As I said in a post above I thought Daniel's trip to Tokyo/Okinawa was too hurried. It did get a whole episode, but only about half of it, while the kids had their dramas back home. I felt the history behind Miyagi do was cursory and didn't do justice to it and the memory of Mr Miyagi.
I enjoyed the call backs. I thought Kumiko was well used but maybe should had more screen time with Daniel. I thought Chozen should have had more screen time with Daniel, more training together, more Daniel learning about Miyagi do. etc. Chozen taught him one move how to momentairly paralyze opponents. (I enjoyed Chozen doing the nose thing back to Daniel)
The other blast from the past was the typhoon girl Daniel had saved. She was used well too. There maybe should have been a scene with her and Daniel fixing things with Toyota. Instead it was suggested and implied. That could have been another point to emphasize Miyagi do and what it truly means and how Toyota should see what happened differently.
I was conflicted with the John Kreese flashbacks in LA and Nam. I don't want to pity Kreese or see him as a good dude hidden inside a bad dude that has been made cold and pyscho by war.
I liked it though. We get to see all sides of every main character. The good. The flaws. The bad. That is what makes us human. Its no different with Kreese. But, he is fucked up.
Though Daniel and Johnny have flaws too. Like Ali's character said, there is each side of the story and then the truth.
The redemption arc of Hawk's and the turn to the dark side for Robby were easy to see coming. Robby was always going to join Kreese and Cobra Kai. Hawk's redemption was hinted at all through season 3.
Bad ass finale with Ali returning and brokering peace between Daniel and Johnny. (What was in it for her though...she helped them...I guess maybe they helped her too.)
The big fight between the kids was fun to watch, but the Kreese/Johnny/Daniel fight at the end was intense. I thought a mix of the fight intermixed with Kreese turning bad in nam was well done.
The let's do this the old fashion way, whoever loses the tournament leaves deal at the end was obvious.
Bad ass with Miyagi Do and Eagle Fang, Daniel/Johnny coming together to train the kids together at Miyagis. Loved it
Can Kreese be redeemed? Maybe his lady had a kid before she died or something? It seems there has to be more reason of showing the flashbacks than telling us his past. (Probably just setting up the return if his friend and fellow villian Terry Silver) By showing Kreese good, then turning bad, shows us he can perhaps be redeemed though right?
I don't see it though. I don't see Kreese, Daniel, and Johnny all senseing together peacefully and happily.
I do see the return of Karate Kid III villian Terry Silver. He is "Twig" in the flashbacks. The Captain at one point addresses him as Silver. Kreese saves him twice and he is eternally in Kreese's debt. In fact Kreese calls him at the end of the finale. So, expect to see him in season 4.
Also expect to see Silver's son Snake and possibly Mike Barnes who Laruso fought in Karate Kid Three.
Hillary Swank is also said to be returning. Miyagi-verse oh my!
