The source said Roy met w/ doctors Thurs and, after an evaluation of his knees, was told: "You can't do this. You might end up not walking."

The source said Roy is very "emotional" and was not sure whether Roy would address media today during first day of camp. Sounds unlikely.

John Canzano @JohnCanzanoBFT
NBA GM tells me this Roy retirement is "amazing work by Brandon's agent." Roy retires in front of Amnesty and holds all the cards.

He makes it sound like the Blazers lose in this situation. Roy does get to go out on his terms, but this is what the Blazers wanted too.

You have to take your hat off to Roy, he is going out like the class act he is. Loyal to the team from day one. He needs some love from the team , a position on the bench. The players in the league like and respect him and would listen to him. Lets keep him a Blazer.

Totally agree. Fire that Dan Dickau bum and make Roy Player Development coach. :P

If this is true then Canzano hit a new low. And that is hard to do

edit: OOps I meant to quote this:

Here's something to think about.

Trey Kerby:

*snip*

That would be the ultimate, double-barreled "fuck you" to Paul Allen I could ever imagine.

There's a glaring mistake in the linked article:

"Plus, this wouldn’t be the first time the Trail Blazers have convinced a cap killer to retire when he still was able to play in the NBA, word to Darius Miles. If he’s a medical retirement, he still gets all the money from that giant contract he signed in 2010, so it’s not the worst thing in the world for him.
Of course, just like Darius Miles, Roy could retire and then decide that at 27 he’s not ready to be done playing professional basketball for the rest of his life. If he comes back and some other team signs him — even for one game — the Trail Blazers are on the hook for his salary, which would be the only thing more hilarious than paying a max salary to 2011 Brandon Roy in the first place."

As any Blazer fan can tell you, it's 10 games, not one, and preseason games count.

BNM

Pretty sad news, but at least he knows it's time to call it quits before he got hurt even worse. I have a lot of respect for him, more than any of these so called "stars" like Paul and Melo.

I honor of Roy retiring I'm going to a Chinese food restaurant and order the #7 for lunch!

As an NBA fan, I will miss him. I've been watching more and more Blazers games the past few seasons. It's hard not to like the guy and appreciate him as a player. I had hopes he could figure out how to play anyway, but it doesn't appear to be the case.

At this point, I really hope he can walk when he's 45.

I know there are a ton of pessmistic dbags on this thread but i am truely devastated by this...we will never see one of the classiest players of all time grace us with his presence on the court again. thank you brandon roy a true warrior who gave everything to this organization

Been in meeting.

Shocking news.

Not that BRoy is retiring. But, that he is retiring right now, after being told he might start.

My guess is that after working out this year in Seattle testing his knees, that Brandon thought "ok it is often painful, but I can gut this out. At least I can move." He goes for a checkup with the doc, and is told that the workouts have been causing significant damage to the bone and an NBA season will likely cripple him.

Thank you Brandon for playing a large part in turning a dying franchise around. You will always hold a special place in fan's hearts because of that.

Bummer deal -- Brandon will be very much missed. Glad that he's from Seattle because I'll expect him to be seen here and there.

It was obvious he was on borrowed time in the league. I'm glad he's doing this now, rather than later.

I'm rather happy that I won't have to suffer seeing Roy in any Urine colored uniforms anytime soon.

Now I'm wondering if Canzano's twitter has been hacked.

JohnCanzanoBFT John Canzano
So does this mean Brandon Roy won't start?

No what Kerby is saying is that if Roy wanted to screw the Blazers he could pull a Darius and come back and play for somebody else with the express purpose of putting his contract back on the Blazers' books for the life of his contract ... I think the question being raised is whether or not Roy is trying to leverage the Blazers to use the amnesty on him so he can go somewhere else and play.

Does anybody even know if that scenario is possible in an entirely new CBA?

I doubt it. Let's not worry about something that may not even be possible in the new deal.

Saddest story as a blazer fan. Thank you brandon for all the memories.

Why would you bother following Canzano?

And no, I doubt he's been hacked. He's just pissed he didn't get to break the story.

NBA GM tells me this Roy retirement is "amazing work by Brandon's agent." Roy retires in front of Amnesty and holds all the cards.

How does Roy "hold all the cards"?

Can someone explain that to me?

Canzano is all about piling on POR mgmt right now. He wants people to believe that this is all POR mgmt either manipulating events or ineptitude....

I think more likely scenario is the Roymet with Blazer mgmt told him of his desire to play and that he felt good, and then had a meeting on thrusday with doctors and given a cold harsh reality of the situation with his knees, and after that he decided to retire...

I think it is likely this caught POR mgmt completely offguard....which means that Canzano trying to claim ineptitude has some merit IMO, but conspiracy? I am not so convinced....

and yeah, having a GM might have helped.....

Furthermore, this makes Nate's comments about him as a starter concerning IMO....

What Nate, you were just going to insert him in the starting lineup defacto instead of seeing how he was? Doesn't reflect well on Nate at all....

MAGS - (the bet)

I gave you an out any time prior to the start of the season. So your bet with me can be nixed. As far as your other bets, that's something you need to figure out.

My head is spinning it all the implications of this news. Best of luck to Roy and his family, and I hope to see him often either on broadcast or coaching staff.
