Fourteen thousand years ago, hunter gatherer grown-ups in Spain’s Las Monedas Cave were busy making serious cave art. Dozens of charcoal drawings depict reindeer, bison, and other ice age mammals in realistic detail.

Kids, meanwhile, were apparently shooed off to their own corner of the cave. There, on a flat stretch of wall at toddler’s eye level, children seem to have etched a series of doodles that wouldn’t be out of place in a modern kindergarten class. The youngsters were between 3 and 6 years old and working alone, a team of archaeologists and child development experts conclude in Hunter Gatherer Research.

I went out at 2 p.m. to put some food out for stray cats when I heard a rustling in my recycling.

I looked in and pulled back a bag and saw a white face staring back at me, looking irritated.

It was an opossum.

Those things are creepy. They look like giant rats. I once had one show up at my doorstep and when I walked up the path and saw it, it so freaked me out that I stayed somewhere else that night! ha!

Oh, they aren't so bad. They hang out with my cats all the time.

When my mother was still alive, she put leftovers out for our cats when the weather was nice and they liked to stay out. Mum came to me one afternoon and said there was another cat eating with out cats.

It was a possum.

Another time, I heard a banging on the patio. I looked out and saw a possum had gotten its head stuck in a mayonnaise jar Mum had left out. I had to take the jar in one hand and the possum's tail in the left and pull ... once ... twice ... then three and it was free.

I put the possum on the ground and ran back into the house. I looked back out and the possum was sitting where I left it, confused, its face white covered with mayo.
