People always talk about how we should’ve drafted Durant, but what about the trade the Spurs offered us? What was the best move there? Drafting Durant or trading for Duncan?
From what I recall that was a rumor that was denied by the Spurs.
It's not too often with players involved that teams confirm rumors.From what I recall that was a rumor that was denied by the Spurs.
Exactly. They have to deny it out of respect for Duncan.It's not too often with players involved that teams confirm rumors.
Would you think pop would say yeah, we offered timmy for oden, but they said no.

They would've taken Oden. Every one would have taken Oden and if they say otherwise they are lying and using hindsight.I have it on good authority that the Spurs inquired about the pick. They did win one title after that but by then, Duncan was a shell of his former self and Leonard was far and away the MVP. Can you imagine Durant (if that is who they chose) and Leonard over that last 7+ years? Damn!

Of course there are fans that would have taken Durant. I'm talking strictly about the real 32 GMs at the time, not pretend ones.Almost everyone. I know one pretend GM that has picture proof of whom they would have taken...and it wasn't Oden.![]()

True story take it for what it’s worth. I was talking to Dave Twardzik, who was with Orlando in the front office at the time, and I will never forget him saying “Durant will be incredible, HOF, and is better than Oden but nobody I know would take Durant you just can’t pass on a once in a lifetime center like Oden”. It was the day of the draft lottery.

I can't imagine local Draft guru D69 was the only one who did as much research as he did and came away with Durant being "the obvious" choice. He had a list of reasons as to why and I can't believe he was the only one with that information or thought process.
Once again, lots of people would've taken Durant. Just not a GM of a real team.I can't imagine local Draft guru D69 was the only one who did as much research as he did and came away with Durant being "the obvious" choice. I'd love to get a beer with ya but I'm just having fun too!Once again, just having fun. Do I need to buy you a beer?![]()
But we bounced back quick with Dame. I think Orlando would’ve taken Oden and traded Howard.Orlando would't have taken Oden because they had Howard. And Phoenix might have taken Durant over Oden because he would have fit D'antoni's system like a glove and they had Amare inside.
but other than those two teams, I'd bet 28 others would have went for Oden, even Boston contrary to the spin out of there
as it turned out, Portland winning the lottery was a curse. They could have finished 2nd and got Durant. They could have finished 3rd and got Horford. Either would have made those Roy/Aldridge teams exciting. Losing the value of that #1 pick coupled with only getting 4 good years out of the 6th pick and Roy set the franchise back big time, especially when you factor in the Blazers had a 3rd pick in 2005 and turned it into Martell Webster
2005 - #3 --> Webster
2006 - #4 --> Aldridge
2006 - #7 --> Roy
2007 - #1 --> Oden
2008 - #11 --> Bayless
5 years after drafting Roy, Aldridge was the only one of those still on the team. That has to be a historically bad result
Did you ever see any articles that said Spurs were willing to trade Duncan? If so, then they should be on the web. Find one that validates your rumor.
Yeah, it's pretty common to trade a pick for 2 picks 12 and 14 years into the future.I like to answer silly questions with good answers. We should have traded the pick for Cleveland's 2019 first round pick and their 2021 first.

Never offered
Since we are dealing in hypotheticals though, should we have drafted Magic Johnson, or traded for Kareem?
Not possible. The Blazers didn't draft Bird because he refused to sign with us and still had a year of eligibility to go back to college.how about the 1978 draft:
1 POR Mychal Thompson
6 BOS Larry Bird
7 POR Ron Brewer
9 CHI Reggie Theus
24 POR Keith Herron
36 PHI Maurice Cheeks
Bird, Theus, and Cheeks would have been a decent perimeter trio
