Retired cop guns down man for texting at Florida movie

This is going to be messy.

No weapon involved. Lots of witnesses. This guy is a retired police captain. I don't see any way that he gets off.
What if the guy had the old dude pinned down and was whaling away? I'm not saying that's the case, but it's definitely one of many possible "justifiable homicide and/or self defense" scenarios...

LOL! Not everyone white person who shoots someone is an innocent victim.

I don't think there are many justifiable self defense scenarios when you're talking about a physical altercation. If he had him held down, then yes, that could be justifiable, but if you plan on carrying a concealed handgun, it is your duty to try to avoid confrontation before using your weapon. This guy had decades of training on how to defuse a situation as a police officer. It will be interesting to hear some of the accounts of what happened though. Not saying he's guilty yet, but any time you talk about shooting an unarmed person, the deck is going to be stacked against you. You're going to have to justify that you could not simply remove yourself from the equation.

"Witnesses advised they did not observe any punches being thrown."

So much for a physical altercation.

So he shot him because he threw popcorn in his face.

This guy is going to prison for the rest of his life.

Not so fast. The stand your ground law for Florida clearly states:

(3) A person who is not engaged in an unlawful activity and who is attacked by popcorn in any other place where he or she has a right to be has no duty to retreat from said popcorn and has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if the popcorn is buttered and he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or getting covered in popcorn to himself or herself or another or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.

Also it was a dark theater so he probably thought the person throwing the popcorn was black.

Funny, but could throwing popcorn at someone be constituted as assault? I know spitting on someone is.

The guy is pretty old.... maybe he thought the popcorn was some sort of chemical weapon? Fucking terrorists....

Judge Lynn Tepper said she found the evidence from Monday's shooting "significant" enough to warrant no bond on the second-degree murder charge. A bond hearing will be scheduled in the coming days.

Reeves faces life in prison if convicted. He only spoke once during his court appearance, to say "yes, ma'am" to the judge when she asked him if he could afford to hire his own attorney. Reeves, who appeared in court via a video link from the jail, appeared to be wearing a bullet proof vest without a shirt on underneath.

Reeves' attorney, Richard Escobar, argued that his client should be released because of his deep ties to the community.

Escobar said that he found the Sheriff's Office probable cause document to be "quite weak" and that Reeves was defending himself from Oulson.

"The alleged victim attacked him," Escobar said, adding that Oulson threw something, possibly popcorn, at Reeves. "At that point in time he has every right to defend himself."

Judge Tepper said that throwing "an unknown object does not equal taking out a gun" and shooting someone.

You heard it here first... throwing popcorn at someone gives them the right to kill you.

Fucking brilliant.

You joke, but the defendant did describe it as an unidentified object being thrown at him (which everyone else describes as closely resembling popcorn), so perhaps he's just not familiar with these trendy new snacks.

That lawyer better change his strategy because he has no chance in hell of convincing a judge and jury that his defendant was justified in shooting someone because they threw popcorn at him.

Well, with what they're passing off as "butter" and "salt" these days, maybe he thought right...

He's toast.

I wonder what would have happened if the guy had ice tea and skittles.

Jackass douchbag texts in theater, knowing his act is rude and also a violation of the contract he agreed to by buying a ticket. It understandably annoys the man seated behind him who brought his wife to enjoy the movie with him. When you're 72, each moment is prescious.

He asks the rude guy to hang up or go to the lobby to text. Here is the point where any decent human being would apologize and hang up. This dick says fuck off to the seniors and continues being an ass. His wife is apparently no better than he.

So the senior takes the proper next step and reports the violator to theater personnel. Their liability now begins. Most theaters would immediately confront the texter and shut him down or boot him out. This theater refused to do anything, and so it escalated. I assume someone will be fired.

The senior returns to his seat where the dickhead immediately mocks and berates him for "tattling". The dickhead stands up, a backlit shadow to the senior, and at this point anyone would bd expecting a physical attack. As the shadow looms over him, the senior's thoughts turn to his wife's safety, and something hits his face and he draws and fires.

As much as I rail about bad cops and abusive cops, Chad Oulson made his own bed. He was an asshole, insisted on continuing to be an asshole despite being given many opportunities to stop being an asshole, and died a senseless death like most assholes do.

Sad that he fucked up so many lives through his arrogance and bullying.

This reminds me of the time I shot a guy at the opera for smiling. Everyone knows you don't smile during the emotional scenes.

I had forgotten about that.
