Utah will match it haha

Re: It has begun...

A 4 year contract offer for a back-up PF and a 4 year contract offer for a two-time All Star.

What a great summer. :(

Re: Millsap offer official now. Sent to Utah.

KP just said (minutes ago) that they were considering it, but do not have an offer ready. Hmmmm.

Congratulations. You just graduated 3rd grade.

From Larry Coon:

Teams are allowed to offer the players they sign a bonus worth as much as 20% of the total compensation (17.5% in offer sheets to restricted free agents signed after March 1, 2006). If a player has a signing bonus, then that bonus is spread among the guaranteed seasons in the contract (not option years or years following an ETO), in proportion to the percentage of salary in each of those seasons that is guaranteed*. This can create a problem if the player is signed with an exception or to the maximum salary. For instance, if the Mid-Level exception is $5 million, then a team could sign a player to a five-year contract with 8% raises (but without a signing bonus), as follows:

$36M * 17.5% is over $6M. If you give him two player options, or two team options, then the guaranteed years is two. This would likely mean

base of 7.7/8/9/10 turns into 11/11/9/10

or

base of 10/9/8/8 turns into 13/12/8/8 (ouch).

If we end up with Millsap, I'd count it a fantastic off-season. Millsap is a major piece to add free (in terms of talent).

I'm guessing that Utah will match. I'll agree that Millsap is a nice player, though. Thank God it wasn't Brandon Bass.

I never gave Millsap much thought this summer because I thought we had zero chance.

In terms of talent/age, he's the best FA on the market this summer.

WTH is this about? You edit my original post and then make some smartass comment? Get a life.

It seems like it might be difficult for them to do so, financially. I think there's a chance they won't match and, if they do, a chance that Portland can get them to do some kind of Boozer three-way deal. They apparently can't afford Boozer and Millsap, and it looks like Portland has structured it (with the signing bonus) to be most financially punishing in year 1.

I just think it's funny that some of you get all caught up in what KP says to the media in interviews that's all.

Portland wouldn't have wasted the time, nor the flexibility, if they didn't think this could either get them Millsap or give them leverage for something else. I'm sure they made this as painful as they could for Utah.

I'm a big fan of Millsap's. Have been since the beginning of the offseason.

Everyone is saying Utah has one week.... does that mean Millsap accepted the offer? :D

If we don't end up with a Millsap/D. Harris/G. Wallace someone of that caliber, I will be disappointed.

Millsap is a nice player and might have been the best FA this summer but it isn't what we need and is stupid to make this offer. Unless this leads to something else KP is a idiot plan and simple. I think it is one thing to play fantasy basketball and rate draft picks and draft a team. It is another thing to actually being a good GM and with making trades and FA pickups to improve your team. I think now KP is way over his head as a GM. Go ahead and flame me all you want.

It means KP failed to find a third team and do the 3-way, and Utah called our bluff.

So we either get Millsap, or Utah has even more incentive to find a third team for Boozer.

What I originally posted in response to whether there was an offer, before this announcement:

KP said not yet. Immediately afterward, Quick said yes. Both could be right (hadn't arrived yet) or Quick is wrong.

and what I said after the annoucement:

Hmmm. Could get interesting.

Don't create your own post and then criticize me for your words. If you have a beef with me, then at least base it on fact.

Didn't Roy himself say we needed Ronny Turiaf?

And isn't Turiaf a poor man's Millsap?

So much hate on these forums! We definitely need a low-post banger/rebounder.

I agree and you sir are 100% correct.

At the beginning of the summer, I wrote one name down and one name only. Paul Millsap.

Adding a talented player at a cost of no talent given up is a great move, whether or not he's the most-needed player. Trades can always be done to even the roster out. There wasn't a comparably talented player at a position of need (except Sessions, but he seems much harder to pry away).

Could we leave utah with an extra dirty memphis? let them eat up a HUGE contract for millsap, and then not do anything with the trade of Boozer. Hope something awful happens to those Jazz men?

They might just lose money. Funny for us, but doesn't do a lot to help Portland on the floor. I'd rather either get Millsap or get a useful player out of a Boozer deal.

This assumes we have all the facts, which we don't. I'm starting to wonder if there may be some truth to the Joel concerns. Maybe they feel that Oden/LMA/Millsap is better than Oden/LMA/Joel? Millsaps center numbers are pretty impressive.

I can't help but wonder if either Joel or LMA is not going to be here soon. Or, maybe Millsap is the best available piece and a good trading piece down the road.

I can watch masters play chess, and I can speculate what they are doing, but they are thinking many moves ahead of where I am. It would be hard for me to criticize their moves given they know what they are doing and I don't/can't know where they are headed.

Not much I can do with that. Bu-bye.

I love that we're going after Millsap, but I think the Jazz will match.
