Pelosi’s False ‘Wall Street’ Denial

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a nationally televised town meeting on Jan. 31: “No, we [Democrats] don’t get much support from Wall Street.” That’s not so.

Democratic House and Senate candidates pulled down nearly $47 million from bankers, stockbrokers, hedge fund officials, venture capitalists and private equity firms in the last election alone, according to tallies by the Center for Responsive Politics.

To be sure, Republican congressional candidates got more — $62 million. But Democrats still received 43 percent of the Wall Street money going to congressional candidates.

Pelosi’s denial of reality came in response to a comment made at the CNN town hall event. Questioner William Marsh, a steel-company executive, suggested that blue-collar, Midwestern “Reagan Democrats” had abandoned the party because they believe it no longer represents their values.

William Marsh, Jan. 31: A lot of these workers feel that the core interest groups of the party do not represent their values. For example, the abortion rights activists, the environmental activists, Wall Street, Wall Street lawyers.

Pelosi: Wall Street?

Marsh: Yes, a lot of Wall Street supports the Democrat Party now and not the Republican Party.

Pelosi: They don’t support me. …No, we don’t get much support from Wall Street.

To check Pelosi’s claim, we turned to the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks campaign money and categorizes it by industry. We selected totals for commercial bankers and for securities and investment firms (which include hedge funds, private equity firms and venture-capital firms) as falling under the general heading of “Wall Street.” The donations can come from individuals, political action committees, or both.

And the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee got $6,676,941 from the securities and investment industry, making it the fourth largest industry source for the DSCC, according to the Center for Responsive Politics’ tallies.

‘They Don’t Support Me’
As for Pelosi’s claim that Wall Street donors “don’t support me,” those in the securities and investment industry actually have contributed more than $1 million to her re-election campaigns since 1989, the third highest total from any industry group, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

And it’s still coming in. Her 2016 re-election campaign received $83,280 from securities and investment firm PACs and employees, and $20,930 from commercial bankers, for a total of more than $104,000.

In addition, Pelosi’s personal PAC — “PAC to the Future” — took in $44,500 from securities and investment sources, and $13,500 from commercial bankers.

The website is perhaps the least overtly partisan “fact checker” in this list. However, the organization came under fire after it published a July 21, 2015, piece called “Unspinning the Planned Parenthood Video,” an entry that defended the abortion provider during the baby-parts scandal. Breitbart’s John Sexton noted that FactCheck.org only addressed one video in a series of at least seven videos exposing the baby-parts trade. Nucatola also suggested Planned Parenthood is satisfied with turning a profit in the body-parts trade, so long as doing so doesn’t make the nonprofit look bad.


Sexton writes: Here is how FactCheck frames Nucatola’s admission: ‘Nucatola does make one statement in the unedited video that suggests to critics that some clinics would be comfortable with a payment that was slightly more than their expenses for providing the tissue.’ Is this really only suggestive to critics? Why isn’t it just a fact that she admitted it despite her obvious concern about getting caught? And is it possible Planned Parenthood has supporters as well? Might the supporters be eager to downplay this admission? FactCheck doesn’t have anything to say about that. It’s another instance of the real story being sidestepped by introducing a partisan narrative, i.e. ‘Republicans pounced.'”


In yet another article concerning FactCheck.org, Breitbart reported the site was forced to “make an embarrassing correction” after it appeared to have made up a quote that never appeared in Peter Schweizer’s book, “Clinton Cash.” The site falsely claimed Schweizer wrote in his book that Hillary Clinton had “veto power” and “could have stopped” the sale of 20 percent of U.S. uranium to the Russian government.


In 2016, FactCheck.org claimed TV host Bill Nye is “more of a scientist than [Sarah] Palin,” and the site listed his “six honorary doctorate degrees, including Ph.D.s in science from Goucher College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute” as evidence for its assertion.


In 2015, FactCheck.org dubbed Donald Trump the “King of Whoppers.”


“In the 12 years of FactCheck.org’s existence, we’ve never seen his match,” the site wrote. “He stands out not only for the sheer number of his factually false claims, but also for his brazen refusals to admit error when proven wrong.”


In a post titled, “Trump’s bogus voter fraud claims,” FactCheck.org stated, “Donald Trump is citing unsubstantiated urban myths and a contested academic study to paint a false narrative about rampant voter fraud in the U.S. and the likelihood of a ‘rigged’ election.”


While Trump said the U.S. has a problem with ballots that are cast by illegal immigrants and on behalf of dead people – a 2014 study in the Electoral Studies Journal shows illegals may have cast as many as 2.8 million votes in 2008 and 2010 and investigations have found that ballots have been cast for dead people in multiple elections – FactCheck.org found, “his evidence is lacking,” and “researchers say voter fraud involving ballots cast on behalf of deceased voters is rare.”


Any examination of a “fact-checking” website would not be complete without a look at the organization’s primary source of funding. FactCheck.org receives the largest amount of its funding from the Annenberg Foundation, which funds a number of nonprofits. The foundation funded the Chicago Annenberg Challenge to the tune of $49.2 million. In 1995, Barack Obama was a founding member of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge. He remained on the board until 2001, when the challenge was phased out.


According to CNN, the Chicago Annenberg Challenge was the brainchild of Weather Underground terrorist group co-founder Bill Ayers. “A review of board minutes and records by CNN show Obama crossed paths repeatedly with Ayers at board meetings of the Annenberg Challenge Project,” CNN reported. The Wall Street Journal reported, “The group poured more than $100 million into the hands of community organizers and radical education activists.”

Alejandro Aparicio Santiago had just been sworn in the indigenous town of Tlaxiaco in the state of Oaxaca on Tuesday morning when two men approached started shooting at him and three other politicians.

Aparicio Santiago was traveling to the a meeting a city hall at 11.30am when he was attacked by the two gunmen, according to the state prosecutor's office.

Villagers quickly jumped into action and apprehended one of the suspects, who has not been identified.

They beat the suspect and detained him before police officers arrived.

Law enforcement is still searching for the second suspect in the town of 40,000 residents.

The wounded mayor was immediately transferred to a hospital wing of the Mexican Social Security Institute where he died from the gunshot wound he suffered in his chest during the brazen attack.

Representative Perfecto Hernandez Gutierrez, who was shot during the alleged assassination plot, was pronounced dead early Wednesday morning at a local hospital.

Councilwoman Cleotilde Santos and another politician were also shot but their medical conditions are unknown.

According to Mexican news outlet Excelsior, Aparicio Santiago is the sixth politician that has been assassinated during the last semester, dating back to the July 1, 2018 elections.

Councilwoman María Ascension Cruz Torres, 55, was shot three times Sunday morning, 48 hours before she was expected to be sworn into office.

'They are cowardly acts.'

The New Year's Day tragic event took place just two weeks after Juarez mayor Olga Kobel, 42, was kidnapped and assassinated just five months after she had won her town's election.

Seriously, this idiotic idea never had any practical justification. Hiring 100 extra Border Patrol agents would do more good - but that doesn't create as good a photo op!

Also, it has been shown that around 90% of the illegal drugs coming into the country from the south come through the Port of entry. Wall won;t stop that and why there are much better methods that can be used for border security. Trump backed himself in a corner when he touted all over the US that Mexico will pay for the wall and now he's blaming others. I still think it's stupid but if Mexico paid for the wall, I would say oh well, at least it ain't costing us anything.
