On October 2–just one day after Obama suggested an Australian-like gun ban might be the way forward for America–a gunman opened fire outside a daycare by State Crime Command in Sydney, Australia. Fox News reports “at least two are dead.”
Details are scant, but
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that “the gunman, who one witnessed said was dressed in a black gown, opened fire on a police IT worker outside the State Crime Command, which houses some of the state’s top detectives, in Parramatta at 4.35pm on Friday.”
Parramatta real estate agent Edwin Almeida heard shots and looked out the window, where he “saw a man in a black gown pacing and waving a gun outside the police centre.” He said “his frightened staff ran into their office and heard three to four gun shots.”
An officer at the State Crime Command said officials had detected increased “chatter,” leading them to believe an attack was coming. He said “every officer had been ordered to wear their guns on them at all times this week, even while at their desks.”
The shooting in Australia came the day after Obama held up Great Britain and Australia as counties that tackled gun crime by disarming law-abiding citizens.
Obama reacted to the attack in the Umpqua Community College gun free zone by saying:
"We know that other countries, in response to one mass shooting, have been able to craft laws that almost eliminate mass shootings. Friends of ours, allies of ours — Great Britain, Australia, countries like ours. So we know there are ways to prevent it."
In December a gunman took hostages in a Sydney cafe. A 34-year-old cafe manager and a 38-year-old mother were killed in that standoff.
