Renouncing rights to Petteri and Freeland

Here is more speculation: They figured Freeland would never come over after signing a long term deal, and Koponen just wasn't doing anything, so they decided to save some cash for partying on Paul Allens Pimp Yacht.:ghoti:

This is speculation right? I figure we wouldn't do it until necessary, which would be July 1st.

I'll believe it when I see it. Rice has a long, colorful history of making wild predictions.

Acquiring their rights was a risk just like getting Rudy or Batum were. Two of them turned out great, two of them didn't. It's an imperfect science.

I am a bit surprised we can't at least get a future 2nd or something for them, but that just confirms there true value in which case cutting them is the correct move.

Actually, it wouldn't be necessary until the cap room would actually be needed to make a transaction, which would be July 9th at the earliest.

Good way of looking at it. However, it might not be a situation where renouncing them is just a situation of "they suck, cut them". It might be a scenario of "they're potentially good, but right now we need the cap room to make a better move". That is to say, the front office might still consider them to be valuable assets, but renouncing them would result in an even more valuable asset.

if so is 1.6m really that much?

how valuable can 1.6m be?

Over the life of say a 5 year contract, quite a bit actually. A FA can only get 8% increases, as opposed to 10.5 for youe own player.

Let's use 7.2 million as a starting point on a 5 year deal

Years
1. 7,200,000
2. 7,776,000
3. 8,398,080
4. 9,069,926
5. 9,795,520
Total 42,239,526

Now use 8.8 million as a starting point on a 5 year deal

Years
1. 8,800,000
2. 9,504,000
3. 10,264,320
4. 11,085,465
5. 11,972,302
Total 51,626,087

It's the difference of 9,386,561 over the life of a 5 year contract.

Sorry, Euro-haters:

Blazers broadcaster Mike Rice stirred things up on Courtside Live the other night when he said that the Blazers planned to renounce their rights to Joel Freeland and Petteri Koponen — two former draft picks now competing in Europe — by the end of the month.

Well, if you found the statement to be a bit confusing considering the strong, flattering statements Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard has made about both players over the years, well, there may be a reason for that: It's not going to happen, Pritchard said on Wednesday.

"We have no plans on letting those guys go," Pritchard said after the Blazers' draft workout on Wednesday.

Interesting that Pritchard is also apparently ruling out Freeland coming over next year (or anytime soon).

Sweet. Mike Rice is more and more if an idiot the more I watch him on TV.

That guy bugs the hell out of me.

Wait.
During Koponen's 11-minute stint on the court, Bologna extended its lead from 54-46 to 74-61. Nando De Colo scored five points during the 14 minutes Koponen was guarding him.

That's impressive. Petteri played 14 minutes worth of defense while only actually playing 11 minutes. Must be some sort of Finnish time-warping superpower...

Koponen played 16 minutes. By "11 minute stint," I assume they mean one of the times he was on the floor. Came off the bench, played 11 minutes (during which time his team extended its lead) and then went back to the bench. Only to play again at another time in the game.

I think Playboy is such a dedicated defender that he is attached to the opposing player's hips even during time-outs!

D'oh! <forehead slap>

Nice piece on Koponen:

One thing casual NBA fans possibly don't understand is that 20-year olds never play big minutes in Serie A. Ricky Rubio probably would, but he's probably the most talented kid in the world right now. Surefire NBA lottery pick Brandon Jennings played 17 minutes a game, Koponen 15 minutes a game. While Koponen's shooting percentages were low, Jennings wasn't exactly resembling Jeff Hornacek himself (2pt 47,9%, 3pt 20,7%, Ft 64,5%). Jennings stole the ball spectacular 2,1 times a game, but then again Jennings was dropped out of playoff roster of Lottomatica Roma because he didn't focus on team defence the way Koponen did - Jennings had a lot of steals basically because he gambled a lot, trying to intercept every single pass.

Jennings will most likely be an NBA All Star one day, but I just want to put things to perspective and let you know that Serie A is definitely more challenging league that NCAA would have been. If Koponen would've gone to the NCAA, he'd definitely have more of an impact. Instead, he wanted to play against grown men and believe all his struggles would make him stronger. Just look at another Blazers draft pick Joel Freeland - in his first season with Spanish ABC, he barely played. In his second year, he's among the league leaders in PER. In NCAA, Jennings would've been one of the brighest stars of March Madness.

There's a lot more, specifically about Koponen. His team's owner seems to think the team's main problems were Earl Boykins and the coach who made him PG instead of Koponen, so has decided to fire both!

Yep. I have much more faith in Koponen being able to play in the league than I do Freeland. That being said, I would be shocked if Koponen was ever anything other than a role player.

Those 2 pictures from Blazersedge, looks like maybe Kopo has put on a little bit of muscle?

The more I think about it, the more I am leaning towards having the team just renounce their rights.

If Batum, who is younger and less experienced, is already an NBA starter (and even Sergio has an NBA job)....what is up with these 2? Time to fish or cut bait. If they are good enough to crack the rotation - get 'em in uniform. If they aren't, quit wasting capspace on them.

Uh, if we're really looking at a big-time player at the 1 or 3 that we'd need an extra 1.6M for, why not just let Travis or Blake go, either in the S&T (my preference) or before July 1? If we get a big-time 3 (Hedo?), Travis will not beat out Batum for the backup minutes there, and will have to worry about ~10 mpg backing up LMA. If we get a stud PG (Hinrich?), then we're keeping Bayless as the backup and Blake's not getting a ton of minutes.

I fail to see a single good reason why we should not keep the rights to two young #30-slot draft picks, each progressing in Europe, that we don't have to pay a dime for until they come over, and then basically a 4yr/5M contract when we do bring them over. Each has a pretty good upside, and each is a player KP raves about.

Renouncing Travis or Blake before July 1st puts more urgency on getting something done in free agency. The benefit to Kopo and Freeland is they could be renounced after that time, and not count on the cap. It's not worth the risk to renounce Outlaw, HOPING you can sign someone. Agents will see that, and all of a sudden, they have more leverage, knowing you need the upgrade now.

its not wasting capspace...its following the spurs...leaving these two in europe to grow and mature..then to bring them in as 25 to 28 year old rookies...the spurs plan....
