SI: IZOD’s Empty Seats a “Drain” on Players?

In an article on their least favorite sports venues, two Sports Illustrated writers rank the IZOD Center one of the worst places to watch a sporting event. The aging arena by the Turnpike was described thusly: “A depressing place to watch a game. The empty seats act like kryptonite upon the players, draining the energy and enthusiasm from them”. But IZOD isn’t the worst in the area: Nassau Colisseum is.

my opinion:

its not the fans…the fans supported nd will support this team for a long time…but the problem with people not showing up is the prices for tickets…yea they got the 10 nd 15$ tickets but u dont expect all the ppl to buy tickets there….nd if u look at the tv ratings during games we r one of the top NBA teams if not #1..so its not the fans..its the price of the tickets..if u look around the league ticket prices its so cheap wen i saw it i was like wow with that kind of cheapness i can buy season tickets nd im only 17 so if u wanna blame all the fans for this ur way wrong..RATner is just trying to higher the prices for his dumba** project that will never happen..its a SHAME!!! but still GO NETS!!!

IMO the reason people not showing up is location.

i agree its not the fans..... but its not ticket prices either... its the fact that the arena is not easy to get to. no public transportation, you cant walk there, and even by car its off the turnpike which makes it a big headache as well

ok all good points but come on just for a decent seat u gotta pay 90-110$ dollars (new price plans) nd thats just 1 game..i think thats pricey nd also thats not including the food...i once bought the nets #1 finger it was 9$

Nassau Colliseum is absolutely terrible. I've been to minor league hockey arenas in Ontario that are better than that arena.

Don't know how much you pin on ticket prices. Those are NBA ticket prices that a solid basketball market should be able to purchase. If its not happening, either the team's being marketed to a fanbase that's below its price range or some other factors to blame (not enough enthusiasm, location, etc.).

You know, during the Nets "glory years" (01-04), I always thought they played better when the arena was most empty. The ugliest loss I saw in those years was an absolute dud against the Kings, where the arena was absolutely packed. (Then again, the better the opponent was, the bigger the crowd was, so this isn't exactly scientific in any manner)

When I watch NBA on NBALP, I notice that there are a lot of places that have to be depressing for players to play at. Two seasons ago, I saw a game at Atlanta where they had the fancy team introductions and the stadium was nearly empty. Playing in front of small audiences all the time has to hurt guys' egos.

Atlanta isn't the only one.

Aren't tickets on the very cheap side in NJ?

There is absolutely no logic to the Nets remaining in the IZOD center. I mean...15 minutes down the damn highway is a 400 million dollar state of the art arena that is LOOKING for another sports team. The new Xanadu complex will only help the team so much as the fact remains the BUILDING ITSELF IS THE PROBLEM.

The worst thing about playing in the Meadowlands is not having to drive, it's not having to pony up a lot of money for tickets and food, and it's not location.

The worst thing about the Meadowlands is Xanadu, a miserable eye-sore waste of money trying to turn the site into something profitable. And the worst thing about Xanadu is not the fact that it looks like absolute crap, it's the fact that it takes up too much space, and it has been delayed for years. As a result, if you don't have a parking pass, if you go to a Nets game you will have to park across the highway in the Giants stadium parking lot and walk more often than not in the cold across the tunnel or take a bus to the arena. If you go to a football game at the Stadium and you don't have a pass to park in the lot either at the stadium or the arena, you'll have to park in a office building parking lot in Lyndhurst and take a school bus to the stadium.

Taking all the other negative factors in, what incentive is there to go to the Meadowlands and see a game for the average fan?

So how come no one went to games before Xanadu broke ground? Let's not forget that our fan base is crappy.

I truly don't understand why they extended the lease on the Izod center. They should have played their games at the Prudential center from last year to the year they move to Brooklyn.

If it were up to me I would rather have them not move to Brooklyn at all, they should just go to the Prudential center.
