Should Neil be on the hot seat?

I absolutely don't think Neil should be on the hot seat. Olshey has had one directive to date, convince Lamarcus to stay. We heard rumblings 2 years ago that Lamarcus asked for a trade. He has busted his ass to do everything Lamarcus wanted. Paul Allen knows this. Now it looks like that work was for naught. At least let the man do his job completely without some Prima Donna in the way. If the retooling goes ugly after next summer then maybe we talk about hot seat, but seriously Neil has gone a damn good job to date.
If the job was "convince LMA to stay" (and really, only PA could've ordered that) then you could say he busted his butt but was dealt a losing hand. If it was "keep the team in the playoffs every year", he endangered it by hitching his plans to LMA's whims. He let a UFA get to free agency, whether it was by trusting the UFA or by trusting his skills to bring him back. Regardless, if LMA leaves, Neil's cachet takes a hit from me. The guy who signed Gordon only to ditch him once CP3 was available didn't pull the trigger on any packages for LMA over the last two years since LMA's initial frustrations.

(Edit: Changed "done it" to "ordered that" to clarify)

He didn't trade him on the risk he might leave.

It's harder to trade a guy who will be a UFA. The risk for the team taking him in trade is he bolts like DHoward did to the Lakers.

Rather than "let him become a UFA," it looks to me like Olshey did everything in his power to get LMA to stay. In the modern CBA, guys becoming UFA and re-signing with their team is pretty common. Asik just re-signed with New Orleans, for example.

Yeah but I don't think that's on him. I think that's on Paul Allen and.Lamarcus and Olshey is stuck in a lose lose there. Let's see what plays out. I really hope he chooses Phoenix and we can pry some players away.

The Blazers will not get "nothing" for LMA, they'll have a LOT of cap space. Anyone you'd trade LMA for might not be as good as the guys you sign with the cap space.

FWIW

I think if you want LMA to stay, you do exactly what Neil did.

Wow, good job digging up those numbers. I didn't realize that such a small percentage of UFA resigned with their old team.

When LMA told Neil he wasn't going to re-sign with the Blazers in 2013, they had a big offer from CLE including at least #1 overall, #19 and Tristan Thompson (some rumors had future 1st instead of the #19 or Thompson).
When LMA didn't sign the max extension last year, I said you should trade him while you could and get a similar package to what Love brought for CLE.

Now, we get the chance to throw money and hope that Greg Monroe or Roy Hibbert graces us with their services. Cap space!

That's true, cap space shouldn't be considered "nothing". You're supposed to be able to get a pretty decent player with max money.

I don't think we can know if Olshey should be on the hot seat. We aren't privy to the behind the scenes work. PA will have to look at everything Olshey has done and determine if his setbacks are due to poor decisions or lack of options due to the market.

Wow, Anthony Bennett for LMA? Woot! (sorry for the sarcasm).

Tristan Thompson is ok, sure, but Monroe is better IMO.

Did it occur to you that they wouldn't have picked Anthony Bennett? Sure they probably wouldn't have picked the best player (Gobert/Giannis), but at the very least they would have gotten Noel (Solid), Oladipo (Good), or Len (Solid).

All we do know is Bennett went first. We don't know that there was a real offer for LMA from Cleveland, just rumors reported in the tweeter thingy.

I'm sorry but Olshey is still a damn good gm even if LA leaves. Look how young we have gotten in the past week. We have a lot of young players who can actually play and be developed.

We can't keep firing GMs because Portland sucks as an NBA city to a lot of players. He is a keeper, I will stand by that.

I would keep Olshey over Stotts.

Not to say I would run Stotts out of town but not sure the team Olshey is going to put together (if he can even get anyone to sign) will be Stotts cup of tea.

The angry part of me fee like the only seat Olshey should be on is his ass on the sidewalk, but the other part of me sympathizes with him...you know he's gotta have something hard in that coffee this morning.

The Bucks have a brighter future than we do. The frickin' T'Wolves have a brighter future.

If Ole' isn't on the hot seat, there is no seat to get hot.

no, Neil was hired in 2012. Right before the Lillard draft. Roy was amnestied long before that, and Greg was well gone.

Still a shambles of sorts. Just LMA and who?

There are no excuses!

Not gonna be a popular opinion, but here it goes...
I blame this whole mess on.... Matthews. If Matthews doesn't have this stupid "I want to make $15 mil/year and be a 2nd option on a team" bullshit, we trade Batum and the rest of the band comes back together.

...and it's looking like it'll strand Matthews in Sacramento. What a dumbass.

I can't be mad at that one either. Asking for 15 mil a year 4 months after popping that achilles and nobody has seen you play, they should just expect you're gonna be good to go at that price, It's ridiculous. I get it, hes dedicated and a hardworking guy, but he needed to be realistic. If Wesley came down in price and Lamarcus had a desire to be with the team and help recruit Monroe before he got signed or somebody else, this would be a whole different situation.

I like Olshey and free agency has just begun...didn't get the flavor of the month? So what! Move on and keep looking forward. I find joy in the fact that Lamarcus rejected the Lakers yesterday..that's where I hang my hat...more to come

Maybe he's not on the hot seat but people need to stop calling the man a "genius."

Neil on the hot seat? lmao

He's going to end up leaving us because no one will sign with Portland.

Didn't everybody say the same thing of Pritchard? we just acted like dude could pull rabbits out of a hat when really the shit was just hype

Neo has done a good job since he got here. Not perfect but good.

Stotts won't be here more than another year or two IMO.

Glad we have a couple of nice building pieces (Lillard, Volneh, CJ, Leonard). Wish we had more picks lined up.
