Semi OT: Do you buy products because an athlete/celebrity uses it.

Seeing this new Dame commercial has made me (re)wonder the effect that celebrities and athletes have on a society. It's probably been since Jordan that it really took off... but the psychology nerd in me really wants to know why and how it works and if it works at all.

Obviously that won't get answered here. But for a very small sample size... do athletes sell the goods? Do celebrities? I know it has a great effect on kids, but for the adults, that's what I'm interested in.

Well Dame is probably going to get me to buy his shoes assuming they aren't 200 bucks and i can get a pair that aren't covered in that leopard pattern. Before that i had no interest in buying a player's signature shoes or a product just because a celebrity was hawking it.

That's something completely different. That's accepting a societal acheviement and for that I applaud it. I'm saying products like a sprite or a Kia, Adidas or Nike, etc.

Buying for something like you did I completely understand and I advocate for it. If someone did something to better society or open the world to it, that's awesome!!! All for it.

I don't think that is the question. I think it has to do with pros using the product. Sams might not actually wear his jersey.

For me it depends on the athlete and the product. I'm not going to by a basketball shoe just because Dame's name is on it. But, i have purchased running shoes, that have been worn for multiple world record marathon attempts and ones that are designed by input from high performing athletes. It has more meaning to me when the athlete was involved in the R&D process.

I might buy a product some celeb endorsed, but that is because it was good quality and/or good value, regardless of endorsement.

However, the reverse is true. If someone I loathe endorses a product I may be less likely to purchase it.

Bravery, to me, means fire fighters going in as I am running out. Soldiers putting their life on the line so I can continue saying what I want in this forum.

Not really. If anything, I'll stop using a product if a guy I hate endorses it. Lately, it's Lebron and McDonalds. I stopped drinking Pepsi when Michael Jackson was schlepping it. Shaq, Jordan, Iverson, Jeff Gordon, Juan Montoya, Arod, Reggie Jackson, Terry Bradshaw, Mean Joe Green, and Colin Montgomerie have each had a negative impacted on one or more purchasing decisions in my life, to one degree or another.

Agreed. I know I convinced my parents to buy stuff from nagging & my kids are now learning that trick too. It's just a matter of time that they start asking for certain products because "insert celebrity" endorses it.

The reason companies pay for endorsements is to hit that 12-26 age bracket.

Well, it is brave to come out or break racial barriers as well as being a first responder. There are different versions of brave, and they apply to both, not one above the other. There should be no need to say one is brave and one is not, they both have an amazing amount of bravery and courage.
