This entire past 4 years has forced me to get off my ass and dig a little deeper into the politics of America, and its history in general. The one debate I had to wrap myself around is whether this country is a Democracy or a Republic. I then had to try and determine the difference between the two (I hadn’t studied this crap since HS Civics class). And one fact became clear; America is NOT a Democracy (Majority rule). It never was, nor was it intended to be. It was (sorta) intended to be a Republic (representative government). But even the Founding Fathers knew (and wrote) that a “true republic” was not sustainable (see other republics in history), so what we ended up with is actually a “hybrid”; representative democracy (like most, if not every Republic in the world). In other words, majority rule is the law in many instances, yet the rights of the minority were intended to be protected from the majority. Unfortunately the left has tried to force the US into a “pure” democracy, which while that sounds “fair”, actually isn’t. The Constitution protects (supposedly) the rights of ALL citizens. But by attempting to foist majority rule on a country that was not founded on that concept, the exact opposite has happened. Constitutionalists dug in their heels and we are now a country held hostage by minority rule. And the left has only themselves to blame for this unfortunate situation. I’m all for progress but the Green New Deal, while admirable.....and necessary in the long run....is pretty much a 180 from where we are now. And unrealistic in terms of a quick (or easy) implementation. America is a big, unwieldy country that has made it totally clear this past year that it does not take to change easily. Hell, it take miles and miles of ocean to turn an aircraft carrier around. America is that air craft carrier.
Personally, I’m not going to get my hair on fire over this SCOTUS pick (because of course, I’m a white male) until I see how she rules on key issues. I have always (always) considered myself a moderate, but the way liberalism has become a speeding, out of control train, I’m not so sure having a right leaning Supreme Court is necessarily a bad thing (for the near future anyway) especially with it looking like the House, Senate and White House could be all Democrats. That is NOT the representative government the Founding Fathers intended. Some brakes are needed to protect the rights of those citizens who do not support a pure democracy.
All that said, I DO NOT support the minority inflicting their moralities on the majority in ways that restrict or deny basic human rights. The minority does not seem to get that, despite their demands that their own rights be protected. The hypocrisy is naked and stark. But I do think every thinking American at this particular time should make an effort to educate themselves on what the Founding Fathers actually intended (And what a Republic is versus a Democracy) before casting their vote. It may (not or may not) clarify some of the issues currently confronting us. At least we’ll have a clearer understanding of what we are voting for, why we are voting that way and what the potential (and real as opposed to straw man) effects of our vote might lead to. (Steps off soap box and retreats under a hail of rotten tomatoes........)
