For over five years now we have heard the slogan “Make America Great Again”. Yet not since the Civil War has this country been so divided and at each other’s throats. So……….serious question: When was the “Great America” the Right is trying to get back to, and what exactly made it so “great”? What exactly is it that is keeping us from being “great” again? Seems like the only people pushing the “great America” myth are those with white skin. I genuinely want to know what the “greatness” involved and what “happened” to it.

It was great when Black people had no civil rights, when Latinx people did not speak Spanish in public, when abortion was illegal, when gays and lesbians stayed in the closet, and when there were only white men in positions of power.

All this. And women stayed home to cook and clean I might add.

Bullshit. For many of us who bought in the first time, it had nothing to do with social status’s. It had to do with cleaning the swamp of all the corruption in politics.

making america great again, to many of us, meant making our politicians honest and held accountable. Nothing more and certainly wasnt defining any sexist or racist thoughts or movements…

But hey labels work great in todays world so lets just go with anyone who wanted to make it great is just a sexist bigot….

wtf ever…

They are talking about the 50's when Black people were still segregated and women were still obedient.

Cleaning corruption? I am not sanguine about politicians but was there ever a US president more corrupt than Trump? He made millions off the presidency as did his entire family.

okay but how would anyone know that until after he was elected?

Again.. the votes came in based on the sentiment. Not the results….

Even if it did start that way for some, we both know what it has become.

Maybe by watching him speak during his rallies or at the debates. Looking at his actions and words. It was all there.

I get the sentiment of wanting someone who could root out corruption and change things, I really do. That appeals to me too. But, Trump?

C’mon OB. We’re human beings, with all that that entails. We are emotionally driven (for the most part) in everything we do. Sentiment is an emotion. It is the rare individual who can remain dispassionate or clinical about anything. And Trump has been an unfortunate figure in the American consciousness since the ‘70’s. Anyone who didn’t see his greed, dishonesty, venality and egotism over the past forty years is either frighteningly stupid or utterly oblivious…….so yeah, where that pile of dung is concerned, I am driven by emotions…….along with basic intelligence and social awareness.

Even if it did start that way at, we both know what it has become.

sure. But the premise of the question was based on what the voters felt making america great again meant.

I think my answer covers a decent percentage of republican voters and most all who voted for him the first time but not tue second.

The guy lost the last election. Isn't president regardless of what he says.

Some people are giving him way too much energy.

Instead of focusing on him focus on how to ensure he doesnt win if he runs.

The best way to do that is to make sure either Biden does a great job or he steps down and the dems put up a better figurehead to run.

The obsession with what the other party does wrong is our whole issue as a country.
Focus more on what you believe in aNd finding politicians who believe the same and support them.

All this energy spent on trump is stunting the growth of anti trumpers.

agreed to an extent but we have let emotions surpass facts and to an extent even, common sense.
We, as a people. Need to check thar and get back to the facts of things and make decisions based off of them and then move on.

ill add that other than his tv show, i knew little about trump other than he owned real estate and a casino.. until he tossed his hat in the political ring and his speeches were about cleaning the swamp. Not putting women back in the kit hen. He said many times cleaning the swamp meant getting corruption out of the government.
So because you may have known about him since the 70’s doesnt mean most people knew anything more about him than the tabloid headlines.

He got a lot more votes the 2nd time

We live in a world where facts are just called fake news now and don't matter

he did? But yet lost? I didnt look at the numbers just final percents.

Yes

2016 - 62,984,828

2020 - 74,222,958

But, a hell of a lot more democrats voted who did not in the first election. Thus his loss

Hillary 2016 - 65,853,514

Biden 2020 - 81,283,098

okay? So convictions? Or is this another opinion peice?
screwing people isn’t necessarily illegal. But the evidence is clearly out there. Remember trump university?

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...bills-republican-president-laswuits/85297274/

At least 60 lawsuits, along with hundreds of liens, judgments, and other government filings reviewed by the USA TODAY NETWORK, document people who have accused Trump and his businesses of failing to pay them for their work. Among them: a dishwasher in Florida. A glass company in New Jersey. A carpet company. A plumber. Painters. Forty-eight waiters. Dozens of bartenders and other hourly workers at his resorts and clubs, coast to coast. Real estate brokers who sold his properties. And, ironically, several law firms that once represented him in these suits and others.

Trump’s companies have also been cited for 24 violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act since 2005 for failing to pay overtime or minimum wage, according to U.S. Department of Labor data. That includes 21 citations against the defunct Trump Plaza in Atlantic City and three against the also out-of-business Trump Mortgage LLC in New York. Both cases were resolved by the companies agreeing to pay back wages.

Litigator in chief

In addition to the lawsuits, the review found more than 200 mechanic’s liens — filed by contractors and employees against Trump, his companies or his properties claiming they were owed money for their work — since the 1980s. The liens range from a $75,000 claim by a Plainview, N.Y., air conditioning and heating company to a $1 million claim from the president of a New York City real estate banking firm. On just one project, Trump’s Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City, records released by the New Jersey Casino Control Commission in 1990 show that at least 253 subcontractors weren’t paid in full or on time, including workers who installed walls, chandeliers and plumbing.

The actions in total paint a portrait of Trump’s sprawling organization frequently failing to pay small businesses and individuals, then sometimes tying them up in court and other negotiations for years. In some cases, the Trump teams financially overpower and outlast much smaller opponents, draining their resources. Some just give up the fight, or settle for less; some have ended up in bankruptcy or out of business altogether.

I wouldn’t think someone who has screwed people over and over again would all of a sudden stop when he gets more power.

The man is a very corrupt businessman. I don’t know how he was able to get people to believe he wasn’t gonna do the same in politics lol

okay but most politicians screw people. Hell if its legal most people screw people too.
Plus many of these claims are not through full discloser of all facts and knowledge so common people come to their own conclusions… based on emotions. Not the facts or lack of.
At any rate. I answered the OP’s question based on the first election and stand by my post.

Emotions have nothing to do with trump screwing people over for decades. That’s laughable.

whats laughable is you thinking the statement screwing someone over isnt an opinion, based on emotions when there is no court verdict on said topic.
What one person sees as being screwed another may see as simply taking advantage of current legalities.

No one said that greed is a good thing but if he is guilty of greed, so are 90 percent of politicians and 75 % of Americans.

What?

Trump has screwed many people over.

That's a fact. There is no emotion or opinion in that sentence.

He screwed the students of his fake University over.

He screwed the many people and cities he never paid over.

Etc Etc

Relabeling it to make it sound better is a confidence game. Don't do that.
