That's fine with me, as long as you don't try to control others based on that personal relationship.

Once you do that it is no longer about you personally, and it become very personal to those you're trying to control.

If you're supporting politicians who are perceived to be using religion to control people, and pointing to your religious convictions as the reason why you are supporting said politicians, then you will understandably be perceived to be using religion to control people.

This also supports the belief that the politician is using religion to control people.

IMO, the best thing for a person in this situation who doesn't want their religion to be associated would be to very publicly denounce these things as not supported by your religion and make a concise argument as to why.
 
Hitler had "a personal relationship with Christ." He was a self-proclaimed nondenominational German Christian. In his "personal relationship with Christ" he called Jesus the "Aryan Fighter" and rejected the Jewish elements in the old testament.

That's good. Although, religion - as a whole - can come in many different flavors and viewpoints.
 
A person whose top priority is forcing women to carry pregnancy against our will. Who supports banning books. Agrees schools should not say gay or teach anything that makes white people uncomfortable. Who wants to end marriage equality. Dictate internal policies to business. Wants to prohibit parents from taking their children to entertainment he disapproves of.

If that isn't using religion to force your views onto others, what is,?
