“Ryan Callahan wants north of $6.5 million and close to $7 million per year on a seven-year deal. If he gets that in UFA buyer beware. He would be a great fit on 30 teams, he is a heart and soul player but not at almost $7 million. Sather is drumming up interest and wants to see the market entirely.” (Darren Dreger on TSN Drive)

Dreger adds that the Rangers wanted this resolved this week but that may not happen until March 5.

This is now the third report of Callahan wanting more than the originally speculated on $6 million per year for seven-years.

Kevin Weekes of Hockey Night in Canada was on Sportnet’s Tim and Sid today to talk about the NHL and trade rumors.

On Ryan Callahan, Weekes said, “I’m told from speaking to people with New York that he is seeking a seven-year deal between $6 million and $7 million, closer to the $7 million, which I think, I am a big Ryan Callahan fan, is a little bit expensive. The Rangers think that at this point and it’s interesting to see where that goes, especially since he is a New York State native, from Rochester, captain of the Rangers and will be playing for Team USA.”

It was reported yesterday that Callahan may be seeking a deal worth $6.85 million per season.

He added, “the interesting part in that is Chris Stewart playing for the Blues, He is not having as good of a season this year. In talking to people with the Blues and his agent, Ken Hitchcock isn’t enamored with his game and it’s not that much of a fit with the style of play that Hitch wants him to play. He has scored 28 twice, 30-31 on a prorated basis last year. A power forward that can skate make plays off the rush, he can score so now you add him as another winger to the mix. He isn’t a UFA but when I look at a team like Ottawa….they are looking to add a scoring winger.”

Trade him. This is a joke. I FULLY respect a player asking for whatever they want, that is 10000000000% their right, but if he/his agents simply refuse to be real he needs to go. This guy shouldn't have a 6 mill per cap hit, let alone over a 6.5 mill per cap hit.

He should be in the low to mid 5's TOPS and that is only because he is the captain and he is a leader. On play alone he's in the 4's IMO.

If he wants more than a 6 mill per cap hit, I don't care if it is for 5, 6, or 7 years, we need to deal him now and move on. We can get a solid player like a Stewart and a pick. That would work for me.

Stewart would do well here. He scored 28 goals twice. Was on a 30 goal pace last season over 82 games. Is on a 23 goal pace this season over 82 games. Is a righty shot. Just turned 26. Has size. And is signed next season at a reasonable 4.15 cap hit.

DO IT...

I'm with you Chuck, $6 mil is a 40% raise, Ryan should have signed the extension before it hit the desk. If another team wants to give him more I wouldn't blame him for leaving. Best for Glen to get a deal done before it becomes a distraction, sounds like Stewart might need a change of scenery. I think trading for Stewart is a safer gamble than breaking the bank on Callahan.

I agree for sure panzer. If there is a team that would give Cally 6 mill or more per for 5-7 years, and guess what I bet there is at least one team that would, let him go there this summer. More power to him. For our team and for our future, we cannot have Cally with a 6 mill or more per cap hit...no way.

Deal him and move on if he won't come off this stance of 6 mill or more per. He can go elsewhere to get that kind of money if he wants it so badly. I think that is too much for a player like Cally.

On Insider Trading, Darren Dreger discussed Ryan Callahan:

-Dreger, “He wants a lot of money. It’s been widely reported that Ryan Callahan wants a seven-year term around $6 million per, well that isn’t accurate and I am told that it is more than $6.5 million per on a seven-year term and less than $7 million. Whether it’s $6 or as we know now, it’s closer to $7 million, it’s a lot of money and too much for the New York Rangers. There is not a lot of wiggle room in this negotiation and that is why Glen Sather is considering and working towards moving his captain.”

-James Duthie asks if Callahan will get moved before the Friday deadline and Dreger says, “50-50 but that is an easy guess to make at this point. I would say that it’s more unlikely to get done because there is a willingness to push this as far as you can but in the meantime the New York Rangers need to get as much in return as possible. The Chris Stewart deal with the St. Louis Blues is still there, Stewart would be part of it.”

-Callahan is the top ranked player on TSN’s available players list.

Maybe I am crazy, but if I got a 2nd and Stewart for Cally I would make that deal right now. Done and we move on.

Stewart and a 2nd would be a nice deal. At this point even Miller would be doing as much as RC is.

Cally at 5yr 6 mill per get the fu.. out of here. No Steve you heard it wrong. Thats too light. What it really is is Cally at 6.85 for 7 years. What??? ROTFLMAO. Cally has definitely taken way too many pucks to the head. He goes now imo for the best return Sather can get back and this now prompts absolutely no backlash from the fans who don't want their team ties down with Mr. Ego's demands.

Hell no. Cally is clearly on crack now. Probably picked up the habit in the city. Buffalo thinks they can sign him for nothing in the off-season. That's fine. They can have him and watch him do nothing on that team. Basically, trade him for as much as you can get at the deadline. I'm tired of this clown now. He's not even doing a ton to help this team win this year. You could bring Miller up right now and at least get him to be a top PK player right now. The only think Miller wasn't doing was finishing. Big deal. Callahan has a whopping 9 goals right now.

Asking for $6.85 x 7 years is basically saying you want NYR to trade you.

That is INSANE for what he brings especially given because of his style of play he is likely to decline over time

Stewart and a 2nd I would do RIGHT NOW.

McDonough will make a very good captain

Ah, yes. Hockey is definitely a business.

He's out of his damn mind. He's way too streaky and injury prone.

Hopefully that game last night will convince a GM on the fence about giving up a 1st and top prospect for him as a rental to do it.

Great game by Cally last night but he's still not worth what he's asking, $6 mil is still way to generous by Glen, a hometown favorite raise.

Ryan Callahan is not in fact searching for a seven-year deal worth $42 million which was the regularly reported number last week. (NY Post)

A GM who has spoken with Glen Sather about trading for Callahan says that he is looking for seven years at “six plus-plus-plus million per year. Larry Brooks says it’s likely, seven-years and $47 million. (NY Post)

Darren Dreger reported on Monday night that Callahan was looking for seven-years and a deal worth more than $6.5 million

Callahan is not being “low balled” or insulted with the Rangers supposed offer of five-years and $30 million. (NY Post)

The guy is lost. 6.7 mill per. It is amazing to me he thinks he's worth that. YES I bet some stupid team will pay him over 6 mill per, but he has to look and say if I want to stay in NY I simply cannot get that, so do I really want to stay in NY or go for money?

If the Rangers offered 6 mill per for five-years, Cally should have jumped on it.

They're also saying he could re-sign as early as tomorrow so who knows exactly where it ends up. I bet he resigns for 6y/36, which is a year too much but whatever.

If I were a betting man I still bet we re-sign Cally and Girardi. Girardi in the mid 5's. Cally around 6 or so. Maybe a little under 12 mill combined. To me that is too much, especially for Cally who I see in the 5's tops, but it is what it is.

At the start I was hopeful we could/would re-sign both for 10 to 11 mill per total. It appears it will be 1 to 1.5 mill or so more than that, 12 mill or so per total. Is what it is I guess.

If ( I want to say 'when', but I will stick with 'if' for now ) Sather trades
Callahan, it better be for a #1 and a comparable roster player. I love
what Cally brings to the locker room, but he's been injured more than
other players. And yes, this is a business...Whatever is best for the team.

If Glen can resign Girardi before the deadline for $5 mil its shows Dan's commitment to the Rangers because he would definitely get Callahan type money come free agency. Callahan on the other hand has no chance in my opinion of getting $6.5+, he's just posturing. Trading him to another team as a rental and then looking to resign him over the summer is another possibility. Glen's $6 mil offer may be the best Ryan sees come free agency.

Hard to believe we might pay a 3rd line wing who is always hurt 6 mill plus. Unfortunately, the only way I see Sather getting much value back for cally is with a sign and trade and what team is going to sign him for 6 mill plus outside of maybe buffalo?

On NHL Live this afternoon, Dave Maloney asked Bob McKenzie about the status of Ryan Callahan and Dan Girardi.

On Ryan Callahan, “It doesn’t seem that they are close but I do know that Steve Bartlett, the agent for Ryan Callahan, touched base with the Rangers today but I wouldn’t suggest that it was substantive contract negotiations. Right now the two sides seem far apart. The sense is that Ryan Callahan is looking for a seven-year deal of upwards of $6.5 million per year, somewhere between $6.5 and $7 million per year. I think the New York Rangers are prepared to give him $6 million and maybe a bit more than $6 but maybe on a lesser term. We will see how this plays out. I know the Rangers have been kind of working on the deadline of trying to solve this before the Olympic break.”

On Dan Girardi, “similar kind of situation. There is a little bit more optimism that they will get a deal done with him and there has been some dialogue over the last 24-48hours on Girardi’s contract but I don’t think it’s necessarily imminent either.”

It is all relative I guess. If someone, even one team, is willing to pay Cally between 6.5 and 7 mill per then I guess you could argue he is worth that, but to me I think it is nutty to even think he is worth close to that, especially over 6 or 7 seasons.

He is a 3rd line guy. A guy who can score 20 goals +/-. A good solid player. A good solid leader. He is tough and gritty. That is all true, and that is why I would go into the 5's to re-sign him. Without those extra things he would be a guy in the 4's I think.

But for him to act like he is a 6.5 mill per plus player is just crazy. It's what angers me about athletes in a capped sport. I fully get they have short careers. I fully get they need to get paid when they can. But he makes over 4 mill per now. The Rangers offered him 30 mill on a new deal. Why does he have to try and break the bank and make the Rangers overpay when all it will do is hurt their chances to win a cup. I don't get it.

We spent 500 K too much on Hank IMO, I would have liked him at 8 mill per tops. Now we have to overpay Cally as well.

To me Girardi and Cally should both take good solid deals. Deals that will set them both up for life (as if they aren't already set up for life) and show they want to be in NY and want to win a cup. They could easily both re-sign for 5 years and 5 to 5.5 per season. Maybe 5 years 26 or 27 mill each. Why is that so crazy? Look at what the guys on the Sharks did (both of their cap #'s went down). Look at what Sharp did with the Hawks (only a 5.9 mill per cap hit).

If Cally was a lock stud player I'd say yeah he has to get that much. But for what he adds, take an offer in the mid 5's per for 5 seasons and be happy. At this point I would even be okay with 5 years 28-30 mill for each guy. Get them both locked up for 11.5 to 12 mill per total.

Makes me shake my head.

What compounds the problem with Cally's demands is how it will affect Glen's ability to resign other free agents over the summer. Brassard has picked up his game and seems to have adjusted nicely to AV's system, would assume Glen wants him back but what is Derick's agent going to demand, $5 mil? Zuccarello made $1.5 mil this year and is tied for the team lead in scoring, he deserves a nice raise and if Cally's getting $6.5 shouldn't Mats get $4+? Kreider dragged his heels signing his first contract so I don't think he'll be any easier this time around, $3 mil+? Glen deals from a position of weakness if he agrees to Cally's folly. He should hold at the more than generous offer he's already made.

Just look at the names i posted who's salaries in excess of 6 million... none of those trends would trade straight up for as he is in their league

Callahan is a winning player. However, that was probably the first or at best, second game he's played this season where he was dominant. You don't pay players like him 6 million a year. I'm stunned Sather offered him that much. Essentially, he probably figured, replace Richard's dumb contract with a slightly less dumb contract with a younger player.

Players are worth what a team is willing to give them. A particular player might be worth more to one team than another, depending on their situation. I personally don't think Cally is a 6 mil/year player, but based on what he has meant to this team in many ways, I'd have no problem at 6 or 6.3 for 5 years. Every year we're shocked by what players actually get in free agency. What he's asking for is nuts for most teams, but I could see Buffalo doing it. To them, bringing in a needed leader with his work ethic, and maybe filling some seats as the returning hometown hero might be worth it for them. Wouldn't be for us or probably any other team. I couldn't blame Cally for taking it or Buffalo for offering it. I'd say thanks for the memories and good luck.

ill never blame a player to get as much as he can for as long as he can. but in the age of the salary cap and trying to build a championship team that is not a one shot wonder you have to think about dollars and sense...is it sensiable to sign a player that will not score 30 goals a year to such a contract that would/could prevent making moves for other players that are more talented.

also this sets a precedence to others of similar skill level to cash in
