Sen. Ron Wyden and Jim Etzel continue efforts to bring the WNBA back to Portland

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Sport Oregon CEO Jim Etzel held a press conference Friday to release a letter urging WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert to consider Portland for the league’s next expansion.

The letter also included the endorsement of more than 140 local businesses that offered their support for adding a Portland franchise to the 12-team league.

“She’s going to be hearing from dozens upon dozens of local businesses, one clear and one last message: ‘Rip City is poised to be a WNBA city,’” Wyden said during the press conference held at Sport Oregon. “We know that there are other cities out there, but we don’t know the word no and disappoint and all the rest we’re here because we believe.”

If those businesses are interested in spending an average of the equivalent of about 1 employee per year, they could fully support a WNBA team... What are we waiting for?

It failed here already. Not sure why thy want to try again?

I’m not sure if expansion is the best idea when your business isn’t profitable. It would further water down their talent pool. They need to be profitable first.

Can the new WNBA team join the Pac-12?
