An unbelievably sad story. I wonder if she wouldn't have been so messed up without the sexual abuse?
Very sad. Sounds like she had a horrible life afterward.
When it finally became public I remember the headline on the Oregonian, "Goldsmidt admits to affair"
That was child rape, what sucks is her mother worked for Neil and helped to cover it up.
I was a Goldschmidt fan, but he should have gone to prison.
Goldschmidt abuse victim dies at age 49
The woman who was sexually abused when she was 14 by Neil Goldschmidt when he was Portland mayor more than three decades ago has died in a Portland hospice.
She was 49.
The woman died Sunday after being seriously ill for at least 18 months, her mother said Monday night.
The Oregonian is not identifying the woman because the newspaper does not name victims of sex crimes.
"She was a good person who suffered a great deal in her life," said the woman’s mother, who added, "We’re glad her suffering is at an end."
The mother declined to identify the cause of death but said her daughter had been in the hospice for about five weeks.
Goldschmidt acknowledged in 2004 that he had sex with a 14-year-old girl when he was the 35-year-old mayor and a rapidly rising political star. In 1975, sexual intercourse with a girl younger than 16 constituted third-degree rape and was afelony punishable by up to five years in prison. The statute of limitations at the time barred prosecution more than three years after the commission of a crime.
Goldschmidt covered up the abuse while he became the U.S. secretary of transportation in 1979 under President Jimmy Carter and successfully ran for governor in 1986. After one term, Goldschmidt decided not to run for re-election in 1990. His marriage was breaking up, and he cited that as a major reason to leave office.
He paid a secret financial settlement to the woman in 1994 as he was establishing himself as one of the most powerful lobbyists in the state. In 2003, then-Gov. Ted Kulongoski appointed Goldschmidt president of the Oregon Board of Higher Education.
Less than a year later, the revelations of his abuse of a teenager shook the state’s political structure. Goldschmidt abruptly quit his lobbying business and resigned as president of the higher education board.
Kulongoski, who had leaned heavily on Goldschmidt’s policy advice, denied allegations he knew of the sexual abuse. The uproar derailed Kulongoski’s plans for higher education reform. He recently conceded that he struggled to get back on track politically.
Goldschmidt’s victim was living in Nevada when the abuse became public.
Friends of the woman told The Oregonian that her life had begun to veer out of control about the time Goldschmidt was molesting her.
By the mid-1980s, she had dropped out of high school and college, and was telling people around town that Goldschmidt had had sex with her when she was a kid.
“I’m a good person just trying to live my life,” she told The Oregonian in 2004. “I don’t want my life screwed up any more.”

Please merge with "RIP" thread.
I mentioned this in another thread about Neil that our families were really close growing up. We lived about 3 houses down from them. His kids were my age. Neil actually busted me kissing his daughter in there basement when I was in about 6th grade... hahaha! When this broke it hit everybody very hard, he was great to me growing up and NOBODY knew this was going on. RIP
It was devastating for a lot of people, because they had so much faith in him. I had that very discussion with my father and stepmother after the allegations came out. I supported many of his policies and thought he was terrific for Portland and the State. However, all the good he's ever done doesn't compare to what he did to that poor girl. Like I said, he should have gone to prison.
The comments of liberals defending Goldschmidt after the article are interesting as well.

Now that the Defense Department has read of this new method of killing people by having sex with them 35 years earlier, the US has a new long-term strategy for Iran...
since A caused B. B didn't cause A.
A = the sex
B = the oddities of her personality and brevity of her life

Don't forget the Franke family and the innocent guy sitting in prison who was convicted for killing the former head of the prisons.
I was a Goldschmidt fan, but he should have gone to prison.
Oh please.......

You saying that because you think Gable did it or because you don't think Goldschimdt's child rape was used against him to compromise the investigation?
I didn't think that even you could be this callous.
As long as you protect "your guy", right?
You forgot about f. Nobody ever definitively said A caused B. I merely wondered about X's impact as a potential variable for Y. Basic math does seem to be your speed, though. Leave the calculus to the rest of us.![]()
