...by McMillan about offense.

http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2009/10/inside_the_blazers_roy_adlridg.html

McMillan summoned Roy to the front of the team's private jet to tell him that from here on, the preseason will focus less on experimentation and more on the proven offense of last season, when Roy and Aldridge were the dominant players.

"I don't know yet, honestly. I've thought about it, but I don't know how I feel yet,'' Roy said. "It's definitely not cool, because I feel like I'm still young and there's a lot I can do.

But I don't know how I feel. I have to let it play out a little more. Because, it's the preseason. The minutes aren't there yet, the rotations aren't set yet. So, I'm not getting too caught up in it — yet. But, you know, it's something that's lingering there. For sure.''

All that apprehension was put at ease Friday night when McMillan used what by now has become a common practice — calling Roy to sit with him on the plane to discuss the team's future.

Interesting.

thats the nice article from quick

translation....

its a fucking mess

"So I understand how (Aldridge and Roy) could be sitting there trying to figure out where they are,''

Uh, coach? It's your job to tell them. Why didn't you have this conversation with them before the first three games?

I don't know what to think about this. I thought Roy was more mature than this... it should have been obvious to him how much more important it was for the team to give Oden confidence and try out Miller than play Roy isos all night long in fucking preseason.

For whatever reason, he seems really hung up on comparing Miller with Blake. I understand that's what he's used to and comfortable with Blake, but come on. Adapt.

Agree. I'll go a step further and say that being the star player as he is. He needs to take it upon himself to be effective in other ways if his iso game is taken away from him. I have to say, from everything I have seen, he is shit if he isn't playing the ISO game.

Furthermore, I HOPE they don't come totally away from Oden. Yes, Roy and Aldridge is the teams bread and butter. But you still need to feed Oden for the purpose of making him better and furthering his development.

This isn't all about Roy and Aldridge.

Probably a good thing Miller wasn't traded to Portland before the trade deadline.

OF COURSE KP DROPPED THE BALL THOUGH AND THREW THE TEAM UNDER THE BUS

Isn't this what my thread was about a couple days ago? :)

Why would he trade for someone he could sign in the offseason?

Yeah. And it was a good topic. My point then was, Roy is the face of the franichise and I don't see them moving him if he and Andre don't work out and/or if he can't play any other way but the ISO game.

What is this referred to?

Translation:

1. Miller and Oden to the bench, so Roy and Aldridge can get more shots.
2. Absolutely no pushing the ball with the first unit.
3. Nic will be told to be a defensive stopper and to not look to score.
4. Portland will lose in the second round of the playoffs........AT BEST.

We've mostly been on opposite ends of the Nate as a coach spectrum, but I'm beginning to see your side of the equation ... not that I think Nate is a terrible coach, but I've wondered for awhile (without much complaint) if he's really the guy to take this team to the next step of their development -- that is I think he was fabulous for a rebuilding team that needed some discipline and some motivation, but the ability to be creative and blend all of this talent might just be beyond him ... :dunno: I guess we'll find out one way or another.

Brandon and LaMarcus shouldn't be adjusting to anyone, everyone else should be trying to adjust to them, with Greg becoming more and more of a facctor. They're our cornerstone players, and our go-to guys. We got a lot of nice players on this team, but the ball should be in our best players' hands.

Welcome out of the dark, my friend.

If Miller doesn't start I will be annoyed, but if Oden doesn't start I will be screamig for Nate's head even more.

This is exactly how I feel about the situation. If Miller or especially Oden doesn't start Nate should be fired IMO. I want Nate to explain to the fans why the #1 pick a once in a generation center who has played well in pre-season (a lot better then Joel) isn't starting. Thank God Nate only wanted a one year contract. Makes it a lot easier to let him go.

In Nate's defense, Oden has been anything but a once in a generation center for them.

So far.

I didn't say he is a once in a generation center. That is what some of the hype was before we drafted him. I'm saying he is playing well and Joel so far hasn't played as well and if we are ever going to be a serious title contendor you have to start Oden. How do you now he won't be a once in a generation center if when he is playing well you don't even start him.

Brandon and LaMarcus shouldn't be adjusting to anyone

Sure they should. Even Michael Jordan was forced to adjust when Phil Jackson took over as coach of the Bulls. The team should be built around maximizing the performance of the whole team, not just one or two players, no matter who those players are. Naturally, getting that best team performance will involve heavy featuring of your best player(s), but the always changing personnel of an NBA team means that the stars also need to adapt, to allow for that supporting cast to also be best used. A star player who can only be successful or comfortable with a single mode of operation is a lot less valuable.

Roy and/or Aldridge may not be comfortable with the way the offense runs right now since it's different than last year, but that's what pre-season is for. To learn how the team is going to play and get comfortable.

If in December, Roy and/or Aldridge are still not comfortable (and it seems to be impacting the team's offensive efficiency), I'll be worried.

It's amazing how quickly Miller has disrupted this team both on the court and off of the court. :ghoti:

I never realized what a baby Roy was. Jesus man, your not fucking Michael Jordan. You do not need the ball in your hands 24/7. McMoron and Roy share the same man crush for Blake, despite the fact he sucks. I think its hard for Roy to accept the fact we have another guy who can actually run an offense. Go ahead McMoron, start your man crush Blake and Pryz. This guy is amazing.

I just can't believe Roy and Aldridge are bitching and it's only preseason. I just can't wrap my mind around that. And they're bitching because Nate has been feeding Oden the ball. A blind man would recognize that Oden is a big part of our championship hopes. You would think they would WANT Greg to be more involved in the offense.

Can't have too much offense playing together. With Blake starting, Roy and Outlaw had better start. Aldridge may need to be with the 2nd team.

I think this is all gonna work out OK; the solution is constructing two units with a balance of offensive firepower on each unit, two units with players that will be effective with the other players on that unit. I think Aldridge and Roy will be most effective with Blake and Batum and Przbilla. Roy and Aldridge will get plenty of touches, but there still should be opportunities for Batum to be more involved in the offense.

The second unit can feature Oden more and Miller can be in charge.

Then there probably will be a mixed third unit for ends of games or for use when things just aren't going good. Oden would probably always be in this unit if he isn't in foul trouble. If we are behind he would be asked to provide offense; if we are comfortably ahead he would emphasize defense. Miller might go in if Roy was struggling or if the other team was smothering Roy. If we are having trouble containing a quick guard, Bayless might go in.

I think this is what McMillan envisions, and maybe he needs to explain better to all the team what he is doing.

This is what I think also, however the players probably think like many on here do, best players start. If indeed this is what is going on I hope Nate can pull his plan off. This team may very well implode. It is very possible that the players can learn how to play well together however. Certainly hope so. Sure would like to see a championship before I get much older.

Wow. Once again you guys are reading waay to much into this. One minute you all are complaining about the Oregonian's bad writers, the next minute your taking every little overheard quick conversation to heart.

Roy is a man, he is not bitching, he's simply saying what he sees so far this year. You all need to chill.
