Rich Cho Interview (HYPHEN - Asian American Unabridged)

Welcome to our community

We came from Burma in 1968 when I was three years old. The first time I went back was six years ago...

Anyone else worried about that?

I am pretty sure that Burma is far away from where the Chinese train them.

Burma is where Cho first learned to shave his head.

Sounds like an honest man. In Cho I somehow trust.

CHO said:
I feel really grateful and fortunate to be in this position and I don’t take the responsibility and opportunity lightly. I’m going to challenge and push my staff a great deal, probably more so than they’ve ever been challenged or pushed. I want to leave no stone uncovered when it comes to the NBA draft, free agency, and trades.

According to his own words in many interviews, Cho seemingly puts more thought into not doing anything than any GM in the league. I guess that's a positive.

It is if he gets the team to the next level. IMO, the next level, this coming season, is getting past the 1st Round.

Tells me there might be some controversy in the future if he ever decides to run for president... of basketball operations.

You mean he might hire Juice Newton to play the first home game of the season instead of some washed up 1970's disco band like Larry Miller does every year?

My new nickname for Cho is, " The Myanmar Master Move Maker".

He says he's 5-11, 160 pounds.

I didn’t play basketball at a high level at all, no. I think I played until 9th grade, and then concentrated on school and tennis. I was a half-way decent tennis player...

My dad was one of the best tennis players in Burma growing up...

---If you were trapped on a desert island, what three things would you bring with you?

I’d go with a razor to shave my head, a fishing rod to catch fish for sushi, and a TV to watch sports.

---Speaking of shaving, why is it that you shave your head?

I started shaving it about six years ago, and I just like it a lot better. I used to wear it pretty long, then had a flat top for a really long time. I shave about once every two days, and it just feels cleaner that way. My wife wants me to grow it out, but I think it makes me look younger, which is always good...

Asian people tend to age well and people think I’m a lot younger than I am. But I think the shaved head helps, too.

I think it makes you look 80, dude. Ug-leeee.

He's really good isn't he?

Its amazing how instant gratification is the end all be all in today's society

Brilliant. "I'll just type some utter nonsense here because I have nothing else to say"

What makes you think I'm after instant gratification?

Because I wanted the team to stick to the long term plan they were already on?

Sometimes sticking to a long term vision can be the hardest thing to do

I don't see a change in the long-term plan. Cho won't do things differently from Pritchard, except to make more trades, not manipulate idiot Oregonian reporters with happy talk, and not insult his boss around the league. Sounds like a win-win to me. Notice how no one hired Pritchard?
