ROY comments on our offense - is there a problem here?

GM's make mistakes. Maybe this is why kpee was fired.

So, out of curiosity, do you feel that Roy can be, or should be, the team's long-term point guard? Should the team be grooming or acquiring a true shooting guard to play alongside him, with the assumption that Roy will be directing and distributing on offense?

I'd call that sub-optimal and kind of disappointing, but something tells me you're not far off the mark.

The question becomes, "trade for whom?" At this point is there any point guard out that there that can hit the open jumper, play defense, but will be willing to defer and get out of Brandon's way on offense? I'm struggling to think of anybody that fits that bill exactly.

One guy i wish we had tried harder to draft is Ty Lawson. He doesn't shoot the three much but was over .400 last year and was .472 in his last year in college. His strength is getting up the court before the defense is set and attacking the basket; if that didn't work i'm sure he would be happy to hand the ball over to Roy. His defense is only limited by his size. However I don't think Denver would have any interest in trading him.

I don't think Roy should be the PG. I think he needs a defensive-minded PG who can hit an outside shot to become the player I think he can be, if he's healthy. In the interim, I trust the ball more in Roy's hands, with Batum trying to be a Pippen, than I trust Miller running the offense and trying to defend somebody. I may be wrong, though.

If Roy wants the ball in his hands, he needs to play point guard. That's just my opinion. If Roy moves to the point, Wesley can play two, Nic at the three, etc. Wes could probably defend the opposing point guards. We've been talking about Roy at the point for years. Pretty much since his rookie season. Why not give it a shot?

IF Nic or Wesley show they can defend a quick PG like Rose, Brooks, Westbrook, etc., then I'm all for it, Nate. If not, then we're kind of screwed at this point with Miller trying to guard the quicker PGs, IMO.

The Miller experiment might have worked if Roy's attitude were different, but it seems like we're right back where we left off last October when B-Roy was busy lobbying for Steve and talking about putting the ball back in his hands.

Boobie Gibson? Kirk Hienrich (who I always thought was a good fit with Roy) or maybe even a guy like Ben Gordon if we are going to go with Roy as the PG route.

To Minstrel: I was commenting on the possibility of Roy being the PG.
Since the beginning of summer I said we should consider trimming the backup rotation from 4 to 3.5, I think Miller proved - even before B-Roy's comments - to be the odd man out.
Not a long time ago I suggested Miller and Dante for Francisco Garcia and Carl Landry of the Kings. Since then, in several pre-season games, both Dante and Carl proved to be keepers for their respective teams. I think a trade of Miller for Garcia straight up works for both teams. It would also give us a trade exception.

Ben Gordon might be a good choice and he might be attainable right now. Detroit signed him to a large contract and then he had a pretty bad year for them. They might go for a trade of Miller plus Bayless or Miller plus Babbit and Eliot Williams. I would think the Blazers would want to analyze why his three point percentage fell so drastically last year before they make that trade though.

*nod* I don't think he proved any such thing. I think he was far and away Portland's second-best guard last season, and he and Roy played perfectly well together after Roy came back from injury and until the injury that put Roy out, effectively, for the playoffs.

Personally, I think people really overstate the idea that Roy and Miller don't fit together. They are not ideally suited to play together, but the inefficiency of their non-ideal fit is nowhere near enough to downgrade the talent by going from Miller to Bayless (as Bayless is currently, I think he'll improve in the future), Matthews or Rudy. Or Francisco Garcia for that matter.

So if we're screwed anyway, why not choose the option that has Wesley Matthews on the floor? Turn Miller/Joel/Rudy into something worth while and call it good. Or keep Rudy. See if he comes around. Maybe we could turn Miller/Joel/?? into a decent bigman.

Quick has an article on the quotes: http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/index.ssf/2010/10/i_want_the_ball_a_lot_more_all.html

Some interesting excerpts:
McMillan said no big changes are in store for the offense, that it will once again feature Roy because he is the team's best player.

But if Roy does handle the ball more, like he did in 2008-09, it will be an adjustment for Miller, an accomplished 11-year veteran who prides himself on being a distributor. Miller and Roy make up the Blazers' starting backcourt.

Miller, however, said he thinks he and Roy can co-exist however the offense is structured.

"I think us just having a year under our belt, as far as getting to know each other on the court, will make us better," Miller said.

Roy said he expects to sit out at least one of the three remaining exhibition games, but McMillan said it won't be Saturday's game against Golden State at the Rose Garden. He said he wants to see Roy and Miller work together on offense and decipher for themselves who should get the ball depending on the matchups against Golden State guards Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry.

"That's why we personalized the offense this week, so we can run those sets to post up Ellis or Curry," McMillan said. "That's something those two have to take advantage of, and say, 'Look, get down there, Dre,' or 'Get on the post, Brandon.' They have to get together and make sure we take advantage of that."

If Portland intends for Roy to have the ball in his hands more then they are going to have to make some personel changes.

Namely, they need a point guard who can hit an outside shot.
Preferably one that isn't as limited in all other facets of the game as Blake was.

Fuck Brandon Roy

Stop your bitching, its not about you anymore. You got your 85 mil, its time this team progressed. Make the players around you better, like the rest of the superstars around the league do, the ones you want to be like.

That is all.

I don't care who get's to have the title of "PG" or who handles the ball more, and I have no problem with our best player handling the ball more than anybody else. The thing I do have a problem with is the team continuing to be an iso offense, and talking about doing even more iso's, relying on Roy to go 1 on 4, over and over. Teams have figured it out, and teams don't with in the playoffs with that type of offense.

Come on, don't hold back, how do you REALLY feel? lol

Re: Fuck Brandon Roy

Trade him for CP3 or DeRon! Let Wes Run the 2.

In all seriousness I think that B-Roy is just a little threatened with all the good talent around him as of late. I'm sure some winning will smooth it all out.

54 and 50 wins the last two years didn't, and an ISO offense won't win in the playoffs.

Ok I'll throw this bone out there. Say the offense is centered around Roy. The question is, are the guys around him the best fit to win. Is Millers the PG type that you want out there with Roy if he is going to dominate the ball? Can you play another SG with ability with him instead? (Mathews/Rudy). It seems to me that the guy that plays opposite of Roy needs a few things: 1. The ability to guard PG. 2. The ability to hit the outside shot. 3. The ability to generate a few assist per game. 4. The ability to generate their own shot. 5. The ability to take make a big man pay for a switch on the perimeter.

Secondly if Roy is going to dominate the ball, we need players on the front line who will go do the dirty work. We need guys who will hit the boards. I know Joel fits that bill. I know Oden when healthy fits that bill. Neither is healthy right now, so it doesn't matter. The guy who needs to pick it up is Aldridge. Unfortunately, that will never happen, because he is in denial that there is even a problem to begin with.

We know Mo Williams is available, and he would be a perfect fit next to Roy. Billups may be available when Denver wholesales their team, but may cost too much.

Re: Fuck Brandon Roy

If you played on a Nate ran team you'd want the ball all the time in your hands too.

Just sayin

Re: Fuck Brandon Roy

Whats wrong with our best and highest paid player saying that the team is better when he has the ball?
