SETH Curry to Portland

I find your concern on potentially losing a backup PG a little odd given your "who gives a rip" attitude about trading CJ for Kawhi and potentially having him walk after a year.
My concern is because I actually like Seth Curry’s game and want him to be a possible replacement at SG if we trade CJ... I don’t like the 1 year rental on him... the difference with Kawai is we retain his bird rights and would be able to go over the cap to pay him... and after a year with Dame as a teammate I think Kawai would stay

It's the new normal in the NBA. The Warriors have zero chance of re-signing Boogie if he's healthy, but they didn't let that stop them from getting at least a part of a year of his services. Guys like Curry can be picked up every single year. If he loves playing next to Dame, he can take his option year and then get paid the next year. If not, c'est la vie.

If seth has a good year...that's what the blazers got out of the deal. A good cheap year for a bench player. They didnt sign him hoping he becomes his brother suddenly and we lock him in.

It does negate the argument that bringing in all these new SGs is setting the stage for another move. Curry was the only one with a chance to actually make an impact - and if he is just a one year rental, he is obviously not part of any plan.

I doubt we move CJ, but if we did, I think the 1 year curry deal is a gap bridging to trent for the following season

If Trent becomes a productive NBA player, that might be the bright spot of this whole off-season. I didn't follow the kid in college, so I have no real opinion about his potential.

After a night, I think we're all sleeping on this move. He was a terrific scorer before his injury. If he's healthy, he's better than Napier/Pat/et al.

Don’t say “all”. I already said I like this move. For the folks concerned about losing him if he has one good year, well, look around.... contracts are settling down (unless you’re an All-NBA’er). If Seth has a good year and wants to be here, I’m sure he’d still be affordable with the MLE.

Root for his success and don’t worry about him leaving. I believe we’ll be able to keep him should it work out for both sides.

We also don't know how next summer will be financially. If we traded CJ or others it's possible to get some salary relief next summer.

At least we haven't brought in more cap crippling contracts.

Did not re-sign:
Pat C
Bazz
Ed

So far we've acquired:
Drafted Simons (rookie salary)
Traded for Trent Jr. (rookie salary)
Signed Stauskas (1-yr, vet min)
Signed Seth (2-yr, $5.6M)

Looks like PA and NO going deep into the Thrift Store Bargain Bin. Trent Jr may end up being our jewel during this Draft & FA period.

Biebs after contract: a negative asset
Crabbe after contract: not an asset
ET after contract: a negative asset

Aminu after contract: a definite asset
Harkless after contract: a definite asset
Davis after contract: a mediocre asset
Just need to chime in to make a minor correction, and addition.
  • Crabbe should also be listed as a negative asset - we'll be paying something like $3M over 5 years (?) for the pleasure of NOT having Crabbe
  • Vonleh is another negative asset - we paid to get rid of him.
  • And Vonleh's negative status can trace back to Nic - Neil essentially paid to get rid of Nic so he could pay Turner...the biggest negative asset on the team (in the league?).
Also, I suspect Aminu's asset class mirrors Davis'. We shall see this season whether he brings us any value, or whether he walks for nothing.

Neil has done an abysmal job at identifying/collecting assets. The only assets worth a damn are Dame, Collins, and CJ...probably in that order.

Neil got rid of Nic to appease Lamarcus who said he'd played his last game with the guy thinking we'd re-sign him in the offseason.

Neil also let Rolo walk for nothing, to sign with the fucking knicks for $11 mil per.

But hey, we spent $10 mil per on Leonard. We saved $1 mil.

I missed Rolo during the "rebuilding" years.

He is doing Curry, or more likely his agent, a favor. If the Blazers get anything out of it, that's a bonus. That is also a bass-ackward way for a GM to think.
Who is Curry's agent?

I completely agree with you by the way.

I don't think we'll have the MLE to use next year if we use it this year. Don't you only get it every other year?

Rolo mailed it in after the allstar break...he was a big disappointment..guy started out great and fizzled at the season end every year...he came off the bench in Chicago end of last season...we dodged a bullet letting him go...the lottery Knicks didn't even keep him around

You have the MLE every year if you want. It's the Bi-Annual Exception that you can't use in consecutive years.

Rolo is really slow.....Meyers may or may not have a good contract year....I have no idea how he plays now as he doesn't get to play but he doesn't have to beat Ed Davis for a job now

Slower feet/quicker wits. I can never decide if Meyers is the least motivated player I have seen in years, or if he just has the worst B-Ball instincts. Rolo had less raw talent, but he sure knew the game better.

Meyers may have the slowest "twitch" reactions I have ever seen in a basketball player, combine that with no apparent instincts its a "deadly" combo:banghead2:

His last half season with the Blazers was a disappointment. It was like he knew the team was going to be broken up, and the heart went out of his game. I think the first season struggles were more about it being a big increase in his minutes played.

Edit: Nope, I was wrong. It was the season *before* he became a Blazer that his minutes took a huge leap.
