In Oregon, it's a legal crosswalk as long as the nearest intersection is far enough away. I forget how far away that is. 500 ft.? 300 ft.?

Also, you have to be alert to pedestrians even if they do something dumb.

I thought new cars had a feature that prevents the car from running into a pedestrian. I looked at a new Volvo back in about 2007 that had a feature they advertised as automatically applying the brakes so it was virtually impossible to hit a pedestrian.
