YES PLEASE. A World Cup format with 20 teams would be fire and probably more exciting than even a regular playoff format tbh. I know Silver has wanted it, and they should probably consider it a permanent replacement as well. Would make it more fair/competitive as no one would coast to the finals like so many teams in the East have.
 
We already know what's going to happen. If the NBA develops a scenario to finish the season that includes Portland finding their way into a playoff situation, the Blazers will make the playoffs, they will win the Championship, and we won't be able to hold a parade due to Rona. It's the most Blazers way to win a ring ever. Prepare yourself.

My doubt with all this is if a top player tests positive and is quarantined, it would throw a wrench in the whole thing. If Lebron is knocked out due to a positive test, what's the point of a playoff?

So if Portland makes the 20 team playoff....that would be fun.
And if they didn't make the 20 team scenario then they would be no worse than 10th in the lottery?
It seems like a win-win.

Only 1/2 game separates 9 and 12 in the west
 
I also like the idea of a 10 team lottery going forward. You really don’t need 14. Those teams in the 11-14 range don’t deserve even an opportunity at the first pick in the draft imo. The whole point of the thing should be to help out the shittiest teams, not the shitty AND the mediocre ones. A 20 team “world cup” playoffs is the way forward imo. It’ll make everything more competitive and exciting and even the playing field between conferences. You also increase the odds that you will see the two best teams in the finals.

Same as if LeBron got hurt. Injuries happen all the time. Durant last year. Play resumes.

Would some players try to get the virus now so they don't get it later during the playoffs?

Yes I've heard you may be able to get it multiple times. But maybe the chance of a second infection would be less.

The actual science doesn't matter, players actions will be a result of their beliefs. If they believe it could benefit them, I could see some trying to get the virus way ahead of a bubble return for this benefit. Heck maybe some of them have already done this.

It could be a concern if the NBA is not allowing infected players to play but allowing recovered players to play.

Just one of many hurdles the league has to navigate in all of this. If they make a mistake the return could be a disaster.
 
Asymptomatic carriers are much less likely to spread it, so the odds are pretty low that anyone is gonna get it with all the precautions and testing that will be done. Look at all the sport leagues that are already back and how many athletes, coaches, etc have tested positive. You can count them on one hand. The system works, and the nba is playing it even safer than others by (most likely) going to a centralized location.
 
GM poll just revealed 75% want a play in tournament.
 
During a conference call including NBA commissioner Adam Silver and the league's 30 general managers, 75% of executives voted for a play-in tournament to help determine the final playoff seeds, sources told Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer.

The other 25% voted in favor of a reportedWorld Cup-style group stage that would replace the remainder of the regular season and the first round of the playoffs, O'Connor adds.

Teams that were occupying higher seeds when the season was suspended March 11 - including the Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks - are reportedly the most in favor of the play-in tournament proposal.


Fifteen general managers reportedly voted to forgo the remainder of the regular season and move directly into the playoffs when play eventually resumes. However, the league hasn't set a return date.

More than half of the executives voted in favor of reseeding playoffs teams from first to 16th before the postseason begins. They also unanimously agreed to expand the size of playoff rosters, O'Connor reports.

Silver will discuss during a conference call Friday further details pertaining to restarting the season, though no final decisions are reportedly expected to be made at that time.

The World Cup idea of round 1 sounds awesome.

Round 1 normally sucks as theres maybe one or two competitive series. However in this scenario every game would matter, 80 games in round one. Normally round 1 has maybe 2 competitive series a bunch of sweeps, and only averages 44 games. I like the idea of the top 4 teams selecting opponents in a snake draft.

I can see why the Bucks/Lakers/Raptors/Clippers don't like this as they have to play tough initial round instead of a week opponent. Honestly I'd be fine if they gave the Blazers another disadvantage such as a one game loss and Bucks one game win just to reflect regular season accomplishments.

Then move to normal 7 game series for "conference semifinals", "conference finals", "NBA finals". Could setup an 8 team tourney or reseed every round based on record.

I know only 25% of GM's voted for it, but maybe some don't fully understand it yet and also they could tweak the structure more.

It seems weird to jump straight to the playoffs but start with a crappy team playin tournament. Are the Blazers only guaranteed one game? That doesnt seen worth the hassle of a bubble. But having multiple playin series seems too long for the top teams to wait. Then it would lead to the normally boring 1st round series'. This group stage sounds so much better.

Yup, and on the flip side, I'm sure that the Blazers, Pelicans, Kings & Spurs are all in favor of a play-in tournament. Nobody will ever convince me that it's fair just handing the 8th spot to the Grizzlies simply because the season was put on hold prior to them having to play the hardest part of their schedule. Every fan and every team is going to have their own interests at heart. That's why Silver needs to just get alone with his own advisors and pick a plan that is in the overall best interests of the league. The need for safety argues for a smaller number of teams. The interests of having wider viewership and making money argue in favor of an expanded number of teams. I think that the 20 team format is probably the best compromise, but it's going to be a bit of a no win situation for Silver no matter what he chooses.
