ROY medical retirement possibility? Can the Blazers

discuss this medical retirement posibility with him and and his agent per NBA rules. What I am getting at is could be agreed to with Roy for him to try to play another year with Portland, but if his kness start giving him big problems like last year both sides agree that a medical retirement is then the next step. That way Roy gets full pay and comes off the Blazers cap, gets one more chance, and the Blazers I think retain the amnesty clause?

There are two key questions in regard to this

1. would a discussion or tacit agreement of this be legal per the NBA?

2. Is there still a medical retirement clause in the new CBA?

I find it hard to believe that, if medically retired, no one will pick him up for the vet minimum and screw us. I mean, if decrepit and degenerate (literally) and out-of-his-league Darius Miles got a contract to screw us over for 18M and major cap hit, you don't think that someone would do so for ~50M, plus the commensurate luxury tax, for a player they can legitimately say might have something left in the tank? And if you "wink wink" with Brandon to go this route, I'd think that the Players Association would have a conniption if a team offered him a contract and he said no.

That said, I haven't heard anything about the medical retirement rules changing.

There's likely no way to guarantee it but basically we take Roy at his word that he would be happy with a med retirement and NOT WANT to play IF he had another shot next year and it (his knees) were like last year or worse? I would only try this if he thought it was a good idea, worse case would be we amnesty him next summer. Keep in mind I am someone who prefers amnesty now but would be willing to explore this if we could and Roy was amenable to it. Maybe it's not at all realistic but I though it at least worth exploring/talking about.

I think if Roy can't perform this year there would be a good chance he would want to retire. Miles did not want to.

But there is no one else on Portland's team we would use the amnesty clause on unless Wallace or LMA took a nose dive this year. No other big contracts after this year.

I wonder, there was a brief article saying roy would consider retiring if he was waived under amnesty clause. If he's serious, get him to retire before hand, and then we can still use our amnesty. Buh bye Babbitt.

I'm pretty sure Babbitt's outlandish 2.9M in 2013-14 can go away just by not offering a 4th-year option on his rookie contract.

As long as Chris Wallace and Michael Heisley are in Memphis, I'd be working on the assumption that any cap space cleared by a medically-retired Roy would be worth worthless as soon as a few 10-day contracts were signed by Roy.

Isn't Roy's contract not insured, so if he Medically retires he gets nothing correct? If that's the case I think he only retires if we amnesty him.

I believe that that's incorrect. If he medically retires, he gets all the money ('guaranteed' contract), but PA doesn't get reimbursed by the insurance company like he did with, say, Joel or Raef.

medical retirement is just saying he is no longer fit to play and retires because of it/gets paid.

Insurance aspect is only whether Allen would pay his salary upon retiring, or insurance.

If his contract is insured, insurance would pay the contract.

A bigger deal is getting the required doctors to say he can't play.

Orlando and Grant Hill could not get that clearance. From the insurance standpoint, if Roy plays again two seasons from now, it would be like fraud.

I think it's obvious by him saying he is eyeing the starting SG spot that he isn't ready to admit anything yet

IT definitely all comes down to whether Roy can accept a back-seat.

"If Brandon were to accept mentally that 'I'm not that guy anymore, but I will do whatever I can to help the team,' it would make it easier to keep him around," Miller said. "We know every-so-often he is going to give us that game, and be the Brandon Roy of old, but mentally accepting where his game is, that's the bigger challenge for him. I don't know if he is there, or if he can get there."

Lawrence said the two sides have had plenty of dialogue, during which Roy has repeatedly told the Blazers that he will accept any role the Blazers want him to play.
