Martel Webster is due roughly $14.3 mil over the next 3 years of guaranteed money before he enters his first option year. Luke Babbitt will get roughly $4.2 mil over the same period while Ryan Gomes can almost completely be wiped off the books before free agency. Not only did the Portland Trail Blazers add a dangerous three point shooter to an offense that values long distance shooting, but they did so with massive value, getting both the likely BPA at 16 and slashing money from the books. Even if they keep Gomes around, they still have a partial guarantee next year and his deal is always less than Webster’s.

The kicker in the Webster deal is the Ryan Gomes contract. Gomes’ deal is not guaranteed. It is a tremendously valuable asset in the run up for free agency. Teams like New Orleans, New York, Chicago, and Miami can trade a player for Gomes and then cut him to save money under the cap. In order for the Wolves to make the deal with Portland, they needed to send back roughly $4 mil in salary + the 16th pick.

What do you mean "unfair"? If you mean one of them favors us and the other favors the other team, then yes, I suppose in theory. But why hasn't anyone used this loophole before? And it's still not as good as bundling, because using bundling you can get one very-well-paid player for two medium-paid players, whereas here each pair of players has to have roughly equivalent salary.

I can't imagine teams haven't used it... making distinct trades at the same time seems to be common sense when you're dealing with trade exceptions and recently acquired players.

Why would anyone re-sign with the wolves? Once a wolfe is freed, it runs. That and the fact they did not play him towards the end.

It's funny that in his farewell letter that Pritchard lists Gomes as an asset that Paul Allen had helped acquire. Seems maybe Pritchard had planned on keeping him.

With teams looking to save money, it's not player impact as much as player value. Bitch all you want about Rudy or Bayless, but their contributions compared to their salaries make them attractive in a trade. Martell's wasn't, which is why I was surprised we were able to make that trade. Throw in the expiring contracts of Joel (which will be primarily paid by insurance) and the option of having an expiring contract in Andre, and that's not completely unattractive. If you want an impact player in return, Nico or LMA will likely have to be included.

for Gomes and Rudy??? That doesn't make sense for the W's or the $$$ being exchanged. I guess they might value some cap relief, but thats their only real 5 and arguably their best player for a guy who hasn't shown himself to be better then either of Ellis's current backups (Azubuike or Morrow). Also (not that GM's don't lie) I just heard the Warriors GM interviewed claiming he's not shopping either guy

He wouldn't say who, but now they're guessing he had Webster targeted. He now barks that Webster improves greatly when he plays over 30 minutes, and he plans to start Martell at the 2. everyone has an opinion but not much supports yours. Maggette being dealt represents a chance that this fire sale might be happening, but deal day just passed without anything significant following it. Dude is 6'5, 31 years old, due a lot of bank and not exactly a difference maker/great fit on that club going forward... I'd rate him well behind both Ellis and Biedrins. I'm guessing they use that saved $$$ to attain a real SF.
