Should we keep Grant to build with Sharpe and Scoot?

I have a feeling that this is going to be a persistent topic of conversation until the trade deadline.

Couple things to get out of the way
  • We aren't going to pull the offer.
  • Grant isn't going to do a sign-and-trade because he specifically held out until this summer to get that 5th year and he can't get a 5th year in a sign-and-trade.
So here's the question - should we keep Grant to have a veteran with Scoot/Sharpe?

I went back and looked. LMA was 27 when we drafted Dame. Grant is 29 so he's a couple years older. Is it worth it to keep Grant and have a fringe All-Star caliber player to put with Scoot and Sharpe?

I'm super curious to see how he plays with Scoot and Sharpe. Here are Grant's numbers from last year.

20 ppg
4.5 rebounds
2.4 assists
47.5% from the field
40% from three.
16 PER
117 ORtg
120 DRtg
60 TS%
 
Voted yes. Grant isn't a #1 option by any means, but you don't wanna trot out a Houston Rockets style G-League team out there and expect an all youth team to figure out how to be pros on their own. Trade him in the offseason if there isn't an amazing offer t the deadline.
 
I don't think we will be able to trade him at the deadline with his new contract. Probably move him next summer at the earliest. Might be good to see him run with the youngins.
 
Grant was the best player on the worst team in Detroit.

Now he's the best player on a full rebuild Portland.

Just a fun proffesional NBA player to hang out with.

oh... and he's good at basketball.
 
Since he's going to buy Dame's castle I'd say yes! just kidding....bottom line, if he wants to be here I'd keep him to mentor the young guys and lead the lockerroom...he's only 28 or 29 now
 
I don't see much of a long-term future due to his age, but I actually think we might see his best yet with more movement expected in our offense via Scoot.
 
I am confused with the whole Grant sitch at the moment, especially how it relates to Dame etc.

Does he really want to be here? I just can’t believe he does. We shall see I guess.

He got his $. He'd be more willing to play team ball. Players seeking to get paid tend to do selfish things
 
Absolutely keep - for now.
  • Two way wings are rare in the league.
  • He's being paid 20% of the cap per year, commensurate with his play.
  • On the last year of his deal, he'll only be paid 19% of the cap - and paid less than Tobias Harris is paid THIS YEAR.
  • We have to hit the salary floor anyways, so there is a need to have a few large contracts on the team.
  • As long as he doesn't drop off a cliff, he'll still be worth something in 2-3 years.
  • Most importantly: I believe it's important for young players to play with good players early in their career - develop winning habits.. When Scoot or Shaedon make that kick out pass you want to have players that can actually hit the shot. You want the support around them to make sense, and not have them just running around with a bunch of other 20 year olds who have no idea what they're doing.

All you have to ask is, if there is a mic and someone needs to step up to it, who do you think steps first? It's Scoot. It will be interesting, but an alpha is an alpha.

They definitely need to keep Grant
 
with a team in transition like Portland is, you have to hope the leader is the coach.Is Billups that kind of coach?

Yes - start his contract at $38m & make it descending.
Keep him for 1 to 1.5 years before trading him

I'm sure we've all had a great coach that made a difference, but it's just not the same as the leader on the floor or field. As for Billups, he seems to have it, and I believe Dame gone will change things for him. Another part of the story that will be fun to watch play out.

100% agree.
Id love for Portland to pull in a vet Guard to help Scoot/Shae as well.
Someone like Delon Wright (who exactly fits our GPII TPE).
 
I think now you attempt to sign and trade him and acquire other assets. Rebuilding assets. Don’t lock yourself into that contract.

This and even he deserves to win something before he retires

Agreed 100%. Grant is still a good player that takes pressure of the backcourt with his shooting and bailout shotmaking.

I think if we get Clowney and Jovic + 4 1sts and 2 unprotected swaps + expirings to go along with Scoot, Sharpe, and Grant, we’re doing alright.

Right now, the only incentive to trade Grant is for a different piece for the roster like Jarrett Allen.

Tough, because I’d really want 34mpg for Ant, 32mpg for Sharpe, 30mpg for Scoot. I want Ant playing that much to increase his value by the deadline, and I want Sharpe playing 30mpg at SG. I don’t think we should trot out Scoot/Ant/Shae as our starting 1-3.

I would still take him as an insurance policy though.

I would demand Caleb Martin with Jovic and Clowney. His tenacity would be a great fit at SF.

Im ready to move on from Ant.
He'll score a lot of points & give them all back on the other end. Im admittedly much lower on the Jamal Crawford type players
