This might not go over well, but I figured I'd give it a try. The person before you posted a link to a song (via myspace music, youtube, the band's website, etc.). You listen to that song, post your reactions to it, and give it a grade (A+ through F). Be descriptive so we know you listened to it, but if you didn't like it, don't hold back. Then post a song of your own.

In my opinion, this would work like a modified recommendations thread. The only difference is that you know the person has listened to your recommended song.

Anyone game? I'll get it started -

Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child (

)

I've never been interested in music like this, but surprisingly ... I liked the way the guitar was played and the tempo of it. I didn't understand/like the way the guy was singing. Nonetheless, the guitar was worked to perfection (not really because I dont listen to this kinda music but the guitar sounded tight)

Score: B-

Good idea, only thing is that I don't think people who don't respect another genre that is posted should be putting their thoughts on the music. That's just going to end up in arguments and this thread eventually being closed down.

Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child A

I thoroughly enjoy Jimi's work Though not a huge fan, anyone has to respect his guitar work because he just loved to play and unlike most musicians it was basically his entire life. "Voodoo Child" has a nice riff to it with a stellar climax that sort of drifts off before the bang arrives and gets your blood pumping once again going into relentless small solo work one after the other. A classic of course and known by just about any rock follower across the globe.

My recommendation is from Cities, which has no repetitive chorus to drain out the nice guitar work.

Cities - Writing on the Wall

Well, its not that I dont respect it, I've just never listened to that sort of music before. And you're suppose to rate the song posted above yours. I've already rated the "Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child." So you were suppose to rate the one I had posted.

Fort Minor: D+

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan. I think it sounds like crap, the NBA ruined it for me by overplaying that one song.

As for the song posted by M Two One, it wouldn't let me listen

My post wasn't directed toward you otherwise I would've posted a quote. I actually posted before I even seen that you had replied.

Oh. Well, took you a long 5 minutes to post there, buddy.

Anyways, its cool.

Gaah, someone come in here and post some rap/hip-hop songs. As much as I like the idea of this thread, I'm really not familiar with this type of music.

Pakman, if you have a problem with there being no hip hop in here, go start one in the hip hop forum. You guys do have your own forum, which is BS. Why doesn't rock have one?

Get back on topic, I posted Wet Sand. It's a personal favorite of mine, especially the outro. I feel so much emotion through the music. I would love to hear Voodoo Child's opinion on it.

(Just a disclaimer: all of these grades posted reflect people's individual and often highly specialized tastes, so no one should take offense if someone does or doesn't like a particular type of music. The world is diverse; that's what makes it so great.)

Writing on the Wall (link worked for me): B

Not so much 'computer music' as it would be good live music... great all-around indie rock tune though... this comparison might be way off, but it reminds me of Secret Machines... I'm headed out to the UNC campus later this month to visit a relative, I'll have to see if they're in town, they sound like they put on a killer live show.

Wet Sand: A-

Probably my favorite off of their new album... love breakdown about 2:30 into it with the faint whistling in the background... and yeah, the ending is amazing... one of the reasons I love Frusciante, he doesn't always play the most complicated riffs, but he plays the 'right' notes... very emotion packed outro... just an overall refreshing departure from the rest of Stadium Arcadium.

New song:

TV on the Radio - Staring at the Sun

Staring at the Sun: B-

Never heard it before, it was decent. I was expecting an eruption, that what it seemed the music was building up to. None the less, it was a decent song.

The Fray - How to Save a Life

I'm not a huge Fray fan, but I do like to listen to them when I want to mellow out and just think when I'm driving.

How to Save a Life: C-

I think that's the first Fray song I've heard. I'm not really feeling them. I do like the piano though, I just don't like the guy's voice. I can understand why you would listen to it to mellow out though, it's a calm song.

My song: Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me
Invalid Video Link

Doesn't Remind Me: B-

Musically speaking, this is a solid song, but the lyrics just don't sit well with me --- they're particularly hackneyed. I'm a really big Soundgarden/Rage/Audioslave fan in general, but I've always personally felt like "Doesn't Remind Me" was one of their weaker songs. Oh yeah, and although I've always said that Tom Morello's a bit stale and uninventive, you've gotta love his solo about 2:45 into it though, vintage Morello.

New Song:

Air - Playground Love (I know I posted this before, but thought I'd bring it up for a second opinion

)

Woooo! Air. Bigtime music specialists right there. Not my favorite by far, mostly because I feel the song drags on a bit toward the end. But the soft mellow tone is great for those that just want to sit out and relax for a good tune the night in.

Air - Playground Love B

Inspiration comes from all corners, so I believe I should keep the ball rolling with Vitalic, mainly inspired by Air and Daft Punk for his musical taste. I personally enjoy him a lot, even though I usually dislike techno and house the emotion he puts into his music is class. Much different from the rest. This song I'm recommending shows how you can take a genre and turn it inside out from the core. I also love in the video how he pokes fun at other genres of media music.

Vitalic - My Friend Dario

See it live from Japan

My Friend Dario: C+

It's a decent song that sounds like it'd be a blast to dance to, but personally, I find the vocals annoying. To each his own, but I think that it'd be a much better song without them. The part of the song where the bass kicks in really makes me want to get up and dance though. Real clever video idea too, especially the rockers, that part cracked me up.

King Crimson - One More Red Nightmare: D+

I really did not care for this song at all. The "chorus" was quite awkward and I think the vocals were awful. It didn't seem to flow well. I'll give it some credit for being unique though.

<font color=""Red"">New Song:</font>

Soundgarden- The Day I Tried to Live

Soundgarden - The Day I Tried To Live C

I never really got into Soundgarden, but I definitely enjoy them more then Audioslave and similar artists. The song has a typical beat and a verse - chorus following throughout, but the guitar work isn't a "one-two touch," which gives the song more life. Good track from a classic band.

My next recommendation is from Iceland's originals Sigur R?s. Quite possibly the most beautiful and inspiring music video i've ever seen and one hell of a build up song that just thrives on emotion through music invention. The song is sung in their native Icelandic and their own created language called "Hopelandic."

Sigur R?s - Gl?s?li

Gl?s?li means Glowing sole.

While it does slowly build up as you mentioned; it is too simple and is kind of boring after a while. It wasn't that interesting to begin with. If you gave TDITTL an average score, one has to adjust the score for this particular song accordingly.

huevon, the criteria for your grading doesn't necessarily have to be based on other people's grades. I personally think "One More Red Nightmare" would get an A+, but I guess you just don't have the acquired taste for progressive rock, but I'm not going to give your songs lower grades than the one you gave "One More Red Nightmare" just out of spite.

Check out what I wrote a few posts up -

Anyway, as for the Slipknot song: D+

I like how it's a departure from their normal numetal stuff, but there's nothing amazing about it, and it's still too angsty. Overall, it's not anything complex musically, which is usually not that important to me, but in this case, it seemed like they just wrote this song to have a tolken "accoustic ballad" and nothing more. It seems very forced and lacks creativity.

New Song:

Alice in Chains - Man in the Box

(I think this song might be up your alley, with Soundgarden, Slipknot, etc., huevon.)

Alice In Chains - Man In A Box

B Good guitar, the drums sound good, his voice sounds great and haunting as always, but I was awaiting for the song to get heavier, and it never came. Maybe it's just my taste, but the song was lacking a bit IMO.

This is exactly what I was explaining about earlier. This is why I tend not to do these types of things because some people will always have their issues.

Anyway Voodoo Child, if you want to hear some more suggestions of mine or my friends (who also have great interests) send me a PM and I'll give you my Email address.

Well this is indeed true, I was being spiteful. You can give any rating you wish, but I still find it amusing how you said TDITTL was a "good track" yet you gave it a C. That's the only part that bothers me. Just call it an average song if that's the case.

A+

Aside from Freddie Mercury, Layne Staley is rock music's greatest frontman. The passion from every single word he uttered still makes me shiver to this day after years of his death. As well, the rest of the musicians especially Jerry Cantrell (guitarist) deliver their own, and they deliver it in a very good fashion. Alice In Chains is one of my favorite bands. A genius testament in rock's progression. It's a very catchy song but with a good message, which is what made them so legendary. BTW, it's Man In The Box.

Mine: Plastic Little Feat. Ghostface Killah -- Crambodia

It's just 1:20 of the whole song. I couldn't find the whole thing, and uploading it myself might be breaking some rules. So, if you like it PM me and I'll send it to ya.

Ocean Size - A

I gotcha' man. That was one of the most kickass performances of Ocean Size I've ever seen J.A. do. They really get overlooked in the great scheme of things, but are one of the great modern rock bands of our era. I love playing this song for people who're only familiar with songs like "Jane Says." It's such a powerful rock anthem.

Navarro's an amazing guitar player, very talented - no one doubts that, but I've always felt his creativity took a big drop after he left the band to record One Hot Minute.

One second, and I'll get to Sasha's and post a new one. Let's keep this organized...

Edit:

Crambodia - C-

I'm a rap fan, so don't say I'm discriminating, but I really didn't see much in that song. The chorus sounded like it would be interesting, if you had more to let us hear, but even that sounded like it was ripped from somewhere, like a sample. The beat was so-so, but the delivery was nice, I'll give them that.

New Song:

John Frusciante - Second Walk (let me know if it's not loading right, because I've had some problems with it)

Second Walk: A

This is a really great, up-beat song. The guitar work is awesome as always. This song makes me tap along with the drums. I need to check out some more of Frusciante's solo work.

My Song: Stone Temple Pilots - Interstate Love Song

C is a "good grade" so I don't understand what you need to get bent out of shape about. This was supposed to be for fun, but you're letting opinion and judgment get the better of you without respecting someone else's.

I used to listen to that type of music you listen to when I was a kid so I do know about it and understand it, but you have no idea of avant-gard so there is no point to the discussion about a comparison as really there is none. Meaning the two styles are completely different.

Don't think I'm bashing your taste in music when I've seen bands like Slipknot myself several times before they even sold out and changed their style. I'm into all genres of music and that's simply it. If you can't take another opinion don't participate and you won't have to worry about anything.

Not really, I've always been under the impression that a C is a mediocre grade. This seemed like a logical conclusion. Now, while I should have conducted myself in a better fashion, I still feel I have made a valid point. I simply feel your rating system is dubious.

I give a B for Stone Temple Pilots. It was my first time hearing that song and it was pretty good. The guitar work is ok, nothing special.

My song: Pantera - Cowboys From Hell

Never heard Interstate Love Song? That's pretty damn surprising for someone who's as into music from the 90's as you are. Yeah, the guitar's simple, but it's brilliant. You don't have to be complex to be good. I find that the best guitar players are minimalists, like John Frusciante.

And yeah, M, I'll get around to PM'ing you some day.
laugh.gif

Nothing personal, but I'm just slow as hell with my PM's/E-Mails, to everyone.

Cowboys from Hell - C+

That riff is pretty annoying (Kid Rock did major justice to it in "Bawitaba," his only good song though), but I like the solo about 2:40 into it. Not Pantera's best imo.

I usually like Pearl Jam but here it just seems forced. It seems to me like Eddie is trying to pull off a Tom Waits but without actually being soulful about it. The actual music is good though, but the voice is too prominent so it ruins it for me.

Here's mine:
