Bummer if it was a blood clot. I wonder if he knew he had one?

Damn, surgeries tend to create blood clots. Would be a shame if this was indeed due to the surgery

Sorry for your loss...

And every other blazer fans loss...I'm still devastated and I keep on asking myself, did it it have to happen? What if they kept him in the hospital a few more days? Dang!

I've been a fan of the Blazers since they came into the league. I saw them win the championship. The fans have always loved the team but there were certain eras (mid 70s with Walton, Luke, Gross, Twardzik, Dr. Jack, etc., early 90s with Jerome, Terry, Clyde, Duck, and Buck) and the current group of guys that have embraced us and loved us back. There was a special bond with those teams and right now I feel like I lost a friend. It's sinking in and I'm devastated too.

We miss you posting here.

I haven't read the entire thread, but I think Blanky should change his number. It's wrong that anyone should wear #25 this year.

We all have stories about Mercy. He was amazing to a friend of mine who passed from leukemia, doing much more than visiting him in the hospital a few times. I would run into him at the Gemini from time-to-time and he never forgot my name. Just a wonderful guy.

I have no words about how sad I am that he's gone.

Exactly right, Spud. Well said.

And Denny's right, too. We miss you posting here.

Sorry...hang in there :)

Just listening to this morning's Dan Patrick Show. Barkley's on, talking about how he really wanted the Sixers to trade him to the Blazers, how that 90's Blazers team was definitely the best team during his career not to win a title (including his own '93 Suns), and how the Kersey news really hit him hard and hurt a lot.

It was. My wife is a nurse and told me exactly what he died from as soon as I read to her that he recently had surgery.
She took about 2 seconds and said....... Pulmonary embolism.

I recall the game when the Warriors played in Portland. Blazers up 4 just before halftime, Kersey had the ball. About a second to go. Kersey was not a long range shooter but with only a second left he flung the ball in the general direction of the basket and, amazingly, it went through. Crowd in Portland went nuts. Kersey was laughing. Still only a 7 point lead but I knew after that GSW had no chance.

Barkley speaks the truth and I believe him but if he did come he wasn't going to get to play with Kersey. I fine with how it turned out (liked having Kersey on our team more and don't think Charles would have got us the championship).

Heard a rumor that Steve Blake is going to change his # and not wear #25 anymore in honor of Jerome.

Well, pulmonary embolism is just the technical term for a blood clot in the lung. There's no way for us to know whether the blood clot was caused by a recent surgery. Perhaps the coroner will be able to determine the cause of the clot, but only a medical professional who has reviewed all of the information and images would be able to link the pulmonary embolism to a recent surgery. Clots can occur naturally, and there are a number of factors that increase the risk of developing blood clots.

Usually after surgery, particularly depending on age, you get blood thinners to prevent PE's, strokes. Not sure if this is standard for someone in their 50's or not.

Sedated fork, yes, that was the 3/4 court shot.

Mercy, mercy.

Well it must be common if she came up with it immediately last evening after I mentioned his knee surgery........ and nothing else.

Not saying the procedure/surgeon was to blame, just that it is fairly common occurrence after a surgery. How else would she come up with that out of the blue?

Oh damn, Kersey memories keep coming back. I forget who the Blazers were playing, I was listening on the radio. Kersey dove after a loose ball, skidded across the floor, and crashed into Paul Allen's legs, sending Allen's popcorn flying in all directions. And Schonz said "there goes his raise!

Don't be a stranger.

I thought I read a quote that was maybe from Schonz that Kersey was walking around without his crutches after surgery. Perhaps that aggrivated the clot to break.

I must have misunderstood you. I thought you said you read her the article about the blood clot traveling to his lungs.
But yes, clots after surgery are fairly common, and that's why anticoagulants are prescribed following surgery.
