This reminds me of the time I was working as a hod carrier for my brick layer father in Atlanta back in the mid 60s. He hired this crew from Rome, Georgia to help us brick up these very large apartment buildings. One of the guys told us this story of how he was a volunteer fire fighter in Rome when this Black American family moves into the town. They were the first Black Americans to move into Rome in anyone's memory. Now, that's saying something because the last time any Blacks lived in Rome and survived a hanging were probably slaves. They took their own sweet time 'rushing' to the fire until it was too late and the whole house burned down. My memory isn't real sharp about that story telling but I seem to recall that he had a smile on his face as he told the story. I also think it was very likely there were some chuckles out of his brothers and buddies who were the rest of the crew we hired.

There are 'firemen' and there are real firemen. The real ones are the ones concerned about saving lives and structures.

One time I must have accidentally taken a double dose of insulin. I passed out and was on the verge of death when my wife called 911. In less than five minutes the Lake Oswego fire department was at our house. They measured my blood sugar which was around 35, normal is 100, and gave me an IV which had glucose blood sugar in it. I woke up to see four burly firemen in my living room. I immediately knew what happened. God Bless real firemen.
