Setting The Record Straight On Kanter Departure

Been some discussion on the real reason Kanter signed elsewhere. I was under the impression it was because Whitehead was on the table and the window of time was very small to get him or lose him so it forced the Blazers to have Kanter make a decision in a 45 minute time window?

Others say it was because the Blazers already knew Hood was going to commit to the team, but Kanter was the first choice so that is why the clock was put on him?

Naturally there is a ton of "Kanter" bashing going on for his press statements. I personally loved him playing in Portland and without him a first round exit could have very well been possible. He simply made the team better and he gave us everything he had in the playoffs pushing through a shoulder injury. Now fans are turning on him because apparently he said the Blazers forced him to sign elsewhere.

So which is it? What is the real reason Kanter did not sign?

I have nothing to bash Kanter about. I really liked what he did here, I liked that he tried to go when he clearly wasn't right. There is part of me that think's his schtick would eventually have gotten kind of old, but I like Kanter.

I think the truth is none of us are privy to what "really" happened. I tend to think they gave him some time 6 minutes, 45 minutes whatever it was but he and his agent had to know what the options were. I think they were willing to bring him back, but they couldn't "do nothing", while they waited on him since they had other deals going.

For the record, I've followed Hood most of his career and he's an up and down type of guy on the court, but off the court he's been one of my favorite guys, I am thrilled that he'll be back and I hope that Dame / Portland can get the "up" version of him more often than not.

Other Blazer outlets...talking bad things about everything Blazers no matter how well they play or how deep a playoff run they make...it gets old. As a lifelong Blazer fan (meaning since 1970) it took me a long time to become numb to most of it but there are still those who claim to be "Blazer Gods" on all matters and that they are the "real Blazer fans!" Yep...those are the ones bashing Kanter saying that he is "dead" to them...as they forget everything that Kanter brought to the team this year. Very disappointing to see fans act this way at times.

I think Kanter was slightly overrated here but I have nothing negative to say about him other than some of his political issues seem as though they could potentially overshadow the team at times. I’d rather have Whiteside and his expiring this season than 2 more years of Kanter.

I hadn't noticed fans "turning" on him. I have noticed a lot of fans are glad he's been replaced by Whitehead, which they see as an upgrade.

My assumption has been paragraph 2. Kanter had to already know what was on the table from Portland long before the "45 minute" deadline. My assumption has been that the Blazers had a chance to get Hood for a good deal, they couldn't get both players, Kanter was their first choice, so in actuality it was the Blazers who were on the clock. The fact that Kanter wouldn't commit is all you need to know as to why the Blazers went with Hood.

As for Kanter's disputed (by Dame) "spin".....whatever gets him through the day.

He was given 45 minutes to decide. According to reports, he wasn't sure what to do, and felt time pressure. This is an unrealistic scenario, so I'm not sure what really happened.

Why unrealistic?
Because his agent would have told him more than a month in advance that if the Blazers made an initial offer, this is how much that offer would be. He didn't have 45 minutes, more like a month and 45 minutes.

He signed elsewhere for similar $$$ to that which we offered.

Olshey brought him in and he did what they wanted him to do backup Nurk and fill in if something happen to Nurk. But he probably play better on the defensive side what they expect. He probably was the Blazers 1st choice but he couldn't commit right at that moment and they knew that they also wanted Hood but the way free agent went really quick they knew they had to get one and Hood committed and Kanter couldn't that 1st day and so they went with Hood. Now do I think they would they trade for Whiteside my answer is yes.

Portland gave him a 45 minute deadline, but I think common sense would say his camp knew that offer was there before that deadline, but may have been caught off-guard when they received that deadline call

If Kanter would have signed that deal, then the Whiteside trade wouldn't have happened, IMO. Without Hood, the Blazers would have 'needed' Harkless, and having both Kanter & Whiteside (plus Nurkic) might have created more issues than Dame's leadership could have kept buried

this might be another one of those 'failed' deals that end up good for Portland
