Despite the fact that the people of this city have repeatedly said they don't want it, they voted to add fluoride to our water.

Obviously they don't care about the welfare of the children of this city.

Harvard study: Fluoridated water lowers children's IQ

Professor Philippe Grandjean and research scientist Anna L. Choi of Harvard University partnered with medical researchers Guifan Sun and Ying Zhang of China Medical University to conduct the study, which was performed using internal university funds.
The researchers examined data on water fluoridation levels from a variety of medical databases and compared them to IQ scores of children who lived in the associated neighborhoods. One area of focus was data from rural parts of China which have not been publicized so far. In total, 27 separate studies were examined.
"Children in high fluoride areas had significantly lower IQ scores than those who lived in low fluoride areas," the researchers concluded. "The results suggest that fluoride may be a developmental neurotoxicant that affects brain development at exposures much below those that can cause toxicity in adults."

I want it. The majority of Portlanders want it. It will go to a public poll most likely. You'll get to voice your opinion at that time.

I like how it says "may be" the cause.

It also may not be the cause. Maybe it's something else.

If you are raised by a she-wolf in the woods, you'll need your teeth more than your brains.

What are you basing your statement on? This has been voted down by the people of portland before. Why do you think a majority wants it?

It has been voted down twice, installed by the council before and immediately repealed by the initiative process. Nearly everywhere in the nation it has been approved it was not put to the voters. Councilmen are bribed to do all sorts of things, and this is one of the most common.

...yeah, have fun drinking ultra small doses of hazardous waster products! Luckily, you can still find natural untainted spring water for FREE --> www.findaspring.com

There are more than 100 published studies illustrating fluoride's harm to the brain, plus 25 published studies directly linking fluoride exposure to reduced IQ in children! In other words, it doesn’t do much (if any) good to swallow fluoride and doing so could be doing significant harm.

Adding insult to injury, new research has further revealed that ingesting fluoride in supplement form does not reduce cavities in primary teeth – and may in fact cause harm. Go figure, it's a toxic industrial waste product, which is also contaminated with lead, arsenic, radionucleotides, aluminum and other industrial contaminants. The story gets even more convoluted, as now declassified files of the Manhattan Project and the Atomic Energy Commission show that the original motivation for promoting fluoride and water fluoridation in the United States was to protect the bomb- and aluminum industries other fluoride polluting industries from liability. In the early days some of the sodium fluoride used to fluoridate water supplies in the U.S. came from Alcoa.

A couple of years later, they switched to the even more hazardous waste product hydrofluorosilicic acid from the phosphate fertilizer industry. But none of the studies on fluoride actually used the far more toxic and contaminated hydrofluorosilicic acid that is added to the water supply. Rather, they use pharmaceutical grade fluoride, which while harmful, is not quite as bad as what's being used for water fluoridation. So, the health hazards are likely FAR worse than any study has so far discerned.

Some proponents of fluoridation believe that the large dilution of these fluoridating chemicals that takes place when they are added at the public water works ameliorates concerns about the known contaminants. However, one of those contaminants is arsenic, which is a known human carcinogen. For the EPA there is no safe level for a human carcinogen. Inevitably, the addition of contaminated hexafluorosilicic acid to the water supply by definition must increase the cancer rate in the U.S. because of the arsenic it contains.

Because it was voted down 13 years ago?

...rejected!

Portland fluoride: For the fourth time since 1956, Portland voters reject fluoridation

Fluoride supporters, it appeared, had everything going for them.

Five Portland city commissioners had voted to add fluoride to the city water supply. Health advocacy groups, and many of the city's communities of color, lined up behind the cause. And proponents outraised opponents 3-to-1.

But none of that was enough. For the fourth time since 1956, Portlanders on Tuesday night rejected a plan to fluoridate city water, 60 percent to 40 percent.

"There's a libertarian component to Oregon politics ... a kind of opposition to what the establishment might want," said Bill Lunch, a political science professor at Oregon State University. "Those who have more money, despite the kind of popular presumptions in this regard, don't always win elections."

It could also be that the majority of Portland voters didn't want it.

At least 75% of the people I know didn't vote, and they all would have voted yes.

If they didnt vote (and could have) then their opinion is invalid and worthless.

Yes sir, I was wrong. I never thought I'd say "stupid portland hippies."

Tell me how ingesting fluoride is going to be good for us? I would really like to know. I prefer my water to be without chemicals (or as little amounts of chemicals as humanly possible).

We have voted down this shit many times, and they just keep bringing it back. This time they tried to sneak it through without a public vote. It's ridiculous.

or if you don't want to read the long bit:

Hundreds of studies and at least a half dozen expert review committees have looked at potential negative health impacts of optimally-fluoridated water. All expert reviews have concluded that there is no credible evidence for any negative health impact of optimally fluoridated water.

Let me ask you this Nate, If flouride is so terrible for humans, and Portland is the only major city to not flouridate their water, why isn't Portland the SMARTEST city in the country? Why don't Portlanders live tens of years longer then the rest of the country? Where is the HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE effects of consuming flouride shown in the rest of the country? Do you also believe vaccines cause Autism?

Too lazy to mail a ballot or too stupid to figure out how to seal the envelope?

If 75% of the people you know don't vote I'd advise you to broaden your social circle and consider weeding out some of the dead weight.

Well, just from personal experience, I can tell you that people who grew up here are much smarter than the bozos who moved here :devilwink:

I remember being a kid at Bridger Elementary when they'd bring the Dixie cups with flouride into class every week, and you'd swish and spit and put the cups back on the tray. You weren't supposed to drink it...

You remember that too? Funny, I guess we should have mixed it with our water and drank it for better oral health.

ABM chased his with beer.

ADD is a much bigger problem for kids than cavities. I think they should start putting Ritalin in our drinking water.

If they could put Ritalin in video game controllers...

EDIT: I forgot to finish the sentence: ...I'd finally be able to beat Final Fantasy 13!
