"It would mean a lot," D'Antoni said of an O'Neal acquisition. "That's a big question that's got to be thought over and pondered."

Phoenix was competing with a Dallas bid that included Josh Howard to acquire O'Neal.</div>

Apparently the Suns get a 1st Round Pick from Miami in the trade.

Dallas was seriously going to give up Josh Howard for Shaq? WOW
 
I don't see how you guys are saying that its bad for PHX?

Yeah Shaq has played pretty badly this year, but you have to remember that when motivated, he is unstoppable and together with Amare (another unstoppable force) will break havoc throughout the league.

Plus they have Nash.
 
Wow could you imagine a Dirk/Shaq front court?

So now we know that Cuban wants to wheel and deal. Taking a step back to the Lakers and now losing to the Suns hopefully his lust for Kidd gets bigger.

How the hell, please...I"m not some biased Laker fan, how the hell...is Shaq going to play in that offense? How is he going to stay healthy? When Shaq goes down how is Nash and Amare going to stack up against Kobe/Gasol/Bynum/Odom, Dirk, Howard, and Devin Harris (maybe Kidd), ??

I think this is a STUPID deal for Phoenix.

This could be interesting...they can still run, if no fast break bucket is available then they can dish it to Shaq or Amare on the inside for easy FGs. You can't double either Shaq or Amare and the outside shooters will have easier shots due to the interior game. Honestly if Shaq stays healthy then there offense will be more efficient and possibly even more potent.

Defensively they are better off...Shaq will give them much more of an interior prescene versus the West's dominant bigman...no doubt its a risky move but its high reward move.

Shaq is old.
Shaq is injury prone.
Shaq is declining.
Shaq is expensive.
Shaq is not a good fit for the Suns' offense.

Marion is much younger.
Marion is durable.
Marion is at his prime.
Marion is making a decent salary.
Marion is a good fit for the Suns' offense.

Exactly. A happy and motivated Shawn Marion fits beautifully in Phoenix's system. It's a match made in heaven. But the fact of the matter is that he's not happy and he has been playing with minimal effort this season. They needed to get rid of him somehow.

I am very skeptical about how Shaq will fit in Phoenix, as everyone else is. They are going to have to slow the game down a bit more when Shaq is on the floor, and that may hurt their overall offense in a lot of ways. At the same time, however, you still have to double Shaq at times and that will still leave a lot of shooters open. So, it's really give and take. I'm very interested to see how this plays out.
 
Stupid trade for both team imo. Obvious reasons for Phoenix, but Miami to. Marion can get them what, best case senerio 8th spot in the East. If they would have played out the season, they would have gotten a top 5 pick and a shot at either Derrick Rose or Beasley, and could have been contending for a championship within 3 years, now they ruined it. marion isn't exactly a proven winner, this guy had Amare and Joe Johnson on his side, and he still couldn't get Pheonix to the playoffs.

Chemistry don't play defense, holmes.

They weren't a great defensive team last year, and that was BEFORE they traded Kurt Thomas and Marion away.

So now that they've got Shaq, Amare and Nash all playing 40 mpg, who'll play defense? And on top of that, how are Shaq and Nash going to co-exist in an offense? Will Shaq speed up (and destroy his knees) or will Nash slow down (and destroy the offense)? How does any of this make sense?

The Heat are better off getting a proven player than banking on a top draft pick. The only negative I see from this trade is Marion's ability to opt out of his contract next season. But if he does, the Heat lose about $17M from the cap.

Even if the Suns deem it necessary to trade Marion, they could have gotten a much better deal than an overpaid, over-the-hill Shaq. Hell, trading for an expiring contract would have been more beneficial to the Suns. Especially for the Suns who have been obsessed with not paying luxury tax.
 
Done in response to Gasol. they're sayiing that Amare should be a PF in this league. But geez in the Suns scheme he's the perfect center. i thought they should have pushed for AK47. The guy defends and fills the lane on the break. I thnk they're desperate. Plus I'm hearing Sarver-Kerr wants to put their stamp on the team.....D'Antoni may also be on a shortleash.

This keeps him away from a front court of him, Dirk & Josh Howard.

You could think of it from this way: Miami wasn't going anywhere with Shaq. They did this trade purely for financial reasons. Whether it's at the end of this season or the next, Marion's coming off their payroll, while Shaq would have a few more seasons left with that heeefty contract.
 
Amare lets opposing players score at will on him. The Suns aren't built for the playoffs because they can't play defense. But they think Shaq can change that? This isn't 2002, Shaq is DONE. Miami would pull off robbery with this deal. No wonder Riley is waiting on the Suns to say yes. I bet he's got his fingers crossed, and drooling.
