Back in February, Seattle's Mayor Ed Murray called for a 2 cent per ounce tax on sugary soft drinks in order to "improve Seattle's educational opportunities for students of color." Per Lynx Media, the tax was expected to raise some $16 million per year.

Of course, when someone on his staff pointed out that a tax on sugary drinks would disproportionately impact the minorities that he was apparently trying to help, Murray knew that something drastic had to happen. So that's when he decided to launch a new attack against the most recognizable symbol of "white privileged institutionalized racism" on the planet: DIET SODA!

Per the Seattle Times:
The changes were recommendations that emerged when staff from the mayor’s office and the office of Councilmember Tim Burgess studied disparate impacts the tax could have on people with low incomes and on people of color, according to Murray.

That work involved conversations with community advocates, public-health professionals and business owners, according to the mayor. After Murray’s initial announcement, some suggested the exclusion of beverages with artificial sweeteners would be unfair because affluent white people tend to consume more diet drinks.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray declared an end to his long political career Tuesday after struggling for months to refute the latest allegations that he paid teenage boys for sex decades ago.

One man first went to the police with charges against Murray in 1984, according to the Seattle Times. Police investigated but brought no charges.

He and a second man again approached reporters in 2008 with claims of abuse by Murray. No news organizations chose to publish the story.

The latest round of charges began with a lawsuit by a 44-year-old man alleging that Murray sexually abused him on numerous occasions when he was a crack-cocaine-addicted teen for payments of $10 to $20.

At the time, Murray was in his 30s. The accuser was 15.

It says right in the fucking articles that it was for education disparities between whites and people of color.

They're the ones rigging it so white taxes go to people of color.

Why waste the money on the school or some babysitting program with enormous costs and little results? Just take it directly from rich white people and give it to poor black people. I always feel better about skipping the middle man. Same reason I refuse to buy tools from the tool truck guys.

ALL SALES TAXES (taxes on goods) make the poor become poorer.

That is the main goal of sales taxes and not an unwanted byproduct.

Poor children will starve even more regularly when these taxes are enacted.

No amount of designating the taxes to "eat healthy" programs will offset the overall burden on poor people's food budgets (their only income/handout source to pay taxes with.
