God I hope not.

One potential trade scenario that appears quite intriguing is Rubio playing for the Portland Trail Blazers. While the Blazers locked in Damian Lillard to a lucrative long-term deal, team's brain trust sees him as more of high scoring off-guard than a natural playmaker. Rubio, although offensively challenged, could play well alongside Lillard, being a past-first point guard that he's and an above average perimeter defender.

According to Rick Bonnell of Charlotte Observer, these two teams had a discussion centered on a potential blockbuster deal before their talks eventually collapsed. Still, trade talks between parties could be revived, especially if the Wolves run out of playoff contention in the West.

I just don't see what we can realistically offer them, aside from Rubio being compensation for taking Pek's contract off of their hands.

ewww, that's disgusting. Rubio has zero value imo.
Toxic contract+gets injured when it matters the most+bad shooting and questionable character.

I would be willing to trade him for Fraizer IF he is willing to cut his contract by 80%.

What's a past-first point guard and why would we want one?

I think we'd be better off signing Sergio. He'd be cheaper, doesn't have the history of injuries, and seems to have developed a decent outside shot. And I think he's every bit the passer Rubio is.

He's Spanish...the word is out about Portland and Spanish players..he knows Claver, Sergio and Rudy..just kidding but his passing would not hurt the Blazers at all.

If he was a Blazers we wouldn't want to let him go but we don't have him, we don't want him.

Love Rubio, and he has the best DRPM of any PG (but the fact Curry is second kind of undermines the stat), but does his game work in the modern NBA? Arguably he's a poor man's Jason Kidd (certainly before Kidd developed a 3-point shot), but would a young Jason Kidd work today either?

HOWEVER:
1. There's nothing behind this rumor other than another rumor of collapsed trade talks with the Wolves, a rumor that was debunked at the time anyway, and didn't mention Rubio either.
2. I really don't think the Wolves are ready to give up on Rubio. Their team fits Rubio much better than ours. Zach Lavine was flashy as all hell but useless as a PG last year, and the Duke kid from Minnesota that they drafted struggled in Summer League. If they want to trade him, it will be mid season or something.

I know everybody likes to hate on the furriners, but the Wolves were MILES better with Rubio than without him last year.

"Trading Ricky Rubio now would be foolish for the Minnesota Timberwolves"

Sergio has re-signed with Real Madrid. He flirted with the NBA this off-season but apparently with little interest. The huge glaring difference between the two is defense: Rubio is good at it, Sergio is, well, not.

When does it NOT matter to get injured? Conversely, when did anything matter to the Wolves last season?

And "questionable character"? Where do you get that?

I'd happily take rubio for cheap. I just don't see it happening. Seems less like a rumor, more like guessing

Yes, we all love to hate on the "furriners," but how exactly did Rubio come away without the one asset that most European players are known for? He can't shoot a lick.

If there really was talk between the Wolves and the Blazers, I think it's a lot more likely that it was about Anthony Bennett, because (as I said in another thread), he's exactly the kind of player (high draft pick who's disappointed) that Olshey has been acquiring, he's looked good for Canada in the FIBA Americas, and Jay Triano is his coach.

"Anthony Bennett a key cog for Canada"
Bennett quickly earned the confidence of head coach Jay Triano at training camp, was perhaps the best performer at the Pan Am Games in Toronto and was solid in Puerto Rico, before faring well here as well.

“I think Anthony Bennett’s summer has been absolutely fantastic for us,” Triano said after Canada defeated Panama on Sunday.

“He’s engaged in everything that we do on the floor, off the floor, rebounding. We’ve asked him to rebound, and he’s done it on a continuous basis. He runs the floor on a continuous basis. He provides help on the defensive end. He understands our defensive system.”

Confidence is important to Bennett and with Triano letting him just go out and play, he seems relaxed and is having fun. He looked relaxed before the game, throwing down a self-alley-oop reverse dunk in the layup line, and kept going from there.

“Coach was saying, ‘just line ’em up and knock ’em down,’ ” Bennett said.

“This is definitely a fun tournament to play in. A lot of competition, different teams, different styles so you’ve just got to adjust.”

Triano is pleased for the former No. 1 overall draft pick, who has had a tough first couple of NBA seasons.

“We told him earlier this summer if you do those things people are going to understand he’s got a lot of other offensive skills,” Triano said.

“His ability to pass the basketball, his ability to get teammates open. I’m really happy for him as an individual and we need him to continue to play that way.”

That is what I was thinking. Then I looked at his salary. He just makes too much for a back up PG. ($14 mil per)
And that's what he would be with Dame on the team. I wouldn't mind a pass only PG, if he was really good defensively...and came cheap. Rubio does not really fit that description.

CJ/Davis/Frazier for Rubio/Dieng/Shabazz

2 seasons ago the wolves were kind of rolling until the all star break and then he got injured and everything collapsed. An injury after the all star break is the most devastating if you're a playoff team or in playoffs contention, we experienced that first hand with Wes this last season.

He didn't want to go to Minnesota at first because "his mom hates the cold" + he's European, that adds up to "questionable character" for me:nunchaku:

NOBODY wants to move to Minnesota because of the cold. But he did, no complaints, and has signed an extension.

+ he's European, that adds up to "questionable character" for me:nunchaku:

So you're the xenophobe but he's the one with questionable character?

I don't think Portland would give up any assets for Rubio. But we might be interested in just taking on his contract. Dude has 4 years left on a contract averaging about 13 mil per year. So if the Timberwolves want to move on, I can see why they'd want to just ditch his contract.

But of course, it would bring up the question, why Rubio and not Matthews? Matthews is a much better player, and both have injury issues.

I am 99% sure this will not happen and has not been discussed, but if you want a comparison, the Suns tried a 2 PG backcourt with Kidd and KJ.

Didn't work, as I recall.
