Swanigan was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2017 but had not played in the NBA since 2019. He won Indiana’s coveted Mr. Basketball honor after leading Homestead to its first and only state title in 2015. He then played at Purdue University before declaring for the NBA draft.

Swanigan, who experienced homelessness as a child before being adopted, eventually got a diploma in Educational History from Purdue. He also helped organize a fundraiser for homelessness and released music in 2019.

Oh shit… I knew he was going down the wrong path but I didn’t think it would come to this. What a sad story.

Just saw that. That's terrible. Poor kid had such a shitty childhood he never had a chance.

This really hits me. I hope we can all look at these athletes as people as we argue about them as commodities. There are a lot of expectations put on these young people and there seem to be some steep consequences for a lot of them when they don't live up to what they thought they were going to be. My thoughts go out to his loved ones.

“Natural causes”? I’m sorry, but that’s highly suspicious. No one dies of over-eating or obesity at age 25. My heart goes out to Caleb Swanigan, but this is not the whole story.

unfortunately, I was thinking the same thing

Life is rarely fair. We as a people need to do more to try to make things fair.

What can "we" do to make things more fair than give a young guy, with a rough upbringing, a college scholarship and multi-million dollar payday? He had the tools at his disposal to take any path he wanted. It's not the responsibility of others to make him happy.

If you meant it in general terms, well, this specific example sort of ruins that point, as well. Making things more fair did nothing to help Caleb.

It's possible. It could be he had some heart anomaly or something.

He did have issues with drugs so maybe it was a contributing factor.

Is Covid not a thing anymore? Would they have said it was from Covid if that’s what killed him?

RIP

Remember how quickly his weight went back up after finding himself out of the NBA. Wonder if he had chosen to play in the G-League or something else.

We know his story fairly well. Sad to hear, he seemed like a solid human being. Peace to him and his family.
