is what is quickly becoming a Blazers trademark in the Tom Penn era: the trade exception.

In this deal, the Blazers have received a $3.13 million trade exception, which means the Blazers can make a trade with a team for a player worth up to $3.13 million without having to send a player back in matching salary.

In simple terms, a team gets a trade exception when it trades a player with a higher salary than the player they get in return.

Where this gets interesting is how the Blazers play this card. They have 365 days to use the exception, and you can bet in these cash-crunched times there will be teams willing to unload a $3 million player onto the Blazers. But what the Blazers have done in the past is demand that a first-round pick be added to their deal in compensation for taking the $3 million player off the other team's hands.

A trade exception from the Zach Randolph/Channing Frye trade is how the Blazers secured James Jones from Phoenix on the night of the 2007 draft, while also getting the Suns to throw in their late-first round pick ... a guy by the name of Rudy Fernandez.

The 2007 trade exception that netted James Jones and Fernandez was largely credited to Penn, the Blazers assistant general manager, who had just been hired. Penn, who came from Memphis with a reputation as a salary cap guru, suggested late in the talks about adding Fred Jones to the Knicks trade in order to get a trade exception.

I may be wrong, but I doubt it is standard practice for other teams to be officially notified that a trade is about to go down, and then for the Blazers to instantly have an answer that garners a TE in exchange for Ike Diagu in the same trade. It seems odd to me, that's all. I also think it is foolish to take any information that the Blazers gave Canzano in a 100% literal manner.

Maybe Canzano asked KP questions in hypotheticals rather than mentioning or talking about the exact trade that happened. Maybe he just asked KP can a TE be used with RLEC, or something.

The Blazers are also taking with the Nets about Vince Carter, an Eastern Conference official said. The proposed deal now is Carter, Maurice Ager and Chris Douglas-Roberts for LaFrentz, Outlaw and Sergio Rodriguez.

This is new b\c I checked that exact same article a few times today and this proposal was not on it....

and IMO, this seems to fit with what has "apparently" been going on b\t NJ & POR....

From everything I have read, Thorn has been asking for a LOT in return for Vince Carter & change (Stro Swift and K.Dooling)....

Raef, Outlaw, Sergio, Rights to Koponen and a 2009 1st rounder...It was speculated that KP didn't want to give up a 2009 1st and countered with 2 2009 2nds and a 2010 or future 1st.....

What if this was the compromise? POR gives up the 2009 1st, but gets CDR (who I like) and Ager instead of washed up Stro Swift and Dooling?

It is a possibility...and IMO makes the prospect of giving all that up for Carter a little more palatable....

GMs are aware of what's going on, though. In Moneyball, the book recounted a story of A's GM Billy Beane hearing that the (then) Expos and Red Sox were about to do a deal. He called up the GM of the Expos, got confirmation and attempted to get involved in a three-way deal to net out a player he wanted from Boston.

So I assume that GMs do sometimes "swoop in" and attempt to get involved with trade dealings by other teams.

Another question now.. is what player on New Jersey, Milwaukee, Charlotte or whoever would satisfy the $3.13 mil exception?

Maybe Canzano asked KP questions in hypotheticals rather than mentioning or talking about the exact trade that happened. Maybe he just asked KP can a TE be used with RLEC, or something.

I just found it curious that the Blazers had such an instant offer if they truly had just found out about the deal.

and yet we are still left with a hole at backup pf

I'm not sure about Agar. Is he any good and is he a PF?

As I said previously, I just can't take any information that KP gave Canzano as literal.
