REPORT: Millsap offer official now. Sent to Utah.

He's also a little bit more expendable when you consider the fact that he'll most likely opt out next year, and at age 31, look for his last long term deal. Are we really going to give Joel another 5-year deal when he's 31 for more than 25 million, especially considering the cap's going down and we have about 5 players that will deserve 8-14 million per year in the next few seasons?

I think so. Joel's game isn't predicated on athleticism.

So I am hearing now that the offer sheet was not sent. WTF I am sick of these smokescreens.

Regardless, people in here are calling him a liar and such, and I think that is off base. No one knew we were after Millsap until Quick broke it that we were.
We know that Pritchard and management check in with nearly every single possible option as part of their process. Quick extrapolating Blazer management talking to Millsap into an offer has been made and he knows specific the dollar figures isn't being flat wrong yet again???
No one had any idea that Roy and Aldridge's contract talks were hitting even the slightest snag until Quick broke it that they were. While slight, and nothing will more than likely come of it, it was true.
If we were a month or so past the time where they could be extended, you'd have a legit point that JQ's panicky speculations were justified. But of course history provides many examples franchise type players that teams obviously want to lock up who still needed a couple days to pound out the details of their agreement. How many more of this guy's cries of wolf! will get you to sprint up the hill?

As to why the Raptors have their MLE, they never went below the salary cap. This is because of the massive cap hold that Marion put on their team. Because of this they didn't need to renounce their MLE, and why they received it back by making the moves they made.

Portland, however, if they didn't renounce their MLE prior to July 1st, would be stuck with just $1.9M in cap space now.

I can't find exact proof of what my understanding is of this but I remember reading this on Blazersedge.com a month ago.

Re: Millsap offer official now. Sent to Utah.

You only have to be 1$ under the cap to make a lopside trade. If you are under the cap, you are allowed to do it, it is that simple.

Dude, you keep saying this, but it makes no sense.

If we were under the salary cap by a $1, we wouldn't be able to do anything greater than a team that's over the cap. We'd still have the cap holds of our exceptions, which would put us over the cap. We could renounce all of those exceptions, and then we'd have 1 measly dollar to play with in free agency, which wouldn't even buy premium song on iTunes.

Being under the salary cap by a $1 doesn't give you a blank check to go spending any amount you want.

Blazers don't really want Millsap

It is obvious that if Portland really wanted Millsap, the offer would be made.

The threat of the offer forced Utah to the table. That much was clearly successful. Utah does not want to have to match or watch Millsap walk away.

Now the Blazers must find a 3-way for Boozer that lands a player we want, in some combination. This is not as tricky as it sounds: make a list of the teams that might want Boozer for a year, and see what they might have to offer in exchange.

Portland and maybe Utah fill in in lesser players (Blake/Outlaw/etc) as needed to finish the deal.

Only if Portland and Utah *fail* to find a 3-way deal that works, will Portland make the offer to Millsap, take him, and then we'll probably have little choice but to put Joel on the market for a Battier or PG.

I'm lost . . . is the title true? Is there an official offer that has been sent to Utah?

KP said not yet. Immediately afterward, Quick said yes. Both could be right (hadn't arrived yet) or Quick is wrong.

I there is no offer, then this thread should be locked.

It's become a Millsap-to-Portland discussion thread, which is quite reasonable whether or not an official offer has been made. No need for lockings.

If Portland gets Millsap, it means we failed at doing a deal we really wanted.

BUT - it also means that we got Paul Millsap, and have an extra center (Joel) available to trade away for a quality starter at the SF or PG position. It is not what any of us had in mind in the beginning, but it'll do. Joel clearly has a high market value.

Offer official: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4320029

The Portland Trail Blazers have offered Utah Jazz free agent Paul Millsap a four-year contract worth between $32 million and $36 million, according to league sources.

The offer includes a hefty signing bonus that will make it difficult for Utah to match. The Jazz will be presented with the offer Saturday and have seven days to match because Millsap is a restricted free agent.

ESPN just reported that we offered Millsap 4yr / $32-36M [w/heavy signing bonus]

Jazz will match, no question.

Does the signing bonus count on the salary cap?

What if the deal is 10/9/9/8 with $3M bonus up front. If that is taxed that would be an extra $6-8M you have paid above market to keep your backup PF.

Re: It has begun...

Excellent news. :)
