Why does everyone assume that Greg would have actually accepted a lower offer?

Because he feels badly and wants to do the Blazers a solid. Right?

The fact is that he and his representation would have been bargaining from a position of weakness to enter into contract negotiations with the Blazers, and he almost has to gamble on a mostly healthy and productive season to improve his market value and get paid what he thinks he's due.

Exactly. It wasn't in Oden's best interest to take less money.

it wouldn't be a "low offer". It would be around Andrew Bynum money, which would have been probably cheaper than what is paid for him next summer barring another injury.

I think you grossly overestimate Oden's value around the league and secondly I think you are failing to account for contracts in the next collective bargaining agreement, which most people assume will be far less favorable to players.

Cho's first move: Trading Jerryd Bayless for a decent chance at a top ten pick :check:
Cho's second move: Letting the market decide the value of Greg Oden and refusing to bid against yourself :check:

Solid.

I would have made an effort to re-sign him with an incentive laden contract. Now, our chances of losing him probably rise by a large margin.

Maybe you're not aware of how restricted free agency actually works?

No, I'm well aware. Thanks, anyway.

So you really think some team is going to throw crazy ass money on him, when that contract will almost certainly be un-insurable? There's more than just potential production being considered here when it comes to how much risk teams will be willing to take on him.

I really don't know why you seem to think insulting people is a way to post, but it's really tiring. I'd love to have a good discussion on this as it's an interesting debate, but your decided asshole attitude makes it impossible. And that's a shame. You love to ruin the spirit of the board.

What the fuck are you talking about?

Where was the insult? I really don't see it. At all.

How valuable do you all think Oden is?

I don't think much...

Is this a statement that is being made because the Blazers know something about Oden's health that we don't?

the same voices that told him my comment/joke of "Blame Bush" was somehow a racist joke against Polish people.

In other words, this "insult" was pulled from the deep darkest parts of his ass.

Damn Polish people.....

I don't understand why it's taking Oden so long to heal. Remember when there was talk of him returning for the playoffs?! I never imagined, that 5 months after that, he'd still not see the court.

As they said in the LAC telecast...Blake Griffin had a much more minor version of Greg's injury (he just had a crack, when Greg blew his in half), and took a year to get back (and he's still not at "basketball wind" yet). The whole "back by playoffs?" thing is probably one of the bigger reasons why everyone's telling Greg to shut up about a timetable to return.

Good point Brian.

Is it possible that the lockout will result in a hard cap that will prevent us from signing Oden?

Are you asking what you think Oden and his representation would want? If that's the case I'm sure they would take 4+ years at 10 million per, but they and the team both know that Greg is in no position to make that kind of demand. His only choice is to try and have a productive (mostly) healthy year so they can actually set a baseline of comparison with other players.

Horford: 5 years, $60million!!!!!

12 million a year for a really productive player who doesn't miss games ... that only reinforces my belief that if the Blazers had offered Greg 40 million for 4 years, he and his agent would have signed that before the contract had a chance to dry coming off the printer.

Yup. That would have been fair, I would have preferred 5 years...5 years/48 million would have been ok. I think we'll end up paying closer to Horford money next summer.

I just think the Blazers are in a lose-lose situation. They have to re-sign Oden, otherwise they passed on Durant for nothing, but if they re-sign him and he never pans out, they just wasted a bunch of money and cap space. They can't not-sign him, but if he doesn't work out, they look like idiots for overpaying him.
