Roy=superstar?

Is Roy on the verge of becoming a Superstar?

Before we drafted Roy I compared him to Wade without all the flash. I think he's on the verge of being a top ten player. He should look even better playing with a great center.

I doubt it. All-Star yes, superstar as one of the 5 best players in the league and argueably the best player at his position? Not seeing it.

besides, to be considered a superstar you have to be great over a period of time longer than a year or two.. otherwise Vince Carter is a superstar for the few great years he's had. VC is very good, not Great IMO.
I think Roy will be very good not great. Oden MAY become great, but it'll take 5-7 years before anyone can say for sure.

Further, Roy isn't a force defensively. He doesn't block shots or get a shit ton of steals. He's not known as any sort of lock-down defender.

Finally, Roy can't stay healthy. He'll need to demonstrate an ability to stay on the floor before he's considered a superstar.

I think Roy is a star talent, not a superstar talent. I see his prime being a 22/5/5 type of player with solid defense. PER between 20-22 year to year. Superstars tend to be at 25+ PER.

tell that to Joe Johnson and Melo. I think he's on the verge of becoming a very good defender. Most superstars need to dominate scoring but for whatever reason Roy is getting lots of press for doing all the small things. I agree he's not a superstar yet but if he stays healthy I think he'll be one within 2 years.

It's true that Roy could (and hopefully will) commit to a more balanced game effort on both ends in the first three quarters of a game. I mean, yeah, you only need to block one shot when it's the last shot. You only need one steal when it's the one that wins it for you. And Roy has done that more than once or twice. But the view is that he's a little soft in the first 3 quarters, saving himself up for the 4th. I'd like to see him push harder for all four quarters... that'll give him more of a "superstar" line and look.

I tend to lean toward top 15 when I think about superstars. Mostly because there are 30 teams in the league, and if you are top 15 that means you are better than at least half the teams in the league's best player.

Would that be before or after Johnson scored 37 points with no turnovers against the Blazers in January? Or after Anthony got 25+ points at least twice against us (I didn't bother to look up all the Denver/Portland games last year)?

He doesn't block shots or get a lot of steals. No opinion of Johnson or Melo is going to change that fact.

Also, at least according to the boxscores with the two players you list, there's not much to support them being locked up by Roy (or any other Blazer).

Kind of disingenuous, Ed. Roy wasn't guarding Johnson most of the game, just like he wasn't guarding 'Melo most of the game. But when he was switched onto them for the last couple of plays, he did quite well.

Another point....against the L*kers Webster held K*be to 8 points in 2 1/2 quarters. Then Nate switched Travis onto K*be. He ended up with 37, iirc.

All that to say, I hope Roy plays that kind of defense much more than 2 plays per game this season.

I don't tend to place a number on it. There are certain players who I think dominate games routinely. Those are the players I'd call superstars. Five years ago, it would have been Shaq, Duncan, Garnett, McGrady and Kobe. A couple of years later, I'd have added Dirk Nowitzki (without removing any).

Today, I'd say it's LeBron, Kobe, Paul, Amare and Wade. Garnett, Duncan, McGrady and Nowitzki have fallen just out of that category for me. Yao and Howard are also in that second tier.

So it seems to end up around top-five for me, I guess. Not by design, but my standard seems to limit it to almost exactly that.

I think Roy will be a top-15 player. But I think Oden can be a dominator and be in that group of 5-6 superstars.

This season, B-Roy's 3rd, will tell the tale. He certainly could get to that level. I think he has that kind of ability to not only get his own stats, but to make the people around him better. To me, that is what makes someone a super star as opposed to an all star. I am giddy to see if he can reach that level.

BTW, my list of superstars would be: Tim Duncan, LeBron, Kobe, KG, CP3, Wade, and Nash. T-Mac, Dirk, AI, and Melo have fantasic game. It just doesn't do much to elevate the play of their team mates. Teams that don't have such a player can still win, but probably can't go all the way. Having such a player doesn't guarentee a title, but it does pretty much guarentee the playoffs.

I think you can tell the difference by what happens to their team mates when they get a huge deal and go to another team. As far as I am concerned, Tim Thomas should give half his salary to Nash.

Except when the game was on the line Melo got it stuffed back in his mug and Johnson used 23 seconds of the 24 second clock trying to get around Roy. He may not have been great but he has the potential to be a very good defender. Something he seems to be taking pride in. Not trying to get in a pissing match just saying when it counts he has the ability to turn in a pretty good defensive effort. I expect to see more of it now that he won't have all the offensive burden he had last year.

All I can think to say is, "who cares?" Brandon is great, I love watching him, and I think this team is going to go far as long as he's healthy and leading this team, I couldn't give two shits what the public at large thinks of him.

I must have misunderstood what the topic was. If we are talking about Superstar in terms of media attention, then B-Roy is sunk. If we are talking about his play on the court, then I stand by my post earlier.
