Rodney Hood a Blazer

I'm just not a huge fan of Prince's after watching him several times this year as he is as inconsistent as our other small forwards.

Yeah when you watch other team's players a little closer, you tend to find that most players are just as inconsistent as ours. We just don't realize it because we do not watch every single game of any team....... but ours. But shooters coming into a game cold off the bench (especially young players) are almost inconsistent.

So here's how it breaks down.

Everyone of our wings needs minutes. While only 2 (3 w/Curry) of our guards and maybe 3 of our bigs deserve PT. Something needs to shake out. No way we are done.

I would like to think that is the case. But Neil seems to have made his one, token, 'meh' move for the year. This roster does need balance....but will Neil do it?

If there are no more moves the rotation looks like

Dame
CJ
Harkless
Aminu
Nurkic

Curry
Hood
Turner
Layman or Collins
Collins or Leonard

Not convinced Stotts plays Layman at the four, so either he moves into the starting lineup or gets benched.

Haven’t even got into how much minutes would be effected if we didn’t make another move. Hood and Turner both get just under 30 minutes a game. I just don’t see how all of this is feasible without another trade. Harkless and Turner are expendable now.

Does everyone see what I mean when I say, I like roster change. When a GM makes a trade (even if just with lateral results), fans are happy, excited, and hopeful. This is why I liked Bob Whitsitt. Examining these trades is half the fun of being a fan.

Whitsit would struggle in today's CBA as he was given a blank check and much fewer restrictions in the CBA back then. He also brought us the jail blazers and no championships.

Never heard that argument before. Thanks for informing me. Any other new ideas?

I think players have a ton more power now than they did back then, only the ‘superstars’ had a lot of power 20 years ago.
Now the players union is much stronger, agents, owners, GM’s have changed a lot too, its a big game of politics. Like the cousins thing last summer when the Blazers didnt get him and they said his agent squashed it. That wouldnt of happened back then.
Not saying that Bob wouldnt be active, because he would be, but I think it would look quite a bit different.

So here's how it breaks down.

Guards:
Dame, CJ, Curry, Simons, Trent

Wings:
Turner, Harkless, Aminu, Layman, Hood

Bigs:
Nurk, Zach, Leonard, Swanigan

We can debate whether Aminu is a wing or a big, but the bottom line is Terry sees him as a big so I think it is safe to take him off the wing list.
His 7'3 1/4 wing span and 9' standing reach helps despite his weight. To me he is a better post defender then he is out on the perimeter.

Hood defense ratings with Utah actually was pretty good. This is first year his defense ratings has been bad and that might be who he is playing for too. So if he can get back where he was with Utah he will really help.

Who gives a shit?

Back to my observation that trades make fans happy. So anyway, as I was saying...I'm obviously not the only one who likes roster change.

Obviously you do since you bring up Whitsitt so much. Heck I liked Whitsitt too.
At this point its kind of sad isnt it? Were excited we got a 12 ppg scorer from one of the worst teams in the NBA...
I agree though NBA roster changes give us fans something fun to talk about.

A perfect example of why I put so little stock in that stat.

Yeah, it's sad. He doesn't change much at all.

Well, do you see why now? When a GM trades, he breathes life into the dead middle of a season. It's invigorating, and I notice that I'm not the only one having fun.

Even if the player acquired isn't all that great, it still wakes us all up.

Because that's the reason for doing the trade.

Of course I get it.
What current day GM would you like to have? Danny Ainge is pretty active. I am trying to think of if there are any GM's who even are kind of comparable to Whitsitt in terms of activity.

So here's my proposal. Twice a season, there is a random trade. One player from each team is put into a hat and randomly reassigned to another team.
Could be Trent Jr. that gets traded, could be Damian. We could get LeBron back, we could get Raymond Felton.

barfo

I'm generally with you jlprk unless one doesn't like the trade much. For instance, I think this is a good one, and leaves our 1st intact. I did not like the Afflalo trade, and the reasoning that you trade away 8+ years of control over a future young player to rent-a-bench-player. Frankly, I would've probably preferred Wayne Ellington in the "one-year player without Bird Rights for the puu puu platter" deal, but that's picking nits.
Similarly, if we traded our 1st for Terrence Ross, I wouldn't like it, even though I like Ross's game.

I like this trade. It deals away two guys who sucked, and got someone who is, at the very least, a decent bench player.

I like it for the same reasons....but it is not the upgrade the Blazers need to really make a difference.

Agreed

defensive rating is a fairly useless stat for individual players. Can't make comparisons at all

about the only good they are for players is comparing individual players to their team rating

* for instance, in 16-17 Hood had a defensive rating of 107 which was 2 points worse than Utah's rating of 105

* in 17-18, Hood had a rating of 107, again, which was 3 points worse than Utah's 104 rating

* 15-16 was the same 107 for Hood when the Jazz rating was 104

so by that gauge, Hood's defense sucked. And defensive box plus/minus 'confirms' the suckage because over those 3 seasons, Hood ranked 14th, 13th, and 15th on the Jazz...that's bad

The RPM stat pages at ESPN are down right now so I can't see where Hood ranked in that stat, but I suspect it shows the same thing

just to complete this thinking, if you were going to rank Portland's SF's now by defense it would be

Harkless
Turner/Layman
Hood
