Sergio a Knick?

They really don't have a lot to choose from.

With KP already interviewing projected top-10 picks in Chicago, maybe it's part of a deal for the #8 pick?

David Lee could be another possibility as well.

Very interesting.

Ed O.

Draft picks must be involved? or 09-10' salaries? otherwise why wait to announce the deal?

RealGM's wire tap says the Blazers will trade Sergio to the Knicks on draft night.

Interesting. Steph Curry to Portland?

wow spanish-english is hard to read not flow well...broke straw back glass! and it sounds like he is signing as a free agent not as a trade?!?!?! whaaA?

Not quite sure what to make of this. If we grab a PG here, it says a lot about what management thinks about Bayless, and I'm not sure I agree. If it was for Blair a week ago, I'd be all for it, but since people are talking about his knees now, I don't know. In KP I trust...

If true, I'd imagine draft picks are involved. I remember last year and the whole Bayless trade couldn't be announced for a couple days after the draft and KP couldn't comment on it which made for a weird press conference and situation.

I hope this is something goodfor us! I'm also excited to see how Sergio plays in NY. He could be an instant fan favorite there, especially with the contingent of Spanish fans there. Or they could really tire of him and his terrible jumper. But if he starts, Sergio could become one of the top 10 assist leaders in the NBA.

Wow, so I assume Sergio's agent talked to his Spanish sources first and then we'll get some confirmation from an American source soon.

I doubt it will be for straight up for #8. I don't think Sergio has that much value. Nate Robinson? I doubt that too if this is supposed to be a draft night deal.

If it is for #8, maybe Sergio #24, a couple 2nd rounders, and next year's #1.

"Said and done. The player's agent, Jose Ortiz, who had already had contacts with the Knicks and several teams in February, reached a settlement with the New York franchise for the next three seasons."

Since when are teams permitted to negotiate with players under contract to other teams? That sounds a lot like tampering to me.

That said, I hope it's true.

Mark my words. Sergio leaving Portland this year was inevitable, but I feel pretty strongly about this.

Nate not putting enough effort to develop him here will come back to bite us in the ass.

The downside of this IMO if we get No. 8 is we get younger once again with another lottery pick. I'm hoping KP has some kind of plan of bringing in some solid vets into the fold at some point. We're ready to contend next season.

I doubt it. If the players do acquire the 8th pick, look for them to move up or use it to get a vet. I very much doubt they keep the pick. Perhaps KP is making a play for Rubio. If he's able to trade Sergio and change for the 8th, KP is the man.

If it were for future second rounders, that wouldn't have to wait for draft night and seems too small time for KP.

David Lee can't be traded on draft night.

IMO, all things point to being the #8 pick. Of course, I think more would be going to NY along with Sergio.

I consider this nonsense. There were tons of minutes for him to play, a shooting coach going to help him in person and the like - Sergio is just allergic to defense and is not a good scorer.

You can only spend so much time and effort to fit a square peg in a round hole. Sergio does not work in a half-court system and the Blazers are built around a Roy/Oden/LMA foundation - where 2 of these players excel in the half-court and one is good either way. You can see that in years to come Portland's offense is going to be built around an inside-out model taking advantage of Oden's physical presence and Roy's ability to break the defenses from the perimeter in half-court sets.

You adjust the support roster to the stars, not the other way around - and Sergio, quite frankly, is not a star.

Here is a translation I lifted from another board;

June 25th, 2009. Madison Square Garden. In this day we celebrate the NBA draft. In this day we will officially recognize the future of Sergio Rodriguez. Officially we can anticipate that, after three seasons in Portland, the point guard will realize another dream in his promising career as a basketball player: dress in a New York Knicks jersey, one of the teams with most prestige in the NBA.

According to sources of the New York team, contacted by Yahoo-Eurosport, the agreement was closed 20 days ago between the Blazers and the Knicks. [Bad Translation] The environment of the player, who does not want to make declarations until the 25th, has been caught up in the recent days in closing daily affairs of what will be the daiy life of the player n New York?[/Bad Translation]

The coach of Italian origin, Mike D'Antoni, has been the main pusher for the acquiring of "El Chacho" for the Knicks. The New York team faces a period of transition in waiting for the 2010-2011 season, in which it wants to pound in monumental effect with the acquiring of Lebron James, who in the summer of next year will be a free agent once having finished his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The recruitment of Sergio, who perfectly fits the mold to the type of game that New York would make with James, would have collateral consequences for another one of our great guards, Ricky Rubio, who will be left without a place in the Big Apple's team.

Like this closes the first chapter of Sergio Rodriguez in the best league in the world. One more period of lights and shadows that of a rose garden, in which there have been lights and shadows, but that has left well to the clear that Nate McMillan does not trust in his qualities to direct those of Oregon. In this last season, the player participated in 80 games, including 13 as a starter when Steve Blake suffered a shoulder injury. His averages were 4.4 points and 3.6 assists in 15 minutes. The drop that topped the cup came in the 1st round of the playoffs during the series against Houston, in which he averaged only 5 minutes per game.

At the conclusion of the last game, #11 of the Blazers declared to the news publication "The Oregonian": "Here, I Don't think I can do anything more. It's impossible. I don't know what will be my future, but I think something is going to happen, whether a trade or something. I trust in me and feel that I need a change.

Said and done. The player's agent, Jose Ortiz, who had already had contact with the Knicks and various other teams in the month of February, came to an agreement with the New York franchise for the the next 3 seasons.

In the meantime, the player continues in Madrid, training under the orders of Jota Cuspinera, coach of Students- with the objective to improve the defense and change his shooting technique. The objective: start the season at the tob and leave good sensations from the first minute where he makes his new home: Madison Square Garden. Change of garden for one of our big players. Hopefully it will be to improve.

Call it intuition, blind faith, nonsense, whatever, but I'll stick to it. When he comes back to RG and lights us up, I'll be vindicated. :ghoti:

amir that was my feeling as well rubio....i just hope that nate isnt allowed to veto anything...

This seems odd. Almost as if this news was not meant to be out until draft day. The article is dated June 25, 2009 which is almost three weeks away. The article also says the deal was agreed to 20 days ago. Is that twenty days from today or from June 25, 2009? Very odd.

Also, since they say the trade can not be announced until the day of the draft, that would mean the 8th pick is involved. The Knicks do not have their pick next year, so they must pick at 8 this year. After they pick they can trade the player.

Sign and trades are not an option as they can not be done until mid July. That would go against the article saying the deal would be announced draft night.

Portland drafted Rush last season, so inclusion of our 24th pick alone would not cause a delay.

Just by working through the steps it leads to inclusion of the 8th pick in my estimation, which would mean a larger deal. Maybe taking on some crap contract.

I'll believe it when I see it. I wouldn't be surprised if the Blazers pretty much brought the same lineup on to the court as they had last year.

Notes:

2nd Year Salary for Pick #8: $2.22 Mil
2nd Year Salary for Pick #24: $1.00 Mil
2nd Year Salary for Pick #33: $0 Guaranteed Salary

Sergio Salary after 2009-10: $0 if they don't pick up option ($2.8 Mil if they do)

So, if the NYK trade #8 for Sergio, #24, #33, they can save $1.2 Mil if they dump Sergio (for LeBron). If they can't get LBJ (or other uber FA), they could give Sergio a qualifying offer.

Not sure, I'd do this if I were the NYK, but remember the last line of the summary article: The trade is being driven by the COACH, not the GM.

Of course, other players (such as David Lee/Travis Outlaw) could be involved.

When he comes back to the RG and lights us up will be the day hell freezes over or he is the starting PG of Real Madrid playing an exhibition game against our summer-league roster playing European rules...

Sergio does not light people up, especially people that play some defense.

He is a backup in the right system - and there is a chance that this system will be in NY (He will not be a starting PG there - because D'Antoni's PGs need to be able to score).

Sergio is going to rock it big time under D'Antoni.

I can't wait to steal him in my fantasy draft next year. He will be a stats monster.
