Same could be said of a vet

Exactly. Just because someone is a "vet" doesn't mean they are going to get us to contention. In fact, almost every vet of that caliber is untouchable or a HUGE roll of the dice. Legit the only one I can think of that might be available for cheap is board favorite (sarcasm) Ben Simmons. I don't think I would trade the #7 for him, tough I guess I would consider it. In fact, I'm not aware of any trade possible that get's us a borderline All-Star or better player outside of Simmons at a position of need (wing). I'm 100% certain a guy of that caliber is at 7 or later. Yes certain because they have them in very close to every draft in history. Also, many guys of that talent level make a big impact within 2 years of being in the league. If there is an All-Star wing we can get for the #7 then sure trade it. A role player like Jerami Grant? Gtfoh!

get vets...we have enough young bench players now.
How many of those "young bench players" legitimately have the talent to become all stars?

How many of the vets that we might pursue have that level of ability?

We might, in theory, have enough "young bench players". What we don't have is enough "talent". Or "size". Or "length". Or "defense".

Ant will now be on a huge contract so I don't consider him a young bench player.

The only young guy we have is little who is very injury prone.

All our other young guys are scrubs that might be out of the league soon. This team desperately needs young talent, even more so that they have a lack of veteran talent to contend any time soon.

That would tend to make one think the shotgun approach is best. So, it would really be dumb to trade a 15 and a 20 for a 10, yes?

the 10 could have landed Donovan Mitchell or Bam Adebayo so it would have been smart. Staying at 15 & 20 and drafting John Collins and OG Anunoby or Jarret Allen would have been smart too

too bad Blazers had a dumb GM

This dude is using Dame as an example, really?

Jan Vesely
Ekpe Udoh
Jonny Flynn
Yi
All are on Line #6 waiting to speak to you.
Oh, I forgot we have the 7th pick. I think it's safe to say that Dame doesn't expect this pick to turn out like he did. He doesn't want to wait a couple years for help.
Okay? So there's players that have a high impact right away and players who don't. So to act like either is for certain is ridiculous.

You seem to think Ant, Nas, Trendon Watford and Keon Johnson or Brandon Williams and Greg Brown or Did Louzada have no talent.......ok......are the draft targets all that much better than all those young guys we've have? I'm not so sure.......as to Ant....I sell high on Ant in a sign and trade if I'm GM and get that 2 way player to replace him....a bigger 2 guard or slide Hart there and get a Power forward. I think they'll pay Ant but there's risk that he just becomes the next CJ and we end up with no point of attack defense....other than Dame and a few other guys on the roster I think everyone is tradeable this off season.....I don't follow college ball other than Iowa at times so I never get hyped for draft prospects like most do. Joe knows more than I'll ever know...I"m going to trust his judgement until I feel he's put together a shitty team....so far I think he's done what needed to be done and we don't have a roster that will be starting at tipoff next season yet....Ant has been coming off our bench until Dame went down so yeah...I call him a bench player at this point. I know if he's here he'll start next year

Well, no, that's not at all what I said. But I will say:
  • Ant may have all-star talent, but I doubt he can realize it playing with Dame;
  • Nas may have all-star talent, but unless he can stay healthy, it's irrelevant;
  • Keon and Brown have all-star athleticism, but I don't believe they have the ability to develop all-star skill;
  • Watford is just the opposite, IMO
So no, I'm not saying that we don't have players with talent; I'm saying we don't have enough talent in our youth.

Thus, unless we are able to bring in multiple big, long, defensive-oriented vets who can shoot capably from the perimeter (I've given a blueprint for this in other threads), I feel we need to gamble on the potential of adding young talent if we want this team to contend.

Fair enough...I just think the league has changed drastically with a flood of players who can't find a job now...there will be more this summer after this draft and the playoffs have teams making changes after they lose...etc...as a bench 3rd string big I want an Ed Davis and I like Drew Eubanks as a backup....at 7 can you get that kind of security to make a run with Dame now? Joe seemed to me to be leaning towards building the best Chauncey ball team he can and if that means you use Josh Hart instead of CJ McCollum at a fraction of the cost...I'm all in.

No new workouts? Three guys who will be second rounders and Mathurin?

Everything I read and see seems to say that the pick is getting traded. I'd be really surprised if they draft there...they might trade down but I don't see them finding what they're looking for at 7

What's up with Ousmane Dieng? We had heard Portland was interested weeks ago and recently I heard someone say they thought he was a top 8 or 9 after seeing him at the Combine.

Dude this draft is fucking crazy. For sure Dieng could go 8 or 9 but he's in a huge tier of players. I think from what I've read and heard that Jabari, Chet, Paolo, Ivey, Sharpe, Daniels and Murray are kind of seen as the top six right now not necessarily in that order but after that Griffin, Mathurin, Davis, Branham, Duren, Sachron and yeah Dieng are in some kind of group together... some people have Mark Williams in there with those guys, some people are super high on Agbaji or Eason. Not one of those guys is a pure PG like TyTy. Jovic is an absolute freak with the skills he has at his size.

So 7-13 is a pretty big jumble and that could be extended by 5 more spots.

A top 6 with 7 players… interesting ;)

Yep--it had been a "top 6", but then Daniels has jumped up the boards

Build value in the pick?

Honestly, Daniels' rapid ascent has probably built more value into the pick than anything the Blazers could have done.

Can Cronin take advantage of that fact? Stay tuned, I guess...

Give me the chance at a star instead of a guaranteed role player. One is a lot harder to find elsewhere.
It's also hard/impossible for the team to develop someone who is 28 years old. If they can't shoot now they probably won't be able to shoot in the future if they are 28.

I'd be down to draft Daniels. He sounds like a terrific prospect.

Daniels, Sochan, Eason would all be acceptable. I'd like to see the Blazers end up with one of them.

The team is being sold and the pick is being traded.
The Blazers will be fun to watch at times next year but are still 2-3 years away from thinking about a deep run in the playoffs.
Chauncey Billups will get a chance to coach the team with actual starting caliber players.

There. That about sums up the situation. (And about 6 or 8 threads)
