Scoop Jackson recommends that Roy retire. Now.

Fuck him. Brandon can find a new role on this team and still provide value, the way Walton played for the 86 Celtics.

Hmm, he has a good point, although you have to take it with a grain of salt. How can a guy ever hit that high again? I dont think he really believes that retirement is the next thing on roys list, just that he has done what very few have aver done and even less with such a back story.

Only way to top this is to win a wcf etc etc..save a child from a burning building ..

I'm guessing he's not literally serious, just using it as device to illustrate the professional darkness that Roy fell into and emerged from.

My response to his column....

"The columnist must either be a Laker or Dallas fan. Who in there right mind would tell a player to retire mid-playoffs? How ignorant is that?!?!?! You talk about how compelling this story is, then say "Quite man!" That's like telling Forrest Gump to stop fishing for Shrimp. Nice job labeling yourself not a true fan of basketball. Because a true fan of basketball would egg him on to succeed, overcome and prove all of us wrong. Good luck selling this piece of crap Stoop!"

He can aim for a different high - being a member of a championship team sounds like one.

Brandon Roy is a better player than people give him credit for - and he is a bigger warrior than people realize. I believe we will see many more great games from him - even if not as often as before - or as utterly dominant as the last one.

I'm guessing this was a tongue-in-cheek article, with some sarcasm thrown in for good measure.

Reading the comments at the link, it looks like I'm one of a small minority who holds this view. :)

Brandon's story can only be written by Brandon. Everybody seems to have an opinion about his knees -- how long they'll last, how much he'll be able to play, how he can adjust his game, and how fast his abilities will fall off. The problem with that is that nobody, Roy included, really knows those answers and only time will tell. Brandon is going to have to work through this as it unfolds and make decisions accordingly. The last game was the stuff of legends, but there may be many more chapters to be revealed before his story is done. I'm all for not staying too long and exiting on a high note, but what if another year or two could be played at a high level and perhaps provide a championship? Should he pass up that potential opportunity until he knows more about how his knees are going to take the stress?

I sure hope this playoffs, Portland makes it to the finals. I hope Roy has a major contribution to this. Then I would love to have STUPID write another piece on how Roy should retire because he can't top that.

If a very vocal and aggressively persistent faction of the Blazer fanbase had gotten their way about not playing Brandon, Saturday's game would have never happened, and none of us would have been able to witness true greatness. It's why we're fans, players are players, and coaches are coaches. The next guy to go from message board expert to NBA head coach will be the first.

the only reason that would occur to me that Brandon might retire now is if by playing he's risking his long term health... as in stuck in a wheelchair by the time he's 40. Would anyone really blame him for retiring if that were thought to be a strong possibility of continuing to play?

STOMP

Aside from anything Brandon Roy or basketball related, this moron is basically saying..

"If you ever succeed or overcome something in life, just quit. No need to try again, it'll never happen and you will never succeed again".

SO, let's say you successfully beat cancer and it goes into remission. After that, commit suicide.

This.

Bonehead.

Recognize this guy from Saturday's game?

Fuck it. I am so done with this bullshit. The Blazer can never have it easy. Never. They always have to claw for anything. The Blazers can never be the hot team. They can never be the team that always gets the clutch baskets. Fucking Fuck I am so sick of this shit.
What a bonehead.

This game is over

I swear to God, there is a place in hell for Blazer fans. As a matter of fact, Hell exists, and it's a place reserved for Blazer fans. Right now this game reminds me of that Game 5 against Utah in the mid 90s. The Blazers made a complete mockery of the NBA game, because they are mentally fragile and have no killer instinct. No heart, no fire, nothing. This is what I'm used to as a Blazer fan.

This is my take. I think the writer was suggesting that the only way to top his comeback from nowhere as a story would be to make a bigger story out of it by retiring.

I recommend that Scoop Jackson retire from sports writting.

Obviously not his strong suit.

If Roy retires voluntarily, he loses his giant contract. Not going to happen. If the team "retires" him, it's a different story.
