Quit on her team. No gold medals. Sounds like they would have given it to her whether or not she won or not.
Basically a participation trophy for the soft generation.
You should take the time to read why they named her the athlete of the year.
Did she excel at athletics, though?
Did she have an impact on athletics, though?

This era's greatest female athlete while being molested, then forced to be the face and voice of over 300 children and young women who were sexually abused while guiding a young team to the Olympics. Hell yes, she excelled!
This era's greatest female athlete
She left them high and dry in the midst of competition.
It's my understanding that she felt she didn't have it and that her stepping aside allowed the team to still medal.
If you have mental illness, you can’t will yourself out of it. Btw, Michael Jordan quit on his team in 1993 when the team was in its prime. Is he one of the best athletes?Yes.
She was proclaimed as the GOAT, but then quit due to the expectations put on her by the media and fans and a host of other problems in her life (Sex abuse scandal, her brother was a gangster, etc).
The best athletes have the mental will to overcome those and not give up, though.
But I guess its fitting for our country.

Jordan quit when they had team that could win 4 or more in a row. He couldn’t take the pressure. He didn't quit in the middle of the finals. He retired in the offseason.
Its fine that she quit if she couldn't handle the pressure, she shouldn't be rewarded for doing so and being recognized more than people who willed their way and actually met or exceeded their expectations.

Cuz he couldn’t handle the pressure of another season. He retired in the offseason.

I think I missed something....Dan Dickau should have been athlete of the year.... for his part in getting rid of Neil Olshey.

What did Dan Dickau do to help get rid of NO?
This was good to hear.
I don't doubt a word of it. Dickau isn't a shit-stirrer or given to hyperbole. This was good to hear.
It is unfortunate that NO was allowed to persist in the organization for 10 years.
Her aunt died unexpectedly 2 days before the competition started, which certainly didn't help her cause. The Jordan talk missed that point. His first retirement came on the heels of his dad being killed. Sometimes us humans need a moment. It's my understanding that she felt she didn't have it and that her stepping aside allowed the team to still medal.
@AmirIcon would beg to differI don't doubt a word of it. Dickau isn't a shit-stirrer or given to hyperbole.

Many have opinions like this, have done zero research, and why the internet is bad.
First, everyone should know by now that a magazine is not going to name anyone top anything without it being controversial. The goal is to sell, not justice.
Second, she did not quit anything. Twisties for a gymnast is a real thing. Anything else that was going on in her life was secondary and not the reason she did not compete. I have not heard one former gymnast criticize her. Since they know a whole lot more than the keyboard heroes spewing nonsense, will take their word for it.
When this originally happened, I had heard Dominique Moceanu talk about it. Then, I read her book and got better understanding of what these girls go thru. Guessing other parents did the same. Saw firsthand how messed up that whole situation is but did not fully realize how bad it was. I have zero regrets about my children not taking an interest in gymnastics and applaud all efforts to clean up USA gymnastics. Because of Biles using her platform as she did, it is going to make life better for thousands of kids.
